  4. I never leave a boat in a lock going up or down without anyone at the paddles. If the boat hooks up the steerer cant do anything

  6. In no way trying to start a competition but I got the impression the OP took exception to me saying he probably does not know the engine model and engine number - both of which he will need if he needs spares. I just feel sorry for him on so many levels.

  9. If you buy your wood from B&Q it's all bent. Just need to select one with the right bend.

  11. Indeed. Different boats, even of similar lengths can behave very differently. After two 58 foot shareboats, both of which were happy to stay close to the bottom gates when going up, we bought a 60 foot boat which behaved very differently. On the fiercer uphill locks, like Deptmore Lock and most of the T&M locks, it is pulled very strongly forward, sometimes hitting the gates even in reverse with with full revs. I had to quickly adapt my uphill technique and rest the front fender on the gate in uphill locks.

  19. No nastiness that I saw. Simply frustration with you not answering simple questions, leaving us all to guess. Perhaps we shouldn't have bothered, seeing as you can't be bothered to help yourself.

  21. And how much does it cost for someone to respond to them, maybe wasting some of the limited funds available that could be better spent on dredging or repairing a bit of infrastructure.

  23. Our system is over 13 years old of everyday use as liveaboards. I replace the seals on the docking station about every 11 months, clean it and lubricate them regularly. The flush ball lasts about 4 years before it requires replacement. It holds vacuum overnight with no problem.

  34. Could you provide a photo of the big hole in the engine, both close up, and wider angle? Just so someone who may be able to help can see exactly where it is and what might have caused it. It would also help to provide a photo of the whole engine, perhaps from above, and from both sides. FYI the colour of an engine can be a guide to identifying it. Mine is a yellow Mitsubishi 4 cylinder, which suggests that it was marinised by Vetus. I used to have a green Montego 2000 4 cylinder, which suggested it was marinised by Volvo Penta, and so on.

  35. Yes it is, for some years. Can't remember how long.. Supposedly random boat owners picked. Had at least one before. Jen

  38. No ropes needed. Just use the engine to stop the boat as it touches the cill or top gate, then leave it in neutral or tick over in forward gear.

  41. There isn't much trade on the upper river, and it's limited to high water, however when leaving Hull Marina you want to time your arrival at Goole 2 hours before high water or later otherwise it will cost to use the lock. Don't arrive later as you might have to wait for a gap in the commercial traffic. Check the weather carefully and buy current charts from ABP to ensure you know where the channel is. If you do run aground on a rising tide however you will just have to wait until you're floating again but best avoided. It's not a problem on any sort of boat so long as you plan the trip. Talk to local boaters and see if someone who knows the river wants to come along. I know of a good pilot if you want one. Cheers, Mike

  42. You said: They are a useful accessory for newcomers to assist in mooring with a strong wind, but you become addicted..., which sounds a lot more absolutist than it's easy to become addicted. You're backtracking a little. I don't think your suggestion is necessarily as reasonable as you think. Some people with BTs hardly use them so you wouldn't notice. Don't automatically assume that if you don't hear a BT the boat hasn't got one Anyway, it does get boring when someone comes on with a question and it immediately descends into the same old nonsense.

  43. I did meet a boater who had suffered serious anti-social behaviour including thieving from another boat. He waited till said boater was away and drilled a hole in the bottom of his boat. .................Dave

  45. At least as a boater you can easily move away from your antisocial neighbour. Bricks and mortar dwellers don't have the same option.

  47. I won't comment on price. However, you say you want to make it more 'open plan, removing cupboards...'. Before you do that, I suggest that you pack up everything you need for a few weeks aboard (I'm guess you aren't intending to live aboard). Clothes, food, tools, bedding, towels, toilet paper, cleaning stuff; everything you would want. Everything. Now put it all away in the boat. If there is spare storage, then think about removing it.

  49. The 8 to 8 “rule” isn’t just about generators, it is about running engine when moored as well. So you were absolutely right to complain. I can sympathise but unfortunately there are an increasing number of selfish people about these days. You just have to stick to your guns and try not to let it spoil your day - which I appreciate can be easier said than done.
