Things that amaze me

I’ve already said that I’m surprised at how many Dyson’s are skipped because owners don’t realise the filter is blocked and just need washing

 

I’m again surprised at the number of people with expensive binoculars who don’t realise the lens’s can and should be focussed independently. They may as well have a cheapo  pair properly focused as one lens will probably not be focussed properly depending on their eyesight. My Son in Law works for a Wildlife Trust and has watched wildlife all his life. He didn’t believe me but was amazed when he tried it…….

 

Anybody else with any pearls of wisdom?

We have 2 Dysons, a hand held Animal and a push along ball thingy,  both cast-offs from people with 2 much money and no sense.

I dont even wash the filters, just blow them all and all the vortices, out with an airline.

And on a related note, I'm constantly surprised how many boaters seem to hate CRT with a passion and consider them the lifelong enemy of boaters and spawn of the Devil.

As you say depends on eyesight with the same vision in both eyes as many young people have no need to focus each eye piece.

 

Glasses also come into things.  The last pair I bought the first question the dealer asked was "with or without glasses".  I said with but wanted to know about which method of eye focusing for if I allowed the family to use them.   His first reply was that depends on your optician if he is doing his job properly you won't need to.

I bought a spare filter for our cordless Dyson so it could be used without interruption.  Cleaning our open fireplace hearth in winter means a lot of fine dust  being caught by the filter. Putting the filter in a pint glass with some soapy water and agitating it, soon  results in something that looks like Guiness without the head. Several changes of water are needed before it becomes clear.

Or those that peer at my Lister Petter Alpha and say that it’s bombproof and will go on for ever. They don’t realise that not all Listers were created equal though mine is ok it certainly isn’t bombproof!

Surely it depends upon the individual? Some folk will repair something if it breaks, others see it as an opportunity to bin and buy new.

 

The last Dyson we bought lasted about 18yrs. On it i've changed filters, drive belts, brush bar, and motor. Sadly now the chassis has cracked and is just not worth it to replace (about £60 second hand last time i looked).

I tried a more modern one and it was pants compared to our old one, so we bought a Shark instead.

or look at mine and say "are you sure its a lister ? its doesn't sound like a dumper truck, make enough smoke to hide a tank regiment or chuck oil everywhere "  <Joking> 🙂

 

seriously the number of new posters who come on here 'I've just bought/am about to buy' and have never ever ever even been on a canal boat of any description except for the one they bought/about to buy

me too and I think i've instilled a bit of that into the mutants, problem is they bring all the broken things they can't repair to me and expect that I can work miracles....

me too and I think i've instilled a bit of that into the mutants, problem is they bring all the broken things they can't repair to me and expect that I can work miracles.... 

 

But I’ve spent some 9 months on mine in the last 4 years holiday cruising but have yet to have a go on anybody else’s apart from helping a couple of hire boats turning around.  It took me 2 years to “do up” and after that the first trip I made was the only time I’d ever been on a Narrowboat. The first day I was bored off my trolley and thought I’d made yet another massive mistake. (I’ve built 2 sailing dinghies I”ve only actually sailed in twice!) I went all the way up the Lancaster to Tewitfield on my own over 3 days and got stuck behind a boat doing about 1 mph for quite a while. When I got back I decided I quite liked it and it was like backpacking but with more home comforts and no sore legs & back. When I’m on my travels I’m amazed how quiet the traffic is even on the K&A, Thames and Llangollen.

Same here. Its in the "Another thing that amazes me" category. When I lived on the Thames at Windsor back in the late 70s, my perception and memory is of it being like the M5, really busy with constant traffic passing. Transiting a lock as the only boat was virtually unheard of. But nowadays its like a ghost navigation.

We went from Limehouse to Lechlade last summer and had nearly every lock to ourselves. At one lock we turned up at lunchtime to be told by the lock keeper we were the first through all day and he said it was “eerily quiet” we never had any problem finding a mooring even at Henley during the regatta. Come to think of it it was the same on the tidal Trent a couple of years ago

The Leeds Liverpool was only a little busy around the hirebases near Skipton ( until it was closed due to lock failure one day after we passed through…..)

Amazing that Mr Dyson is still getting away with the poor build quality of his vacuums and other bits and bobs. Walk around many markets and you will find stalls ‘specialising’ in Dyson resales and/or repairs.

They are or where any way useless and terrible build quality. Years ago I ran a pub directly opposite the Dyson factory in Malmesbury. I got lots of their staff in including the then managing director. The biggest department there was so called customer service. They gave up questioning people re their faults and just sent everyone a full set of tools out as the quality was crap and they failed. Anyways the director sent me over a brand new upright and the little cylinder jobby FOC. We used them for a couple of days then stuffed them in a cupboard and went back to the Nilfisk and Henry, both vastly superior. The two Dysons were left in the cupboard when we moved on from that pub.

Because people don't look after them and all a reseller has to do is give it a good clean (including the filters) and it will be as good as new.

 

We have had vacuum cleaners of various makes and models over the years but we always come back to a Dyson. Our current one (Dyson small ball animal) was bought pre pandemic so at least four or five years old (in fact I think it may be just out of it's five year warranty) and it still performs faultlessly.

 

The one we bought previously is relegated to car cleaning and was only changed as it was a bit too heavy to tote up and down the stairs at home and I honestly cannot remember when we bought it it was that long ago. Our daughter used it for about four years of it's life.

 

If you want to buy cr@p go for a gtech. In my experience.

Swap a blocked filter to restore 100% suction, every time.

Can't agree on the Dyson, but I will say my Nilfisk pressure washer is far superior to the two Karcher ones than preceded it.

 

I can't get on with a Henry on anything other than a hard floor which they are great for. Hard work on carpets and rugs though. Lots of the Gites we have stayed in have them.
