  1. Does anyone remember what CWDF was like before the internet was invented? When you joined you got a big set of box files for each section. One for General Boating, One for Newbies, etc. Inside each was a set of dividers for each topic and a printed sheet for each topic and reply. If you wanted to reply you had to type it out and post it to one of the moderators. They would then type it out with carbon paper, one for each member and post them all out. When you received a reply from the postie you read it, then filed it in the appropriate box folder and topic section. Jen

  5. Yes. Here's a picture of Baildon with the blue tin at WFBCo in 1999. Owl was being restored at the same time.

  6. We used to worship Thursdays because that was when Exchange & Mart came out, although if you had a paper round with the local Newsagent you could get a copy Wednesday night! We were able to do paper rounds, help the milkman or give the Pop Man a hand because we were allowed out and didn't rely on an inhaler to drag our fat little bodies around.

  7. We played footy in the street; climbed trees, fell out, broke an arm or two; went train spotting; made good use of the local swimming baths; went for long cycle rides, often on the pavement, got a clip round the ear from the local bobby; flew control line model aircraft, built Airfix model kits and a myriad of other outdoor activities.

  8. It’s like the old adage from a publishing house... Trainee: What did we used to do before fax machines were invented? Old hand: We used to do things on time, son.

  9. Toyota and BMW don't think hydrogen powered cars are a waste of time. https://www.toyota.co.uk/new-cars/new-mirai/meet-mirai.json#1 http://www.hydrogencarsnow.com/index.php/bmw-i8-hydrogen/ Both companies, and no doubt others, continue to work on cells because hydrogen is readily available and lithium and other rare materials required for batteries are scarce and expensive to mine. Battery powered EV's are a stepping stone towards fuel cell powered vehicles in my opinion. I have managed projects to install wind turbines and am fully aware of their limitations. If there wasn't a subsidy available, no one would be installing them commercially.

  11. Oh great so we go from burning fuel to burning fuel. Biomass isn't sustainable for the amount of energy we will require so it will just equal deforestation. Nuclear is one of the cleanest solutions around and is really the only solution to reduce green house gases as well as provide are needs for energy in the future.

  12. Problem with wind and solar energy is that isn't there when you need it to be. For example a cold foggy November night. Also wind turbines struggle to reach 50% of their badged output, even in off shore locations because that is too little or too much wind or the turbine is down for maintenance (this is acknowledged in the article). Inland locations are worse, typically 10-25% of badged output. We need more clean power stations of the nuclear variety to produce power of cold, dark winter nights. As for electric planes and trucks, what operator will give up 50% or more of payload to accommodate batteries unless the government subsidise it? As others say hydrogen internal combustion or fuel cells are they way forward in the long term.

  13. LPG isn’t as energy dense as petrol tho, so you need more of it for the same range. You also need a more robust tank to hold it. Hydrogen/fuel cell makes more sense for electric cars rather than battery technology.

  16. The broken beams are just resting on the uprights, so potentially dangerous. Once they are removed that will make it safe. If it was not actually fastened open and was just using the counter weights to keep it open, this would seem to be the most likely cause. The solution will probably be to remove the bridge I think, why waste the money on repairing it.

  30. And who is going to buy and maintain the battery? The consumer? Why would that benefit the consumer if we can already get 24/7 energy from the grid? The energy company? Why would they want to maintain batteries on multiple sites, they already go installing smart meters so they don't have to visit you. There is also the issue of the the amount of materials for the battery technology as they are not built from the most abundant materials! They say you would need around 7 weeks of storage if you went just used Wind and Solar.

  31. Can't bring floating equipment in , there's nowt to float in. Perhaps a temporary timber road down that nice new cycleway with excavator and appropriate sized dump trucks? All very expensive and messy. Doing it manually with "volunteers" in the canal would nowadays be regarded as a health & safety nightmare. Thinking a bit more, they can put an excavator IN the canal using the hardcore road that they obviously left in place for that purpose and retreat along the canal digging it away as they go.

  38. Or methane gas. Think of all the sewage going to waste. 1 full Porta-Pottie cassette would propel a car along for a considerable distance, depending on the users diet. A Porta-Pottie could even be used as the drivers seat to do its converting whilst going along. This could give the car an unlimited mileage, perhaps just stopping occasionally to top up at drive through burger and pizza huts. It wouldn't be MPG anymore, but MPT instead. There would be a big run on in car air fresheners and toilet rolls. There would be a sudden healthy rise in vegetarians too, as fruit and veg would generates more methane. Eggs would be avoided at all cost for fear of constipatiion which would severely shorten the cars duration and even bring it to a standstill in the piddle of nowhere.

They want me to scrap a perfectly good low mileage car and replace it with a new one so a bunch of chelsea tractor owners in lunun can carry on poluting their overcrowded slum.,,

  45. What is all this nonsense about women being unwilling /unable to steer boats into locks? Jan nearly always steered our boat into locks, whilst I did the lock wheeling, and to be honest she was a lot better than many men who were prepared to let their wives struggle with heavy gates, whilst they were engaged in the "more important role" of stopping the boat from hitting them. She always preferred to go into double locks second after the first boat had been secured, as that ensured that there was no violent hull bashing which many men seemed unable to avoid. What was more annoying was the condescending "Well done" which she often got when performing the task without collision, as if it was something a woman was not expected to be able to do. Although more women are now taking on the steering role, there still is an unfortunate sexist atttude amongst many men that steering is a "man's job" which women are unable to perform, or even allowed learn how to do.

  46. I agree. Obviously the windlass has to be light enough for ladies to carry and use as they are primarily for female use and only to be used by males when single handed.

  48. OK, let me see if I can express myself a bit more clearly. I was suggesting that all of us, whether we like it or not, make some sort of an impression on other people through the way we look/dress; and that it's therefore not the case, as I felt you were implying, that those who feel the need to make an impression can choose to do so, and those who don't feel the need can simply "opt out". And I'm sorry, but unless you let other people choose your clothes, haircut etc. for you, you do make choices about the the way you come across to other people. There's no way around it. You do it by wearing trousers rather than a kilt, a blue jumper rather than a pink hoody, and in a hundred other ways. Oh, and I doubt it's your dislike of tattoos that might be coming across as 'sanctimonious' to some people. That's simply a matter of taste, after all. More likely it's your moral condemnation of them, sometimes expressed using religious language such as 'desecration'. As for the impression you've given some people of having a 'superiority complex', again, I wonder if this has less to do with your expression of a simple dislike of tattoos and more to do with the way you've patronised tattooed people as 'faddists' and talked as if you're somehow above such things as being conscious of the impression you make on other people through your appearance.
