  8. Thanks Cheshire-Rose, a 12v air pump is not an option, it is a piece of medical equipment that is calibrated to my sleep apnoea level. Indeed, a washing machine is unlikely on a hire boat which is why I don't think a hire boat is probably an option but I could be flexible on that. I will find a skipper eventually or maybe more than one for a week or two at a time - I keep looking! Much as I would love to pilot the boat myself, being registered blind I don't think other boat owners would be too happy to meet me coming the other way! Where there is a will there is a way and I will succeed in my quest!

  9. You can indeed choose to moor in a marina without a licence. But to do so you would have to find one of the marinas that does not have an agreement with CRT regarding licencing of boats within that marina. If you choose to moor in a marina where there is a requirement to hold a valid CRT licence then that is your choice, so put up and shut up.

  23. Human nature being what it is, there will be a much larger number of boaters who would stay in a marina, not buy a license, but cruise as and when they wanted, taking a chance as to whether they get caught. Exactly as my road diesel fuel analogy demonstrates. George

  26. If you use the sniff test, and it comes up with exhaust fumes then it's the head gasket. If it doesn't but you are gathering water in the sump then it's going to be some'at cracked internally. I suggested a sniff kit because of your question.

  27. It is statutory - only a different body of law. statutory = decided or controlled by law contract law provides a framework in which parties may enter voluntarily into an enforceable agreement that involves the exchange of a consideration. In the particular, CaRT are entitled to control who has access (as in marina entrances) to the canals (subject to some arcane exceptions - see Nigel M for detail!) To make the contract valid, the marina operator has to give CaRT a consideration. Of course, CaRT can choose the level of that payment just as potential marina developers can choose whether to pay it or not. Overall, CaRT have to balance their books and to make charges - where they are permitted to do so - at a level that, in a market context, maximises their total income. Too low a charge and their income falls below what could be achieved at a higher level. Too high a level and the numbers drop off and the total income falls. If someone decided that CaRT should reduce the NAA to a peppercorn (still not zero) then my guess is that they would increase some other charges to compensate. Or, to put it another way, by levying the NAA then CaRT are reducing the licence fee to all other boaters (compared with what it would, have been in the absence of such an income stream). Since no-one is forced to pay the NAA (only if they wish to enter into a contract with CaRT to permit them to operate a marina in the first place) it can hardly be described as an abuse of power since the level of charges is market-driven. As there are new developers continuing to agree to the arrangement then it looks as if they have got it somewhere about right. Mooring charges are also market-driven and if the NAA charges were removed there would be no requirement for the marina operator to reduce mooring charges. Previous discussions on this topic seemed to suggest that mooring fees at marinas which existed prior to this scheme were much the same as elsewhere, taking into account the facilities provided. You are perfectly entitles to campaign for the reduction of NAA charges but to succeed you will need to build a strong case for doing so. At the moment, as I think is obvious, you have very little to offer CaRT to persuade them it would be a good thing - I doubt whether a court would begin to entertain an argument that the charges are illegal.

  29. Ive just googled Tesla cars to see what the price is and a quick look at secondhand ones on Auto trader . I have an idea lets switch to talking about Ferraris and Lambos and Bentleys etc as that's about as real world as Tesla cars are. I would hazard a guess that less than one percent of the population could buy one even if they wanted to. So how long do we think the technology is going to take so I can afford to buy a faultless one like my old Rav 4 which I paid £1250 for eighteen months and 22k miles ago and so far practicaly no other costs and still worth £ 1250?

  31. Indeed, that is one reason why Tesla's cost so much! Lion battery fires can be self-sustaining. Tesla recommend quarrantining the area around one of their burning cars for 48 hours after it has been put out in case it reignites. I can see that going well when lots of EV's are using our motoway networks https://jalopnik.com/watch-volunteer-firefighters-in-austria-extinguish-a-fi-1819665352

  33. This ignores the fact that by far the most likely reasons an alarm will start to sound in an unoccupied boat with everything turned off, is either because it has gone low battery or reached the expiry date of the sensor. This intensively annoying for those who are near the boat, and if they don't hold keys to it can only be resolved by fetching the owners, (maybe from many miles away), or by breaking in to silence it, (which I have known to happen). What is likely to fill an unoccupied boat with CO? Very little, I suggest.

  34. We have just bought a 3 Homefi router. The best deals seem to be available only from a 3 shop, and not offered online. For a monthly contract its £60 for the router and £30 per month for 100Gb. The 12 month contract is £30 per month for 100Gb with no charge for the router. When in use on the boat, the router can be powered direct from 12V, to save using the inverter. We have an external aerial with two connections into the back of the router, and have seen speeds in excess of 50Mb.

  35. One of those short wooden window cleaners ladders would also make a good rescue ladder, the ones that taper towards the top. Just store them on the roof. A Hyab could be mounted on the boat to scoop up MOB's in its bucket.

  39. The problem to charging up electric vehicles is quite obvious when you think about it. What you need is an electric pickup truck with an industrial diesel generator mounted on the back. You would tick all the boxes, able to comply with new electric vehicle laws, able to be charged wherever you park, and capable of doing a 400+mile journey as you can charge whilst travelling. Can't believe you lot didn't spot that idea earlier.

  47. battery packs in houses will just compound the supply problems if we say that the batteries & charger systems are 90% efficient (in that if we put 10kwh of mains into a charger we will get 9kwh out of the batteries later on) putting 10kwh into the batteries on the house gives us 9kwh usable from there, if we then charge a car from the house batteries we end up with 8.1 kwh making it as far as the car batteries having lost 1.9 kwh in charging & battery inefficiencies. if you add in the option of the house or car batteries feeding power back into the grid and then recharging again (possibly multiple times) you can quite quickly reach the point where you are losing more power to charging losses than you are ever actually using

  50. Hi, I've just bought a 40ft narrow boat. I'm going to completely renovate it. Has anyone got any does or Donts. I'm a carpenter by trade. So I'm really looking forward to it. A few questions I need to ask, should I put a water heater in it and central heating? I'm going to get it all re wired is there any special cable I need to use or a different type of fuse board needed?? How thick should the ply boards be for the ceiling and walls?? Any help would be great kind regards John
