THE BATCHWORTH BOAT RALLY, RICKMANSWORTH

This rally was started in 2024 when at very short notice the huge Rickmansworth Festival was cancelled. The Waterspace team decided to keep the boat gathering but as a much smaller event. With some enthusiastic parters it was a huge success in 2024.

So Next year as an appropriate "Theme" for the times we are Calling all GUCCCo, FMC, Severn & Canal boats.particularly those built in 1935 as next year the Batchworth Boat Rally would like to see them all gathering at Batchworth in Rickmansworth to celebrate their 90 years.
The rally will take place on 17/18th May, two weeks after the cavalcade at Little Venice.
Please put the date in your calendar for next year and drop us an email then we will make sure to include you on the mailing list when bookings open in January.

There was a system of training boards financed by a compulsory levy on all employers above a certain size and then at least some of the levy was disbursed to those providing training. This meant that those companies that poached staff paid at least something towards their training. The training boards did seem to be bloated and needed thinning down, but rather than that they were basically caused to wither. That would bean alterative to full government funding, but I can just hear the howls from the poachers when they have to pay their fair share of training costs.

That is very much the tragedy and one of the principal causes of the lack of skilled labour to build houses. Back in my teens I had a job as a painter and decorator and many of those around me had learned their skills, bricklaying, plastering, roofing, etc.etc. whilst working for the Council. Once Thatcher stopped Councils building council houses, those that were working for the council obviously went self-employed but no-one was then training people in these skills. So what we now have is that they have all either retired or approaching retirement with no-one to replace them as the developers aren't keen on training since their mindset is along the lines of 'why should we train someone up just for another company to then poach them?', so they all try to poach their builders from one another, except we are running out of them (https://www.placesforpeople.co.uk/pfp-thrive/insights-tools/the-uk-construction-skills-shortage/). This is why Burnham's plan to build 1.5 million council houses during this Parliament is simply 'pie in the sky', relying on 'the market' to deliver training simply hasn't happened and we simply don't have enough skilled workers to deliver on this. Of course we could rely on immigration but that opens a whole new can of worms. Of course the Government could subsidise these developers even more than they do now by having Government Training Boards to fill this skills shortage, but why should they if the developers themselves wont?

Here from JohnGreen on 18Sep2009 shows 'PUB' not yet painted on the bridge, and here from © RogerDKidd on 16Sep2019 shows both the PUB and the NO fwiw my 2009 Nicholson's shows a pub there ..."The Lakeside Tavern Real ale (they have over 200!)" - big cellar, then :-)

The tap might have been left on and you turned it off. Usually a lever or T handle tap is on when the lever is in line with the body and off when it is at a right angle to it. The piston and seal/washer has been known to fall apart in those pump so answer @Llamedos question

Does it feel smooth as you pump with no or little resistance or is it like your pulling against a vacuum eg like working a bike pump with your finger over the hole?
