  1. Sorry to be harsh but this proposal is utterly selfish, I would have thought better from the OP. Lots of us would love to go cruising but we aren't. Non-essential travel has been ruled out by the government - this is quite clearly non-essential travel. This is a classic case of entitlement and 'the rules don't apply to me'. And you say you're an expert in disease control??? So let presume you already have the virus but don't know it - how do you propose to get yourself from Goole to Ripon without touching anything on the way or once you get there? Using the excuse that we've been told to stay at home and therefore you can move about like this because your boat is your home is appaling pedantry. You know damn well that's not what the advice means and you're using a technicality to try and dodge round the rules. The 14 day rule has been relaxed for a reason - it's to try and prevent all non-essential boat movements, but allow boaters to still access vital services. People are dying because of selfish attitudes like yours. I'm frankly disgusted.

  3. For the record, we had five boats out prior to this weekend, all sent out before any boating restrictions or even pub closures were in place. Two of those have now returned. A third (out since the beginning of February) was at Cropredy this morning and will be back by Thursday evening. The remaining two are crewed by entirely unrelated couples from New Zealand who currently have nowhere else to go. As of this morning they are mulling over whether to return to base and live here for the next few months or hunker down where they are (one of which is a fair way north having already been out for a while), which will depend on the likelihood of continued availability of essential services where they are vs. how much grief they will get from people jumping to conclusions if they boat back. I note that here today there are still a number of private boats moving too but no one complaining about that, and forgive me if this sounds bitter, but I expect there'll be a thread on here soon complaining that all the boatyards are shut and how dare we as we're an essential service, probably started by the same people who normally post advice on avoiding boatyards at all costs as they're too expensive. Rant over Incidentally, if anyone needs fuel round here, I spoke with Rue at Armada Boat Hire this morning and he's going to stay open for fuel for the foreseeable, and if it gets to a point where he's unable to continue we'll pick up the baton.

  4. It seems some are hard of thinking on here. What is so difficult to understand about staying at home? If you have to ask if your job is essential, it isn't. If you are retired there is no excuse Stay at home. Stop procrastinating and JFDI.

  5. And, should you already happen to have the virus, and it causes you to need to be hospitalised - what then? Richard

  8. Anyway - more to the point, It seems to me that rather than being selfish, you are actually bloody scared. Which is far more understandable I'm finding the whole situation incredibly weird just at the moment Richard

  10. Remember it's not just older people getting the virus. Just a thought, if anyone's hunkering down miles from anywhere, think about mooring near a road, saving the possibility of poor paramedics needing to trog for long distances with heavy machine packs on their backs to rescue you. Those packs are flaming heavy. Also worth taking a note of 'Just 3 words' directions. I expect sanny and water points are mainly near a road.

  11. You are still allowed out for exercise and I could imagine in some people's situations making a short drive to somewhere they can walk without meeting others more sensible than from the front door on what maybe a busy pavement.

  13. Sincerely hope they are. I cannot travel to my boat as it is not an essential journey and some marinas are stopping leisure moorers from visiting their boats. Seems ridiculous that there might still be companies hiring.

  16. Not everybody is profiteering.....Hardware shop in the next town along has secured a good supply of handwash, disinfectant spray, gloves etc, at more or less standard prices, so he put this on the local town facebook group. We phoned to check availability, he said shop closed to customers, pay by card via phone app, will deliver to your door, no human contact. We told him we lived on a boat and would meet him at a bridge, he said no, stay on boat, goods will be left on front deck. This is not an advert but must mention the shop name...Totally Screwed Hardware ? ..............Dave

  21. I witnessed the cane in use 3 times in Kerala 18 months ago. 2 young policewomen were combing Trivandrum railway station for loiterers. Most moved immediately when challenged. One bloke argued with them he was set on by both of the girls, gave him a proper beating. I was 'loitering' myself, killing some time before going to the airport. I didn't know this was illegal. I didn't argue when they approached me but had to collect my bag from left luggage. An argument ensued between the police and the bloke on the counter when we got there. I didn't understand but I'm guessing the police were saying he shouldn't have accepted by bag, as my railway ticket had expired. He got a beating as well. The third one was a French guy who was running a guesthouse in Varkala without a working visa. Two policemen spoke to him in English then set on him with the canes, before dragging him off. India is a brutal country.

  24. That’s not the case. In his email to me this morning he said: ’Please don’t worry, we understand that it is not possible for you to have the BSS inspection done at present’ We have to give them chance to work everything out, these are unprecedented times aren’t they and there will be lots of issues to consider.

  25. Let's assume you are however, incubating COVID-19 but have no symptoms yet, like a lot of people currently are. Everything you touch in Homebase will be infectious for three days, so anyone else touching it after you will pick up the virus. Even those 20m away from you. On the other hand, the bag of compost you're buying may have been put out by an employee currently incubating the virus, and now you're covered in it having picked up the bag after he/she handled it. And don't even think about all the £20 notes in your pocket, and how many CV-19 positive people have handled those.... Life's a gamble, but this is one you don't need to be taking.

  26. The other thing is, explanations for the rules are not forthcoming. We are just being told what to do. People on here still writing about travelling around don't seem to understand the reasons not to. Same with hand-washing. When they first started telling us to do this, I had no idea why, exactly. I didn't know the virus could live on surfaces for three days, and could be picked up from those surfaces at any time during those three days. I still don't think most people understand this. Point being, if the gov't told us the reasons behind the rules, a lot more people would understand and comply, I suspect.

  27. Sick of people thinking it's all a great joke and walking very close to the boat while we're sat in the bow so we're trying this. C&RT have asked people not to walk past moored boats at all but this needs to be publicised to safeguard us live aboards.

  32. Just been shopping. First I tried the home delivery crap bu no hope. So I went to the nearly empty well stocked shop and strolled round 20 feet from anybody else and had a lovely relaxed shop. Then popped to the local butcher and had a choice of real meat.

  38. Well we have been joined by Britain in lockdown. Not that is any consolation in itself , but there is increasing evidence that in the absence of a vaccine it is the best tool we have currently got, but only if it obtains near total support. I am still enjoying those photographic contributions. Spring is beautiful in Britain.

  41. If there are 2 isolators I would attach a label to each stating the location of the other one, so there is no risk of somebody switching just one off and assuming that the electrics are now safe to work on.

  42. I've searched for the app on Google store, but it's not come up. I've also searched for a website based app... but that failed too. It looks great. You don't have to be ill, you put your info in, like if you've asthma, age, etc. Then for a couple of minutes every day you update the app. I'll keep trying to download it as it's something maybe I can contribute to.

  45. I would think it is a case of seeing if people abide by the rules and if they don’t then there will have to be measures used to enforce that, just as will be the case off the waterways.
