THE BATCHWORTH BOAT RALLY, RICKMANSWORTH May 17
THE BATCHWORTH BOAT RALLY, RICKMANSWORTH

This rally was started in 2024 when at very short notice the huge Rickmansworth Festival was cancelled. The Waterspace team decided to keep the boat gathering but as a much smaller event. With some enthusiastic parters it was a huge success in 2024.

So Next year as an appropriate "Theme" for the times we are Calling all GUCCCo, FMC, Severn & Canal boats.particularly those built in 1935 as next year the Batchworth Boat Rally would like to see them all gathering at Batchworth in Rickmansworth to celebrate their 90 years.
The rally will take place on 17/18th May, two weeks after the cavalcade at Little Venice.
Please put the date in your calendar for next year and drop us an email then we will make sure to include you on the mailing list when bookings open in January.

Rough costs for converting an ex-hire boat to a livaboard

Inverter/charger is a Victron Quattro 48/10000 -- needed because I have a 9kVA Kohler generator and a 48V 700Ah LFP battery. Washer/drier is nothing special, a standard Zanussi -- can't remember exact model it's the 8kg capacity one. Being able to throw dirty/wet clothes in and have them come out clean and dry a few hours later is nice, especially in wet weather when drying them any other way is difficult. Running the engine and charging big LFP batteries with a standard alternator is not a good idea, both from the point of view of long running times and alternator overheating (and terrible efficiency). If this is your chosen charging method it would be better to install an externally-regulated (Wakespeed? Zeus?) high-power DC alternator (which will need a polyvee belt drive), or a Travelpower which generates AC (up to 5kW?) and feed this into the inverter/charger to charge the batteries. Neither of these options is cheap (well into four figures...), but will greatly reduce your engine running time. Basically the problem is that high-power electrics to run high-power electrical appliances are not a good fit to a standard diesel/alternator boat setup, the appliances are cheap but the electrical system needed to support them is definitely not, and when there's no sun you'll end up running the engine for many hours while burning fuel (very inefficiently!), wearing the engine, and annoying yourself and your neighbours... :-(

Thank you Arthur, I was surprised to find I could tie up with ease the first place I landed. It’s why I’m reluctant move too often as I can’t get far under current circumstances. Very good to know about Congleton Wharf. I might cycle up on my bike for a reccy.

To be frank, until you live on a particular boat you cant possibly determine which adaptations you will need. Almost every electrical appliance is a challenge, they are generally designed for UK mains. The reason i dont use my mains washing machine is that I would be worried that if it is running while I am cruising it might go on fire. I would be OK with one of those tiny twin tubs from that point of view. I just hand my laundry over to someone else, and they do it for me, simple. You have read that buying a Lithium battery will solve all your problems, if only it were that simple every boat on the cut would have one, but they don't There may also be an insurance issue, discussed elsewhere. I see you have cottoned on to moving every 14 days. Clogging the arteries with boats which are shuffling to and from is likely to lead to changes in interpretation of the Navigation rules.

Thanks! I understand that everything comes with (sometimes pretty big) caveats. Realistically, I'm not going to run the dryer more than 3 times a month but it's such a huge convenience that I don't want to not have it. Also, I don't mind plastering my roof with solar and to time my washing/drying with when I'm cruising every two weeks or so or running the engine for a bit (in winter). So it sounds like that would be doable with a proper battery/inverter/solar/alternator? Luckily, the cost of these things has also come down massively over the last few years! I'm now feeling that the best course of action is to find a boat with hull/engine in decent condition, a multi-fuel stove already installed and a cabin I can tolerate (and then do up). The add or upgrade batteries/solar/alternator/inverter. That's probably the most effective way of doing this. Can I ask what kind of inverter and washing machine you're using?

Not sure you could say it was a country. It was a territory of the Ottoman empire for centuries, before going to Britain in the carve up after the collapse from losing WW1. The Ottomans didn't bother that much what ethnicity you were, religion you followed, or language you spoke, just as long as you paid your taxes and didn't cause trouble. The Zionists got their idea of an ethno Jewish state from others in Europe in the late 19th, early 20th centuries, when big empires, like the Ottoman, Austro Hungarian and Russian were faltering. The idea of each ethnic group having it's own nation state was a common one and they ran with it. The big chance came after WW2, when there was a lot of sympathy for European Jewish people, for obvious reasons. Gave the Zionists the chance to convert the colonies they had in Palestine into a nation state and engage in the first round of ethnic cleansing, without any trouble from the big powers of the time. The British Empire were happy to be rid of a troublesome colony and the grief they had from terrorist groups and the indigenous Palestinians.
