  3. It doesn't matter much whether a stated rule is legally binding or not. Most laws are unenforceable - for example, it's actually against the law to stab people, but you can't stop people doing it. You can punish them afterwards if you can find them, but that doesn't actually stop the nuisance in the first place. A law which is neither going to be obeyed or possible to enforce is pointless. That's why the t&c's are worth having as a guideline. They're simple to understand and cheap, and largely enforced by peer pressure. If you want noise nuisance to be controlled and policed, you have first to define it, then hire a million noise coppers to crack down on it. I think the licence fee might have to go up.

  11. Having always owned (ex)working boats, I can find myself at the end of the day thinking "only one (or two) miles to the next spot I can get the boat in". During that one or two miles I often don't pass another moored boat, but as sure as eggs are eggs, as I turn the last bend, there is another boat tied up there. I know the next suitable spot is another two miles away so, sorry, you've got company for the night.

  16. Well the Trojans are imported and the value of the £ has dropped 20% in the last three years. I have no idea why that could have happened....

  17. I remember Quercus well, I wrote it around then. All of the notice boards at the yard had it spelt Querqus and that was how I laid it out. Director Alan Green dropped into the paint dock and queried my spelling, before I put paint on so disaster was avoided. I wasn’t always so lucky......when Brum Boats were taken over by Alvechurch, many boats changed names. One such, with a small name panel was rechristened “ Lichfield Cathedral”. One side worked out fine, if somewhat cramped. On the other side she turned into an Irish boat “ Lichfield Catedral “. Of course, I didn’t spot the omission until the shading was almost complete. Bugger. Out with the rag and white spirit and off I went again......

  18. I know little about lithium batteries, but was reading this much quoted website today. I am sure you are familiar with it:- http://nordkyndesign.com/from-lead-acid-to-lithium-new-battery-technology-for-power-on-board/ I would be asking why most adopters of lithium on this forum have opted for the individual cell method with associated cell monitoring before pressing that buy button. I would also like to adopt Lithium, but I believe a large amount of knowledge and a clear plan of how it will integrate with existing charging equipment and necessary low and high voltage protection is required before any buying commences. That "bargain" can quickly turn into an expensive mistake unless you fully understand the requirements imo. At the very least, I would request a data sheet for the battery in question to try and learn more about the inbuilt BMS and charging requirements. Good luck. Eta. Beaten by a muppet. I shall go back to sleep. Time for bed....... Boing.

  19. Unless you are an experience narrow boater there is much to be said for getting cheaper second-hand boat as close to you spec as possible and then living with it for a year or so. Only then sell the boat and have a new one built. All to often what you do need ends up very different from what you think you need at the start. If I were going for a new build I would be looking at Colecraft but then I want workmanlike, not high end. I would also not be looking for a new build.

  21. A quick rundown of events, yesterday afternoon when it became obvious that we were going over we went through the moorings releasing boats and putting them on long lines, only one sank due to being chained down! We had to cut loads of lines because people insist on using crap polyprop rope which the then knot so that it cant be undone, they also have centerlines on why? the river broke its bank opposite me it was also over the locks at Rotherham so we had a very substantial current running past us. At about 2 ish in the morning we hit the top and were floating well over the bank, I had a scaffolding pole tied to the rear stantion on the boat and a step ladder at the bow, both these stopped the boat going onto the bank, at 5 ish I went out as the water was receding Carolyne a neighbour came out as well [we did this in 2007 as well] and started pushing boat of the bank back into the canal, it was freezing and to be honest foolhardy as the bank was full of debris! At about half 6 we had all the boats sorted out and retired to have a shower as we were filthy and stank [sewage station up river from us] now its a glorious day washing machine is on mug of tea and breakfast gone, and all is well in my world.

  26. My design used MOSFETs, can't remember which offhand The load resistors are 15 ohm, so the shunt current is only around 200mA. I used opto-isolators to drive the MOSFET gates, to make the circuit design easy and avoid level shifters. MP.

  33. I'm saving up for a copy of my own.The MOT bloke didn't seem to know much about Lithiums. I could have borrowed it I spose. It was an interesting article. The author is a liveaboard boater, who seemed to know what he was on about, but it is difficult to tell with these articles how much knowledge the author actually has on the subject.

  37. Don't be so daft. It is interesting enough doing it in a lumpy water boat with a big keel.....to keep it upright........ The channel would be doable if you have a weather window of 12 hours or so following a week of no wind but still an issue of wash from the big botes, but no chance of stable enough conditions for a coastal passage. Lumpy water botes are designed so they shouldn't invert or let water in the sides through all the holes. NBs are not.

  41. Its still a very different (and lovely) world on the canals, rather than a website for checking out boatbuilders, towards the upper end of the market the builders will check you out (in person) and decide if they want to work with you. .................Dave

  44. Which brings me back to my original point. Use the 8 to 8 rule as an example. Merely courteous, why go round in effect telling people they can be as bloody minded as they like and run their engine until 3 in the morning if they like. To publicise that a rule is unenforceable and not backed by law gives the growing number of antisocial inconsiderate people carte blanche to do what they like and verbally abuse (hopefully nothing worse) those who ask them to be reasonable. Daft or even in itself a little antisocial IMO (other opinions are available).

  47. I was taught the metric system at school and I'm 56. My 62 year old brother says the same. I can cope with either but prefer metric as it's simple and straightforward. I bought a guide to woodworking with a router and the paragraphs showing how to calculate offsets when you're using a 3/16" bit on a curve of radius 1 5/8" with a baseplate of width 3 7/8" is insane. Move onto a consistent and logical system for heaven's sake. This is such a dull argument. People who suggest there's something "better" about imperial are just showing how unwilling they are to change their minds and move with the times; thisgs were better in them olden days. No they weren't. And when you have people of 56 and 62 who understand the metric system, how old do you have to be to make the utterly tedious claim that you don't understand? People choose not to understand as though it makes them look clever in some way. It doesn't. It makes them look daft, hidebound and reactionary.
