  1. If the mods do not respond to this, publicly, I can see it escalating. MtB has over 35000 posts and is a regular poster in a huge variety of subjects. This does not give him any more rights than any other poster regarding the rules - nor does it give him any less. It appears he was given no explanation of his warnings and this is fundamentally wrong. He has chosen to go public with this and the mods cannot claim that they cannot comment in public. Explain, and do it quickly for the sake of everybody.

  2. I am just going outside and I may be some time. Issuing warnings to members without citing the post they are being warned for or the posting guideline they have breached illustrates to me the contempt in which the management here holds the members. I was warned twice last night with no explanation of why. I can probably guess but I shouldn't have to. It would be common courtesy to tell members which rule they have breached breached and in which pos but Team Mod elect not to. I find this simply insulting and I don't want to be part of a forum that treats its members like this, so I'm taking a break from CWF. Just so you know, LadyG and Lola.

  3. I would have thought that what we really should be saying is "Well done, CRT, for completing a complex job at the time you pronised, rather than looking for criticisms." Maybe, that is too much to ask for on this forum of experts! Howard

  6. What has happened here lately? Seems to be more chat about mods/moderation/personal insults flying about than there is about boating. Maybe the winter making people cranky.Relax, dont stress, enjoy the day. MTB will be back when he calms down.

  7. I would like to thank C&RT and their contractor Kier for repairing the breach within the estimated time scale. Admittedly it is no more than we could reasonably expect as licence payers having waited since the end of March, approximately 9 months. I would also thank C&RT for the massive financial contributions the project has made to the local farming economy. Has a boat managed to navigate the repaired length yet?

  11. Series 5 BMW or not, it would be a dangerous assumption to think that Sustrans employees are excessively paid for the work they do. This is probably more realistic. https://www.indeed.co.uk/cmp/Sustrans/salaries Certainly doesn't seem to be top league compared to (say) CRT. I'm sure you are sensible enough not to judge an organisation based solely on the behaviour of one of it's employees. Every organisation tends to have some idiots within it, and I suspect it is more that you got unlucky than that he was typical of the whole organisation.

  28. Let's do the maths, shall we? According to Wikipedia, the power of a particular type of TGV train is 9.6MW. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SNCF_TGV_POS That's probably a reasonable ball-park for an HS2 high speed train, yes? That's the maximum power, when it's accelerating flat out. The electrical power output of Hinckley C is planned to be 3260MW https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hinkley_Point_C_nuclear_power_station. So half the power of Hinckley C is enough to power (3260/2)/9.6 equals 170 HS2 trains, all going flat out, all at the same time, 24/7. Does that sound likely? I'm calling FAKE NEWS. MP.

  33. My one encounter with Sustrans was not positive. Whilst working as a K&A Trust volunteer at Frome road Wharf in Bradford on Avon, a Sustrans representative came into the workshops with the intention of gaining our support for the Sustrans proposals to make the Towpath a cycleway. His manner was arrogant and bullying, and when we questioned the details of his proposal, he accused us of not being environmentally friendly, and told us quite forcefully, that we did not know what we were talking about. He eventually stormed off in a huff, got into his series five BMW, and roared off out of the car park in a cloud of dust, we were not impressed.

  35. Well worth it though, no point scrimping hey Rach. I could of got it a bit cheaper from a local supplier but they come in 6m lengths only and need to be ordered in, and collection is a pain. Also got all parts delivered together, cant be bothered faffing about to much nowadays. It is a bit harder kida, 318 SS / A4 you mean? Just a matter of slowing the drill nit down a bit and use good bits.

  39. Is the need for a 'sacrificial edge' just a myth? My boat (not a narrow boat) has spent its life on canals (mostly French) but has also ground and scraped its way along the G.U. and K &A as well as the Wey and a whole lot of unsuitable waterways sometimes with some very iffy steering skills. It has an underwater chine where most wear would be expected to occur and this is perfectly ok.. Just being controversial you understand.

  40. Five years ago, i looked into the feasibility of an all electric boat with massive battery and solar banks. I think the idea is fabulous, but at the time the cost was prohibitive and the technology not quite there. I wish you every success. Is your boat a wide beam? How big is you battery bank? Also do you have a generator to charge your batteries in the winter? Cheers Mike

  43. Hi Allan, That may be true, but I wasn't speaking about cause; rather I was trying to give some praise where it is due, namely finishing the repairs when CRT had promised, which is laudable, but there are those on this forum who only look for something to critisise. Howard

  46. Crick/Rugby DIRFT (Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal) which is 9 miles from Daventry but 1 mile from Crick and 5 from Rugby) has approximately 500 outgoing HGV, 200 x 7.5 or 3.5t trucks and numerous courier style transits every day exiting its depots. Delivering are approx 2-300 trucks a day - in addition to the many containers delivered via rail. Allied to this are the thousands of cars and buses to transport the workers to site for 2 or 3 shifts a day(24 hours) depending on how ruthless the agencies are. There are many more(Gailey, Stafford and many more planned), one more enormous one to come is based South of Blisworth which will wreck the countryside). The country is overpopulated, overmanaged and struggling to breathe. He doesn't know what he is saying most of the time.

  47. Just to close this thread - we've just escaped after 6 months being stuck on the Basingstoke. We (Nbs Ceilidh and Legend) came on at the at the end of May, each with a month's licence. A few days later Lock 18 gates were damaged and required replacing. This took 2 months, by which time we were in the middle of the drought. There was insufficient water to fill the pounds that had been drained to enable the repair, a situation that got worse as first the Hampshire pound then the Surrey pound were closed to Navigation. It looked like we were going to be entombed on the Basingstoke until April - 10 months. Lovely though the Basingstoke is - we feel we've 'done' it now, so were pleased to hear the Deepcut flight was re-opening last week. We have just made good our escape up to the K&A after a bit of a Thames cruise to try and get some use from our (unrefundable) gold licences. - Phew!

  48. Charles, My advice is, if you can get enough done to the boat in time to be ready (heating is important!), and the Soar isn't in flood at the time, go for it with me as crew. Knowing that you're looking at using the break between the stoppages, I've just had a look through the CRT notices and yes, you have that window from 14th December to 7th Jan. It's actually a little tighter than you thought, because there's another stoppage further down the GU at Winkwell also starting on 7th Jan, and there's a new bridge being installed near Horsenden Hill on the Paddington Arm from 3rd Jan, although they do say that one may have times when boats are allowed through inbetween work. But canalplan, which I've always found gives good estimates, confirms that your whole trip is about 100 hours of boating, so allowing 7 hours a day which is quite comfortable in mid winter, that's 14 days, i.e. arriving about 28th Dec. Because I do this sort of trip for fun not for a living, I'm cheap, I only expect somewhere to lay my sleeping bag on the boat, plus food for the journey. So long as no money changes hands, my understanding is that I'm covered by your normal boat insurance. I believe the standard practice is they allow you to have guests on the boat, and for those guests to take part in the boating so long as you are on the trip too. They'll often say that only someone competent may steer the boat, but I'm sure I have enough experience for that. I cannot accept money because then I'd be a professional boat mover (like matty40s). People who do that need their own insurance, which also allows them to go single handed. Conversely if someone pays you to go on your boat, other legal obligations arise. I'd be quite happy to do the whole trip, either in one hit or with a break for Christmas (somewhere in west London) if you prefer. The only part of it I haven't done before is the last day or two, after you turn from the Regent's Canal into the Hertford Union. Stress not, this trip would be a fun relaxing winter holiday. I'll PM you my phone number. Peter
