Karen Lea Rainey
Just ended a 6 day cruise down the cov and up the ashby to sutto wharf, i noticed that when we pass a boat coming in the opposite direction, the person on the stern always turns round about 5 seconds after passing. You could literally count the 5 seconds and watch them turn around, it got me thinking we were towing something, there was something to look at but it happens to all boaters. Is it courtesy, to see your ok or is it just habit, everyone seems to do it, why?.
zenataomm
There was a bloke recently spotted on The Coventry and Ashby canals who wasn't waiting any time at all before looking back. Others found he was already observing them.
Dave Payne
I always do it, as do most boaters passing me... I like to think they envy my good looks and my boat.

Alan de Enfield
Maybe they cannot believe such a 'gorgeous dolly bird' is driving a boat and they just want another look at you before you disappear into the sunset.
Keeping Up
I think everybody does it. I like to look back and see if the other boat has run aground after we passed - it happens in about 10% of cases.
Ray T
I do it to see if the boat I've passed has any Roses & Castles on the back doors.

Rob-M
Maybe checking to see if the other steerer has any trousers on, could be on a trad stood on the steerers step with lots of heat around them.
Mac of Cygnet
I don't do it. Sorry. Unless I think I should know them. I did it to Allan Jones (Keeping Up) on the Macc a couple of months back, and so did he, but I didn't run aground and neither did he.

john6767
I do it, but I don't know why really, I guess it is just part of looking at what is going on around you, oh and to watch them go aground of course.

Tiggs
If someone coming towards you looks behind BEFORE he passes, beware that there is likely to be a following boat; even though he does not warn you.

RLWP
I often look back to see where I have ended up relative to the other boat. Usually it is dead in line with their stern, which pleases me Richard
