THE BATCHWORTH BOAT RALLY, RICKMANSWORTH May 17
THE BATCHWORTH BOAT RALLY, RICKMANSWORTH

This rally was started in 2024 when at very short notice the huge Rickmansworth Festival was cancelled. The Waterspace team decided to keep the boat gathering but as a much smaller event. With some enthusiastic parters it was a huge success in 2024.

So Next year as an appropriate "Theme" for the times we are Calling all GUCCCo, FMC, Severn & Canal boats.particularly those built in 1935 as next year the Batchworth Boat Rally would like to see them all gathering at Batchworth in Rickmansworth to celebrate their 90 years.
The rally will take place on 17/18th May, two weeks after the cavalcade at Little Venice.
Please put the date in your calendar for next year and drop us an email then we will make sure to include you on the mailing list when bookings open in January.

They need a few weeks to conservere the map, I won't get a digital copy for at least a month.

almost ! it is the 343 metre Hardham Tunnel, not on the River Arun but the Arun Canal or Coldwaltham cut, just South of Pulborough in West Sussex the Canal was just over 1 mile long it is not part of the Wey and Arun Junction Canal and also seperate to the Arun Navigation both of which are North of this little known canal. that Trust has no interest or ownership of this canal. the Southern Portal is easy to find from Hardham or Greatham Bridge, from Greatham Bridge head north along the towpath for 1/2 a mile its there on the right as the path starts to rise up to Hardham. if you head south from Greatham Bridge you will find Coldwaltham Lock although its overgrown now So your turn

Dripless seal - opportunity to replace, or don’t fix what ain’t broke?
Dripless seal - opportunity to replace, or don’t fix what ain’t broke?

pearley replied to JohnnieFlowers's topic in New to Boating?

Not familiar with that one but our previous boat had a Volvo dripless seal. When reversing at Brownhills to go to services we hit a concrete block underwater and damaged the prop. Having to replace it we decided to have the seal replaced too as it had a bit of a leak. It had worn a substantial groove around the drive shaft. Had done about 4500 hours by then.

Gloucester Docks
Gloucester Docks

Stroudwater1 replied to plato's topic in General Boating

I really don’t think they do though I’m afraid. There always has been silt in the docks and this was dealt with in the way Ian M and I described. I don’t know what happened when the EA declined the silt from the Severn back into the Severn at Purton. It clearly is the nub of the problem. It seems that BWB/ CRT acted with no foresight as they have sold all the silt clearing stuff, silt transport barges the lot and probably made the employees doing this redundant. They then stopped dredging the docks. Now contractors are in doing it, surprisingly that’s much more costly, and not as efficient as it was with the excellent dredger BWB owned. There may or may not be more silt coming in now, It claimed it is though it’s unclear on what basis other than climate change. The silt has built up over years. The waters always been horribly muddy at Gloucester. From the water companies perspective the same stuff is coming in and regardless of dredging can do so for many more years. I do believe they paid more when it was piped round in the 1990 breach. I doubt the water company affected by Llangollen pays more because of that. I doubt you or I would pay more to the council if a sinkhole appeared in the road outside our house for that matter. The argument is with the EA. I fear that bird has flown if nothing was done at the time. There’s more concern over pollution etc now so any challenges would be very unlikely to succeed Guess the only hope is to try and get a climate change grant, try to encourage transport or some commerce back onto the Severn, devise another way to deposit the silt perhaps further down the Severn off EAs hands or try and get more government funds. All are possible but not that likely. It’s a horrible situation that really the EA have landed CRT with.
