THE BATCHWORTH BOAT RALLY, RICKMANSWORTH May 17
THE BATCHWORTH BOAT RALLY, RICKMANSWORTH

This rally was started in 2024 when at very short notice the huge Rickmansworth Festival was cancelled. The Waterspace team decided to keep the boat gathering but as a much smaller event. With some enthusiastic parters it was a huge success in 2024.

So Next year as an appropriate "Theme" for the times we are Calling all GUCCCo, FMC, Severn & Canal boats.particularly those built in 1935 as next year the Batchworth Boat Rally would like to see them all gathering at Batchworth in Rickmansworth to celebrate their 90 years.
The rally will take place on 17/18th May, two weeks after the cavalcade at Little Venice.
Please put the date in your calendar for next year and drop us an email then we will make sure to include you on the mailing list when bookings open in January.

What's the problem with the plank rack I had 500w of solar next to mine. Yes the handrail is partially obstructed but in 5 years it wasn't a problem I just walked the other side. In fact having it on the handrail meant it was flat and not angled. Think outside the box. Looking at your roof, unless the mushroom vent is for a heater or similar I would remove it weld a panel over it and run panels down that side.

Stop planks in marina entrance
Stop planks in marina entrance

The marina I'm currently staying in doesn't have stop planks on site, they have a contractor 8 miles away who will come and deploy some in the event of an emergency. The section of canal outside has an 15ft embankment opposite the entrance. Despite the chances of an embankment breach being extremely unlikely, the risks are minimal but the consequences would be severe, especially for the 100 or so liveaboards in there. Is this the case at some of the other marinas? All others I've stayed in have their own stop planks. It seems a barmy arrangement to me.

How long does a boat need to be for a full time live aboard?
How long does a boat need to be for a full time live aboard?

Tony Brooks replied to Pairofsai's topic in New to Boating?

Unless you intend to be on a mooring with a mains shoreline think carefully about how you provide the electricity - especially if it has lead acid batteries. That goes for other modern appliances people think are now vital. It can be done, but often at a four figure cost and a roof full of solar panels, plus engine running for 1/3 of the year. Too many new to boating seem to think that a couple of solar panels will provide for all the comforts of a land based home.

Just wondering if anyone has advice or experience of the pros and cons of boat lengths for long-term live aboard? Thinking of things like showers and washing machines to make life easier. Looking at Wilderness Beavers and wondering are they too small to live on full time?

Jen has already answered, I would just add that I was just suggesting more or less the cheapest fogstar to give you something to consider, you mentioned the 300ah fogstar, which would give a far greater capacity than 3 x 110AH lead acids. You would have a usable capacity of between 240 and nearly 300AH depending on how far you wanted to discharge the lithiums compared to say 165AH for the lead acids to 50%. Think about what this means. You may no longer need to run your engine for an hour a day if your moored up for few days, because lithiums don't care if you discharge to low levels, 20% is often quoted, but you can go lower, without too much risk and they don't care if you leave them like that. Because they charge more efficiently, a few hours cruising will more than likely see them fully charged. You don't have to spend hours getting the last bit of charge in unlike LAs. You could start with one 105Ah fog star and add another later on, up to 4 I think with fogstar drift batteries. I'm not saying this is the "right" way, I just think you ought to consider it, you might still decide 3 lead acids suits your needs and current circumstances and nothing wrong with that, it's clearly the easiest, cheapest and "safe" option, but the cost difference to go Lithiums is not that great anymore.
