Personal attacks on forum and moderation

Featured Replies

Before replying -- please note this is not in any way a criticism of the CWDF moderators!!!

(though by implication it certainly is of the attitudes of some posters on CWDF...)

Below is a quote from a moderator on another respected forum (Ars Technica) about differences of opinion, and what is and isn't acceptable to the moderators there -- it comes from a discussion about SpaceX and Starship and Musk, which stirs up strong feelings. I can't help feeling that the same applies here on CWDF... ;-)

"Just to follow up my earlier remarks and add a little clarity: it's one thing to be critical of SpaceX and Elon Musk, or be a big fan of SpaceX and Elon Musk. Or big SpaceX fan, hate Elon Musk, whatever. The point being that personal views are in general fair game. Whether or not I personally agree with you has zero bearing on the moderation.

Where it's a problem is when you start attacking other people because they don't agree with your take.

Doesn't matter who you are or are not a big fan of, when you start telling other people they're morons for not being on your team you've crossed the line.

I cannot always catch that stuff, and it's not always reported, but I will do my best to keep that reined in."

In other words having different opinions and heated discussions (this is a *discussion* forum, after all...) are fine, and as part of this telling people they're wrong is going to happen -- and sometimes this will be true, and sometimes it won't. But telling them that they personally are stupid (or anything else attacking their personal life, or boating preferences) for disagreeing with you is not fine... :-(

Couldn't have said it better myself, and completely suport and agree with that.

As per the above our moderators do what they can to proactively ensure the site it a pleasant, civilised and enjoyable place for all, it is also upto the members to behave in a civilised way to each other. There is then the 'report' button which can be used as required to bring any specific issues directly to the attention of the moderator team.

Cheers

Daniel.

In my opinion you are one of the worst offenders of dismissing others views and opinions with suggestions of being 'Reform-types, keyboard warriors or CRT haters' to name but a few, coupled with winking emojis to mask the obvious insult.

And I expected exactly that response from you -- and the smiley approval from one of the usual suspects, who also often employs exactly the tactics I described, and similarly hates being contradicted by facts... :-(

You will of course be ignoring the fact that this was a general comment on some posters on CWDF, which is 100% accurate.

And again deliberately misinterpreting what I meant when I said "Reform-types", which was people who will gullibly swallow up anything that agrees with their views, regardless of whether it has any basis in reality -- as I explained, but you keep ignoring.

If you feel that you fall into any of those categories, that's your problem not mine... ;-) <== yes this is a winking emoji, suck it up!

Unlike certain other posters, I always try and counter other people's arguments with facts -- and if what I say is my opinion, I make it clear. What I don't do is personally attack them and belittle their views on the grounds that they're a holiday boater, or a Johnny-come-lately, or own an expensive boat which has not only a bow thruster but even scratches on it because it's used... ;-)

Perhaps you should read the comment above from one of the site moderators, and take notice of it instead of attacking me again... :-)

I quoted the insults you regularly throw at anyone (but often me) who disagrees with you or offers an opinion you don't like.

That you of all members should post such a thread is breath-taking hypocrisy in my view.

Perhaps you'll be willing to reassess your own posting ?

See posting above, not an attack, you would know it if it was, more a pi$$ take.

Nice to see that -- as usual -- all the responses/approvals (from the usual suspects...) are attacking or having a sly dig (supposedly humorous or not) at the poster, rather than addressing the subject of the post.

Which just demonstrates the truth of what was said -- and the attitude of those who posted those replies and approved of them. I expect the next one(s) will use more words like victim or martyr or hypocrite or [insert insult of choice], just to carry on proving the point... ;-)

Meanwhile I'll just refer you all back to the response from @DHutch :

"Couldn't have said it better myself, and completely suport (sic) and agree with that."

Does anyone take anything seriously on here? If there is someone who I find annoying I just put them on ignore and don't let them ruin my day.

The subject is all a storm in a teacup as far as I'm concerned. Far more important things to worry about such as am I using the right oil or is my prop too small?

I do the same -- you can deduce that you're not on my list at the moment... ;-)

But those kind of aggressive/personal responses -- especially against newbies, from those who consider themselves "real boaters" -- are what sour the atmosphere on CWDF, and have lead to people leaving or not joining in the first place

And it's noticeable that when challenged about it those who often make such comments come back with comments like "It's only banter" or "People should have thicker skins" or "hypocrite" -- all approved by those who think the same way -- to justify their unnecessary unpleasantness to others... :-(

"Must try harder", as your school report might well have said... ;-)

Mine was way worse than that I still remember it 60 years later.

" His astonishingly good exam** results only go to prove what we all knew. He is the classic example of a lazy schoolboy"

** Mid term assessment I was last in the class. Come the exam I was almost top of the class. Couldn't see the point in doing anything unless there was an exam.

Worked for me too, IIRC at least up to O levels -- at A level there was also a coursework/labs component, so you couldn't get away with skiving all year and then cramming like mad just before the exams... ☹️

Teachers seem to have a talent for failing to spot their promising pupils. Apparently one of Albert Einstein’s teachers told his parents he would ‘never amount to much.’

Indeed -- but sometimes the pupils don't exactly help either... 🤣

In my case they got me spot on.

As a young kid I was described as 'easily distracted.' A later comment as a teenager said that I was 'very interested in Beer.'

Both characteristics have endured to this day. 😁

I got seriously ill in my first year sixth and missed a couple of months, this gave the school the excuse to suggest it might be better if I didn't return for the 2nd year sixth. I still have the letter sent to my parents it's in a frame on my workshop wall🫣

If it hadn't been for the expulsion I wouldn't have had the great life that I did.

I hadn't seen it that way until you and Ian mentioned it 😱

I guess my mind no longer works that way.
