  1. No, the point I was making which YOU have not grasped was that the waterways are working pretty well by and large, these days in my experience. Yes there are problems and yers possibly in 20 years time it will have all fallen apart, but you said you sold up because cannot be dealing with an authority that doesn't want to be, or something like that. This seems an weird reason to sell your boat when practically, at the moment they are doing it all pretty well. I agree in 20 years the outlook is poor, but I'll keep my boats until then rather than sell up while there is a shedload of good boating still available.

  6. They are a nonsense. Weld over the ends and job done. The bar at the back end attached to the rudder moves and steers the boat it REALY is that simple. Bowthrusters are for incompetents much the same as reversing sensors on cars. Use the corrosion to get the price reduced then simply weld it up. My present boat at only 68 feet doesnt have one thank god but its way too short to need one I suppose if the boat you are buying is 150 feet plus then they may be useful on a very odd occasion.

  10. No and that is where Internet mistakes creep In. The poster from here asked for a police number on narrow boat users facebook group so that he could post a message on here. It was the regulars on that group who seemed to take umbrage at him asking for the number. The important point being that at that point the owner had not posted it, was not a member of the group and had not been party to the fractious discussion. This somehow interpretated on here as the owner refusing to give a number and comments being made based on that misinterpretation. Nothing could be further from the truth the owner was not even aware of the Facebook request at the time and was not involved in the argument. If the owner had done as you say above then the comments on here, that I and others have been complaining about, may have had some validity but as he did not say those things and had no part in them then the comments needed to be addressed. Another case of social media Chinese whispers me thinks Social media is a wonderful tool for communication whilst being at the same time a completely rubbish tool for communication.

  15. But the info was provided on other sites not this one, speculation started whilst the owner was actively looking for his boat and may not even of been aware that this forum existed. I don't see why anyone should be maligned without their knowledge on a forum they may not even know about particularly during a time of great stress. And then when they get good news it's felt necessary to denigrate their boat looks. Not the forums finest hour methinks. I'm saying no more other than to say that I was greatly disappointed with the way the thread headed. Eta I don't disagree with what you say if they, or a representitive of theirs comes to this forum. maybe in future what you say above should be raised and explained with an op when they request assistance in this type of search.

  19. Perhaps you could make a new vexatious FOI request to find out how much the rebranding is going to cost. We're already seeing new signs uniforms & vehicles, I don't believe the £60k figure they're bandying about

  22. OK here's my experience. It will smell when you open the lid. What I do is wear a dust mask impregnated with obus oil or vicks vapour rub. The lid may well be stuck firmly on after two years. A large oil filter remover like a boa should release it. After two years the filters will in all probability have disintegrated, so you will not be pulling out individual discs but broken up carbon dust (put it straight into a sealable bag (It will stinK) Get all the old filter material out and the new disks will push in. They do need to be pushed firmly down to get them to fit, Grease the lid seal with vasaline so next time the lid is easier to remove. Finally, you can buy no smell filter cans now which are much easier to replace than the disks ( same thing really but in a plastic container and has silica gel in it to absorb moisture.) Its not difficult but it is a smelly job without the face mask and something on it to mask the smell Good luck ( I hate the job and always do it when my better half and dog are off the boat)

  25. Despite my doubts it really does look like the Marple Flight will reopen on Friday. The lock walls are complete, one lock gate is back in place, two more to do. There's a fair bit of groundwork and stonework still to be done but it won't prevent navigation. Hooray!

  37. Our remaining one is showing wear and tear (rust) so we need to replace. I think they are probably wheelbarrow wheels. Pump up ones, can't spell pneumatic,

  41. The next meeting may be some time away, and if important decisions have been made, then it is right to publicise them, particularly if the meetings are public or attended by others outside the organisation. They can be draft minutes until passed at the next meeting. The next meeting can be a bit late to discover that one's memory does not accord with what was minuted. I was once on a committee where the chairman and secretary would re-write the minutes after the meeting and it was not uncommon to find that decisions taken at the meeting had been reversed. I didn't last long on that committee!

  43. So once again an interesting thread has degenerated into petty point scoring. I thought after the last surge of complaints about this forum there were signs that it had settled down, but it seems that it was wishful thinking on my behalf, and the playground mentality has come back. For goodness sake kep to the topic. Howard

  44. how can it appear to be an ever-increasing scam when this case is proven not to be? do you shout knife crime every time you walk into a kitchen? maybe an apology to the owner of the boat you accused of scamming might be in order?
