    I have just picked up 'Through the French Canals' by Philip Bristow, in hardback, ex North Yorks County Council Libraries, and 'Waterways In Europe' by Roger Pilkington, dedicated 'to John, full steam ahead! from Dad, Christmas 72. The things one finds while out for an evening glass of rosé in the Haute Vienne!

    I like the Colchimax, as it has opium in it, along with the crocus extract (which is a deadly poison, by the way.)

    I think it can be pâté, game, some shellfish, beer yeast, all the things we should probably consume in moderation anyway.

    Yes, uric acid, but why does the level rise? The classic symptom is waking up with a very tender swollen big toe.

    What did he get given for gout? I was prescribed Colchimax, and it worked perfectly. What caused his gout, or mine, is a whole other question.

    They're a pest species but do make for good fishing and good eating. If you catch one, kill it and eat it, like the french do, filletted and fried with a sauce of your choice, accompanied by frites, and salad.

    Long ago someone told me how he caught crayfish. Get an old bicycle wheel (minus tyre), tie a string to the axle, and some old chicken bones to the spokes near the axle, drop into the water, leave on the bottom a while, then smartly pull the trap up and hopefully there will be signal crayfish eating the bait.
