THE BATCHWORTH BOAT RALLY, RICKMANSWORTH May 17
THE BATCHWORTH BOAT RALLY, RICKMANSWORTH

This rally was started in 2024 when at very short notice the huge Rickmansworth Festival was cancelled. The Waterspace team decided to keep the boat gathering but as a much smaller event. With some enthusiastic parters it was a huge success in 2024.

So Next year as an appropriate "Theme" for the times we are Calling all GUCCCo, FMC, Severn & Canal boats.particularly those built in 1935 as next year the Batchworth Boat Rally would like to see them all gathering at Batchworth in Rickmansworth to celebrate their 90 years.
The rally will take place on 17/18th May, two weeks after the cavalcade at Little Venice.
Please put the date in your calendar for next year and drop us an email then we will make sure to include you on the mailing list when bookings open in January.

Would that be the flat bridge that you have to take radio aerials down for, rather than an arched bridge.

Ours is on the right and we have a short chimney which works fine. Only time I can actually remember taking it off to clear bridges, etc is on the Stratford.

Some people have a short chimney for cruising, where the slipstream from the dizzying 3/4mph of the boat helps the fire draw and a tall one for when moored up.

CHACELY aka NORA EASTING for sale
CHACELY aka NORA EASTING for sale

IanM replied to MPR's topic in General Boating

Just had a Google and it seems that Nora Easting was its original name when owned by Flixborough Shipping Company. The name was changed to Chaceley when it was converted to a grain barge based out of Tewkesbury. Chaceley being a village on the Severn. https://shippingandshipbuilding.uk/view.php?a1Order=Sorter_types&a1Dir=ASC&a1Page=149&ref=206079&vessel=NORA+EASTING

Pic from the advert: And the six cylinder Gardner (presumably) pushing it along in the earlier photo: So who was Nora Easting? She must have been important for the original name CHACELEY to have been replaced.

Stop planks in marina entrance

Depends on the plastic and in particular, what filler is used. Some can be less dense than wood. An advantage of plastic is that it can be formed, or welded into shapes that give it the most strength where needed. Suitable buttresses on the outside can resist the weight of water it is holding. You need to look at stiffness, yield stresses as well, when compared to wood. A plastic stop plank won't look the same as a wooden one, but could be equally, or more effective. Welded steel stop planks might even work. Shaped and buttressed to minimise weight, while giving enough strength and stiffness. Could even have rubber seals at the joints and against the slots. You need to look at lifting gear, especially if the Marina has an entrance sized for fat boats. The Bridgewater canal has fixed cranes on site at many of their stop plank locations, ready to deploy the in situ wood planks quickly, but, as @Cheshire cat says, it all depends if the system actually works on the day. On CaRT waters, you can spot eyelets under bridge arches occasionally, once used to lower stop planks off a block and tackle. Modern lifting regs mean they are almost certainly no longer used and CaRT bring in a properly tested and certified crane. The marina will have an ongoing cost on their lifting gear, maintaining it and keeping the paperwork up to date.

Mine was on the right, and it proved not to be the problem some people say it would be. The actual chimney should just lift off, but yours may be stick on with soot and tar from previous fires. Try offering it some GBH around the top to rock it at the base. The hinged ones tend to be engine exhaust stacks that are usually a lot higher.

Cost.... have you seen the price of recycled plastic planking. Probably double the cost of wood at least... Not sure about the weight, for stop planks if they sink rather than float that would be good thing wouldn't it? I recently built some decking using good quality composite decking boards. What is obvious with those and recycled timber is it bends far more than wood so needs more support. I think plastic stop planks would simply bend and come out of the slots.
