THE BATCHWORTH BOAT RALLY, RICKMANSWORTH May 17
THE BATCHWORTH BOAT RALLY, RICKMANSWORTH

This rally was started in 2024 when at very short notice the huge Rickmansworth Festival was cancelled. The Waterspace team decided to keep the boat gathering but as a much smaller event. With some enthusiastic parters it was a huge success in 2024.

So Next year as an appropriate "Theme" for the times we are Calling all GUCCCo, FMC, Severn & Canal boats.particularly those built in 1935 as next year the Batchworth Boat Rally would like to see them all gathering at Batchworth in Rickmansworth to celebrate their 90 years.
The rally will take place on 17/18th May, two weeks after the cavalcade at Little Venice.
Please put the date in your calendar for next year and drop us an email then we will make sure to include you on the mailing list when bookings open in January.

Stop planks in marina entrance
Stop planks in marina entrance

BEngo replied to Grassman's topic in General Boating

Testing stop planks is bloody difficult. They can really only be easily sealed when there is good flow through them to draw ashes in to the gaps. That means a fair difference of level either side of the planks. Easy to achieve if you are at the head of a lock, rather harder if you are trying to stank a marina off from even a half-mile pound. In the standard CRT/BW double stop log you can do it with pumps, but they need to be surprisingly large. A single 4 in pump doesn't cut it. You then run into the problem of getting the kit to the plank grooves. Four and six in pumps are heavy! It can be done. Allow at least four hours to get a good seal. Been there, still have the T-shirt earned at Circus Field. Twice.

Water pump switch
Water pump switch

Ex Brummie replied to Sid Charles's topic in Boat Building & Maintenance

I have a switch on the main board, and I also fitted another between the main feed and the pump connection. I never really gave it much thought as it seemed the right thing to do. In every electrical installation I have seen it appears to be common practice to isolate the main feed near the appliance. Apart from which, if you need to work on the pump or ancillary water supply equipment, you'd soon get fed up walking back and forth the length of the boat.

Electric Boating
Electric Boating

IanD replied to Jen-in-Wellies's topic in Waterways News & Press

Given that the most frequent reason for calling out the hire base over the years has been flat/sulphated batteries -- at least, in my experience -- you'd think that an electric/series-hybrid boat would have fewer problems, not more. On the sole occasion I've had to call Finesse out (a week into our first long trip) the remote monitoring proved invaluable, it let Ricky see what was happening and try making some changes to the setup, and work out from this what the likely problem was*** before coming out to a boat a couple of hours drive away. *** it turned out to be water in the fuel, which was making the generator toss a wobbler...

Thanks for your feedback boys and girls. In answer to the points raised. The pound is about 8 miles long. There is no adjacent housing below or near to the embankment, just open fields. 100 boats with liveaboards would be severe, especially for the quite a few people with disabilities. The depths vary but under our boat it's about 5 ft and my partner is disabled. I appreciate that stop planks warp, rot, weather etc especially if left uncovered, I still would like the marina to have them on site, properly protected from the elements, tested periodically say every 6-12 months, and replaced or altered if necessary. It would also give the staff and nearby liveaboards some practice deploying them, a bit like a fire drill. Yes maybe I'm paranoid but for the extortionate mooring fees they're charging it's the least they could/should do 🙂

Personal attacks on forum and moderation
Personal attacks on forum and moderation

IanD replied to IanD's topic in Suggestions & Feedback

From @Jen-in-Wellies in January 2005... "Another reminder about following the forum rules. Politics and Current Affairs takes as much of the moderator's time as the rest of CWDF put together. Remember that the existence of this section of the forum is a privilege, not a right. It only exists as a way of keeping political arguments out of the rest of the forum. There are other options for on-line political discussion where trolling, personal insults and attacks are acceptable. CWDF is not that place. If you are now most interested in that, rather than UK inland boating, then they would be a better place for you. Again, disagreement is fine. Argument over politics, politicians and their policies is fine. Personal attacks on other forum members is not. Think before mashing the "Submit Reply" button. Treat other forum members with the respect you'd expect to be treated yourself. So a reply like "The banning golf policy of the Raving Monster Loony Party is a terrible idea because ..." is fine. A reply like "Jen-in-Wellies supports the banning golf policy of the Raving Monster Loony Party because she smells like drain cleaner" is not fine. Even if it is true. It's a personal problem. I don't like to talk about it." Even more so for posts outside the Political section...

Keep trying -- nobody is convinced, and it now looks like an actual vote isn't too far away, which should keep you happy... 😉 https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/oct/03/half-want-to-rejoin-eu-and-backing-it-could-drive-up-labour-vote-megapoll-finds
