THE BATCHWORTH BOAT RALLY, RICKMANSWORTH May 17
THE BATCHWORTH BOAT RALLY, RICKMANSWORTH

This rally was started in 2024 when at very short notice the huge Rickmansworth Festival was cancelled. The Waterspace team decided to keep the boat gathering but as a much smaller event. With some enthusiastic parters it was a huge success in 2024.

So Next year as an appropriate "Theme" for the times we are Calling all GUCCCo, FMC, Severn & Canal boats.particularly those built in 1935 as next year the Batchworth Boat Rally would like to see them all gathering at Batchworth in Rickmansworth to celebrate their 90 years.
The rally will take place on 17/18th May, two weeks after the cavalcade at Little Venice.
Please put the date in your calendar for next year and drop us an email then we will make sure to include you on the mailing list when bookings open in January.

Lithium battery installation
Lithium battery installation

Jen-in-Wellies replied to PineappleGuy's topic in Boat Equipment

To charge the Fogstar batt from the 150A alternator, keep one Lead acid leisure battery to act as a buffer. You could use one of the new Victron 70A Orion XS battery to battery chargers to engine charge the Lithium batt. This keeps the charge current within 50% of the rated alternator current and should keep it safe from overheating. If you use Victron mppt controllers too, then getting a Cerbro unit means that the Cerbro can cut charge before the Fogstar BMS will, meaning there isn't a potential single point of failure, leading to overcharging. Install the Li batt somewhere that is not the cabin. There are add ons to the Cerbro software that will let it talk to the Fogstar battery. However, whoever you chose to do the installation will likely have their own ideas on kit to use. Run their proposal past the forum for a sanity check. Not all professional boat sparkies are au fait with Li batts yet.

Coming to this thread quite late (I wondered what could expand a simple thread to 5 pages), I've never really thought about the finer points of physics theory, but no doubt there is someone's research into another phenomenon with water flow in locks. I find I sometimes get impatient waiting for the last inch or so of water to allow the gate to open and find that if I push the beam hard enough it creates a wave that rebounds off the bottom gate and when it gets back to the top gate, it allows it to open fractionally when I can hold for a while allowing water to pass through the gap before it recedes and fills the last bit more quickly. Do I need to name it and produce a paper for it?😗 Just to add, The S&W is a canal we cruise a lot and all the options suggested make a good week's cruise. Maybe I tend to agree with @nicknorman about Stourbridge and it's a long walk from the moorings to the town which is generally not very interesting.

Jen-in-Wellies replied to Sid Charles's topic in Boat Building & Maintenance

How they look when installed. You still need all the other firebricks. This particular stove has a backboiler, which replaces the rear fire brick and baffle plate. They are on top of the base of the fire with no grate and funnel coal on to the grate region. Coal burns best with air coming up from underneath, through the grate. Keep them, or sell them. They are expensive to buy for a couple of bits of cast iron.

I assume the programmer thought this was an improvement, im not convinced, the previous version did seem a bit clumsy, but at least you knew where you were if you wanted to scroll.

Before you shout “oh no not again”, I have done some searching and reading (including https://www.canalworld.net/forums/index.php?/topic/127535-iwaca-guidance-note-on-lithium-battery-installation/), but I haven’t found the article that would make it clear to me what is needed in our case. The engine has two alternators, the small one (50A) charging the lead-acid starter battery and the bigger one (150A) charging 3 x 110Ah LA leisure batteries. I was thinking in terms of replacing the very tired leisure batteries with a single LiFePO4 (e.g. a 300Ah Fogstar?) but what other kit is required? We’re also considering adding solar panels so would that alter which extra item(s) to go for? If we went ahead, we would have the installation done professionally (and I guess that could double the price) but at the moment I’m just trying to understand what the parts might cost so I can present a reasonable case to the other owners of the boat.

I suspect that Rod has never had to speak at an emotion charged public event very soon after a much loved one's death. One just has to observe funeral/crem. services to see how easily some people can break down. If he did/has he may hold a very different view.

Any further update? I'd say that there has been a feeble attempt to tidy the engine using the wrong colour, a car spray can :( My Isuzu is darker, and the enamel is sort of cracked due to expansion. Its a good solid engine easy to service.
