Why the world is going Woke (and it WILL get even more woke as time marches on)

There was a disturbing article in The Times the other day about the latest thing to upset student campuses. It was actually quite depressing because my lad has to grow up in the increasingly Woke and over sensitive world. He'll probably be here for another 80 or 90  years having to put up with this BS. However my wife commented that students (but also many people in general) have always protested about stuff, they famously did so in the 60s and 70s for example. The difference was that back then they had stuff that was actually worth getting upset about whereas now those same people (with the urge to "make the world a better place" and, just as importantly, look virtuous whilst doing it....) are going looking for stuff to get worked up about.
To me this explains why the world is going woke mad and getting upset about 'eff all (like people wanting to call women women and men men * ), but, unfortunately, I cannot see any way this trend is going to change and it is very concerning just how far it's all going to go

* apparently that's more or less a crime now, but certainly, according to these Woke extremists, a nasty evil thing to do which must be stamped out at all costs.

There's nothing much funnier than some old so and so having a rant, but being so caught up in himself that he forgets to say what it is that has melted his snowflake mind.

Curious use of 'at all costs'  what exactly do you mean, a bit of light legislation maybe, curating books or maybe even banning them, identifying those you consider 'woke' and restricting access to media, or maybe re education schools, possibly isolating those who's views you dislike in maybe some sort of concentrated location so they don't contaminate others.

What is it you disagree with in what I have said ? :

Basically I said there is a certain type of person who wants to "make the world a better place" (and, just as importantly, look virtuous whilst doing it....).

But they have less and less to go at these days because it's all been done before, so their "bar" for what constitutes unacceptable society is constantly dropping. Thus explaining why they get so upset about so little.

You think this is something and nothing ?

This is what these people actually are trying to do (they literally want to tell others how to think) :

legislation

curating (i.e. censoring) books or maybe even banning them

restricting access to media (or at last trying to, more by trying to censor what's in the media, the MSM anyway)

re education schools

isolating those who's views they dislike (or by no platforming them)

At all cost, that's the key comment, if i agree with you or disagree is beside the point, the road to hell and all that

Don’t worry about it, the one thing these woketards always do, is destroy themselves, as they proffer evermore ridiculous ideas. Most of the time you can simply mock them for their rank stupidity, in the full knowledge, that eventually the majority will finally have enough of their nonsense, to do what the US has just done, and vote in someone who will genuinely upend their world. In the mean time just treat the whole thing as a comedy show.

I hope you're right Phil, but I am rather of the view you are not. As my wife said students in particular have always protested to "want to make the world a better place" and so they will continue to want do that even as there is less and less to need protesting about, thus pushing down the level of what is acceptable in a free society. And students are lectured by people who tend to be leftie "progressive types", and those students tend to end up holding positions of influence*. Thus explaining why most of the mainstream media are so Woke and "progressive".

The very fact that the word "progressive" now had negative connotations for many people is as a result of this, it's all gone too far.....

* Jordan Peterson (the Canadian psychologist) points this out as to why so much of the media, and indeed society, is "progressive" when most every day people are not.

The Times' review of one of his books suggests that you are not alone...

He says some very insightful things.

One of the best is he is in favour of equality of opportunity* not equality of outcomes, whereas many "progressives" are really in favour of the latter over the former, even if they won't say it, or even admit it to themselves.....

* i.e. no discrimination, "positive" or not....

I don't think it is. Quite apart from anything when was the last time they abolished a law, or even just a regulation ?

Almost never.

The first thing I want to do with any banned book is to read it.

Spycatcher, anyone?

It was always the best publicity that an Irish author could get to be banned. The catholic church had a big say in what books were allowed to be published in the republic. A ban was a guaranteed boost to sales for the likes of Brendan Behan and Edna o'Brien in the rest of the English speaking world. Plus lots smuggled in to Ireland of course.

Perhaps Mr Smith should take note of a definition of a description he put in another thread and consider what and how he posts:

"to antagonise (others) online by deliberately posting inflammatory, irrelevant, or offensive comments or other disruptive content"

As far as I can see this thread fits that description very well!

I think it is more what you haven't said that the other poster was referring to. You quite clearly stated,"....There was a disturbing article in The Times the other day about the latest thing to upset student campuses......." which was what precisely?

You made a lot of fuss on another thread regarding an investigation into the 'journalist' Alison Pearson however when you look at what she was responsible for she was seriously damaging her journalistic credentials. She complained that  Metropolitan Police Officers didn't want to pose with a bunch of genocide supporters, the 'friendly' British Friends of Israel but, to use her words (on the now deleted post) were happy to pose with a bunch of Jew-haters. It turns out that the Officers seen with the group she allege were Jew Haters were in fact the Greater Manchester force,so not the Met, the photo was taken some time ago and the Officers concerned were alongside some Pakistani supporters of the imprisoned Pakistani leader Imram Khan, so nothing whatsoever to do with any 'jew haters' at all. Has she apologised or acknowledged her error? No, she merely deleted the post when it was exposed as total bullox. The force concerned are not taking the matter any further, but it certainly sounds to me like she was wilfully stirring the sh*t regardless of any factual accuracy, which for a journalist is a cardinal sin hence my earlier placing her Journalist occupation in inverted commas. If freedom of speech now means that you can accuse anyone of anything without consequence, perhaps we should abolish the laws on Libel.

Old man rants on internet forum.

Meanwhile in the USA they really are banning books, stripping them off the shelves of schools and universities. It’s being done by the new far right Christian’s. The ones who want schools to teach kids about man living alongside dinosaurs, 🦖.

That really is disturbing, but Murdoch doesn’t think so. He’d rather goons were worried about woke history drawing attention to just how much money our elite made out of slavery for instance.
Or how worrying it is that hugely wealthy landowners might just have to pay a bit of one of the taxes we all pay. Or that the richest kids parents should pay vat on their preferential private schooling.

I bet Jaguar shareholders are having kittens today. Shall we see how long their managing director lasts, and how soon their latest rebrand lasts, before it is quietly dropped. Get woke, go broke. 😂

Have to say that whatever that is about has completely passed my by, and to be honest I cannot even be bothered to do any research on the topic. As a non-Jaguar car owner (non-car owner of any brand) it is of exactly zero interest to me whatever they may, or may not have done. Perhaps it's important to you petrolheads but not to me. It's not as though it has any real importance as a UK manufacturer since it is owned by Tata anyway, who as they have demonstrated at Port Talbot, could simply shut it at a moments notice anyway. So what am I supposed to be bothered about?🥱

Not only do I not want a Jaguar, I wouldn't want anyone to think I was a Jaguar driver.

As you say, (some) young people have always wanted to protest to make the world a better place and that's generally a good thing. Things have changed for the better. Sexism, racism and homophobia still exist of course and probably always will, but in general they're now no longer acceptable in mainstream culture in this country.

That enlightenment and cultural change took a few decades to occur, but prior to that things changed much more slowly. So from a historical perspective what some of us who are old enough have  witnessed over the last few decades was exceptional rather than the norm.

What we're seeing now does seem more extreme with erstwhile vanguards of change like feminist Germaine Greer and gay rights activist Peter Tatchell now being seen as transphobic reactionary dinosaurs and de-platformed or cancelled from speaking at universities.

Will this more extreme form of woke thinking continue inexorably and become even more extreme? No I don't think so. It may continue for another decade, but eventually I think young people will get bored of it. They'll get older and hopefully wiser and the next generation might be a bit more realistic in their outlook. I think we've hit "peak woke" and the energy required to maintain ever increasing extreme forms of protest won't be sustainable.

Wassamatter with being woke anyway? I can read and write and spell and that`s probably enough to be condemned as woke. What depresses me is the utter boll***s that comes from the other end of the spectrum. I used to find the ideas of flat earthers, anti science idiots, chemtrail fools, and creationists amusing. Now I find the number of fools who see this nonsense as evidence of their own anti woke free thinking thoroughly depressing.  Us lot who can tell the difference between reactionary stupidity and common sense have to share the world with the kind of people who have given us Trump, Farage and the thicker end of the anti woke Tory party. Now where did I put the weekend Guardian?

That Jaguar ad. Quite spectacular. Truly hilarious.

I knew the MD of Jaguar, many years ago, not the current one. He said Jag faced an existential crisis, because it was a car for geriatric white men. He said it was becoming increasingly difficult to project a 'sports luxury' image while incorporating the mobility aid design features the actual users increasingly need. They've had a reprieve with the SUV model, which is much easier for fat old men to get in and out of, but I suspect now they face the prospect of decline to inevitable unviability.

The ad reeks of desperation, a last throw of the dice to seek a new audience and escape the liver spotted, string backed driving gloves, golf club bore associations so intrinsic to their brand. Next step - jaguar up for sale again.
