Quick question about the reaction emojis

Apologies as I wasn't sure where to ask this. I'm not totally sure about the use of the emoji reactions. I often give a horrified face reaction if someone has posted something really alarming, scary or troubling - for example they had a narrow escape. It's a bit of a "OMG that's awful for you!" reaction. However, I'm not sure if the forum software interprets it as more of a "I'm really shocked and disturbed at your behaviour posting something like that!" reaction. Similarly, the angry face could mean "I'm really angry on your behalf that you had to deal with that!" or "I'm angry with you at posting that!". It only matters because the interpretation could be viewed as critical or sympathetic depending on the interpretation of the emoji. Are you able to enlighten me? Many thank, Marianne.

I know what you mean, it's easy for emojis to be misinterpreted. It would be good to have a wider array available (before anyone says anything I'm referring to reaction emojis, I'm fully aware of the emojis I can use for posting 😊).

The laughing emoji is the classic example. It's used so often as a derogatory response that I'm careful with it's intended use. If someone makes me laugh out loud and spray my coffee over my phone it's a must 🙂.

 

If we had 🤡 available I'm sure the laughing emoji wouldn't be used so much in a derogatory way 😊

One question I have is, the up-arrow and possibly the heart reaction (?) seem to be used for calculating the popularity of a post, and for "wins the day".  Do other emoji's affect these?

 

Many chat systems can react with any emoji, with certain ones being "in front" in availability, and the rest through a secondary menu.  I would be in favor of.  Makes things more interesting.

Greenie
You spent twenty minutes carefully crafting a devastatingly clever, perfectly formatted response to an argument, only to look down and see that another member beat you to it with a superior joke. You have to delete your entire draft, click the button to give them a Greenie, and sit there green with envy because they typed quicker and stole your glory.

 

Happy
You successfully baited the forum’s most pedantic, self-righteous bore into writing a three-page rant, and now you can sit back with a cup of tea and watch everyone else pick them apart

 

Laugh
You accidentally hit post on a comment with a massive typo or an entirely wrong technical fact, so you immediately react with this to pretend it was all an ironic joke and you're totally laughing with them, not at your own public humiliation when someone points it out before you can edit.

 

Sad 
You accidentally clicked on a thread from 2008 and realized every single witty, legendary regular who made the forum great has vanished into the ether, leaving behind only dead image links and ghosts of the past and want to share the pain 

 

Horror 
You are reading a completely unhinged, wildly aggressive rant from a fellow member, and halfway through their paragraph describing the absolute lunatic terrorizing their marina, you slowly realize they are talking about you

 

Unimpressed 
You are reading a reply from that one member who feels the absolute need to quote an entire three-page wall of text just to add a single sentence saying ^^^^This

Someone asked a simple, harmless question about swapping out a AA alkaline for a lithium coin cell in their TV remote, and the forum's self-appointed safety expert has swooped in with a fifty page thesis quoting obscure marine fire safety regulations, cargo insurance clauses, and ISO standards, entirely derailing the thread so they can lecture everyone about thermal runaway

Someone posted a idyllic photo of their golden retriever sleeping soundly in front of a roaring wood-burner on their narrowboat, and despite the fact that you secretly despise animals and think shedding fur is a biohazard, you want to show the forum your warm cuddly side.

Sorry, I disagree - as the written word can sometimes be interpreted differently by different people, and the writer realises that, then a 'smiley' can get over that hurdle with people thinking its not a 'pop' or a slur about someone.
