  1. I feel deeply uncomfortable about the bullying that has taken place. Lady G may not help her cause but it does feel that there's a feeding frenzy on a vulnerable old lady. If you're happy to do that carry on. It is noticeable that certain posters follow Lady G, ridicule her at every opportunity. Is kindness so difficult,? For crying out loud did that lady kill someone? Did she hurt someone? No she pissed you off, that's all. It'd be good if the feeding frenzy stopped Hey and the lady named T - stop it

  2. I wouldn't worry. No-one will legislate these things away because nobody wants to lose the votes of the majority who think like you. In the meantime kids who live in city centres will carry on dying from air pollution, wars will be fought over dried up water supplies, rivers will be poisoned by runoff from the fields, glaciers will carry on melting and California will just catch fire. None if which matters so long as you can, unlike the millions who came before you on this planet, fly somewhere hot for a fortnight. Doesn't bother me, I've only got a few years left!

  3. Perhaps, just perhaps, wot with climate change and all, we might have to accept that looking to go on a holiday jaunt the other side of the planet is just well, stupid?

  4. This is an example of pure spite and is extremely offensive both in itself and its intention. As an example of what the OP is complaining about, it's perfect, and the poster is one who seizes on any post by LG to have a go. Alan should be ashamed of himself.

  5. There are a few on here, and it's a very few in my opinion, who seize on any post by a particular person and use it as an excuse for a sneer or a snide comment. Subject matter is almost irrelevant. I've got a couple of what I consider the worst offenders where I'm concerned on ignore, plus one whose views I regard as so beyond the pale that, if I see them I feel I have to respond, pointless though it is. As far as the rest of it goes, it rarely reaches anywhere near what I privately regard as even a five on the Dunkley Scale, but it's still upsetting and unnecessary. But one just has to accept that in any social microcosm you are going to get some unpleasant characters and put up with it. Or change your social circle to one where the norms are more to your liking and policed differently.

  7. Two thoughts. The first is I don't know that anybody has suggested to rush out and change your vehicle or take out your stove merely that people need to accept that change is coming and when they replace things consider the environmental impact. The more that do that the sooner things will get better. If everyone say "sod this for a game of soldiers let future generations cope with the problem" then there may not be any future generations. I assume you have no children/ grandchildren or you thing climate change is some conspiracy or other the alternative is you don't care about their health and well being in decades to come. It is IMO the only way change will happen is for people to realise there is a problem and do what they can as they can.

  8. I don't blame you. I wouldn't do it either. About 15 years ago I had Chris W. and Alan (keeping up) come to my boat on separate occasions to help me with electrical issues. I gave them petrol money, sandwiches and tea and was very grateful. In turn I've tried to help others and visited to help take a boat onto the tidal Thames with my portable VHF and visited a couple of people who had epoxying questions. It's a nice thing to do for each other, but unfortunately a few people don't realise forum members are just trying to help and don't help themselves either, so they'll end up being left to their own devices or have to deal with tradespeople who don't know what they're doing and will just make matters worse.

  11. That's because it's very hard not to appear patronising when talking to those who are being deliberately obtuse. Complaining about that is like trying to find something complimentary to say about the IQ of a flat earther, or the new leader of the DUP. Of course the thing about a teacher is that they generally like their pupils to learn stuff and tend to be disappointed when they don't. Me, I find the proudly ignorant add to the entertainment, like the clowns at the circus.

  12. Pete retired when we took over in 2016, my dad is still involved but has taking a step back, he is on here as Hughc. My brother is now a partner in the business, also on here as tomc, we always look forward to welcoming forum members to Langley Mill and are currently developing plans to further improve the yard to be able to grow the business.. Kind regards Dan

  13. Some of the recent postings have made me uncomfortable as well tbh, I appreciate she isn't exactly good at presenting information requested and there is history but some posters do seem to be unable to leave well alone and back off.

  14. If you take a counter view and explain it in a calm, logical and reasonable manner it’s not (normally) bullying, but if you start attacking the person it (normally) is. As my mother would say to me, “it’s better to say nothing than be nasty, so stop”. added - to be clear there is occasional bullying and it’s not necessary.

  15. Well. what a lot of conflicting advice! I've never been on the K&A, but extensive experience of the unpredictable wide locks of the Calder & Hebble and Rochdale singlehanded in a 27ft boat has led me to the conclusion that the best thing you can do is to make sure that anything breakable is stowed properly.

  16. I would never advocate scrapping perfectly good cars or boats with diesels/petrol engines in them. I sold my low hours diesel engine to Pierre in France, my cars now are all electric but the old ones were sold on. We still have a VW t25 camper it's a diesel and I run it on biodiesel, the engine is a modern one I fitted with emissions control equipment fitted. My boat is heated by a Rayburn Royal running on anthracite and well seasoned wood, I also have a bubble stove that runs on biodiesel, I am far from perfect but I try to protect the environment, that is what we should all try to do.

  20. I don't understand the need to charge the engine battery before the domestic bank. Forest of all the engine battery with an engine in fair condition will only be discharge by a few Ah per start. yes high amps but only for under 1 minute. When you link batteries the charge gong to each is inversely proportional to their terminal voltage and thus discharge. The larger the difference the more charge will be applied to that battery. So even though a near fully charged start battery will receive less charge than when direct connected to the charge source it will still get some charge so even if it were only 1 amp over half an hour that will give maybe 20Ah which is more than enough to fully replace the starting discharge. I am convinced that the supposed advantage for charging the engine battery first is a result of non-technical marketeers.

  21. It's not ideally sited for marine, however, due to the overlap with rope and rigging, Beales thrived within the theatre industry, and, at the heart of the west end has been a very handy go to chandlers and ironmongers when shows are being installed and you need that "something" at short notice.

  28. Stalking is a criminal offence and being abusive and obsessive title tatting is a complete pia, there are so many nasty people on here it's beyond unreal. Folks think boating is fun, well I can tell you some people on here need to zip their lips.

  29. No, it's pretty good. There's a lot of leeway, which is better than too tight, and if you report anything you get a reasoned reply as to what action is, or isn't being taken. If you don't bring it to their attention, you can't complain that nothing is done.

  30. We visited Langley Mill last year. The canal is quite urban in places but we had absolutely no problems and the locals were notable for their friendliness. Visitor moorings are very limited in the basin, but Dan gave us a warm welcome and suggested where we could moor for the night without causing an obstacle.

  31. Thing is with this or any forum us that we all get to see other peoples opinions, attitudes and social skills. In the pub down the road (when its open) I naturally choose the bunch up one end of the bar. The noisy lot down the other end could hold all sorts of evil and spiteful opinions but I don't really know what they are talking about - could be football for all I know as they are just passing acquaintances. Both lots probably think its a decent pub. There is no natural filter though on a forum, if this were a physical pub everybody would gravitate to their natural friends and personally I would leave the Hells Angels and sour old gits to their own corner.

  32. I know and I agree, it is just so frustrating that something that is so simple to do is just poo-pood as requiring 'ripping out all the wiring', she really is her own worst enemy and despite some of the horrendous things she has said and the unpleasant conversations I have had with her, I still feel extremely sorry for her. Her problems are self inflicted, but if she would accept help, there are experts out there (both for her mental health and for the boat) who will help. You made a vey kind offer that you would drive many miles to 'have a look' at her boat electrics - did you even get a thank you for the offer, no, all you got was its too expensive, too complicated and I'm not doing it. I live about 12 miles from her present location - am I going to go and sort out her electrics - am I buggery !! She can pay her incompetent electricians £70, and wallow in her own pity.

  36. From "Making a complaint" - September 2020 - ... Once we have received your complaint, we will acknowledge it in writing within five working days. You can normally expect a full written response, from the manager with overall responsibility for the area of your complaint, within 15 working days of this acknowledgement. Our aim is to resolve the complaint to your complete satisfaction at this point. The manager in the case of the complaint below, is Allan Leighton, CRT's chairman of the Board of Trustees who was copied together with Richard Parry, chief executive. Here are the pair of them attempting to hide behind a junior member of staff - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 30/4/2021 Dear Canal & River Trust I am writing to complain that the latest Trustee Annual Report (TAR) filed with The Charity Commission on 22 December 2020 and currently posted on your website differs from that approved by your board on 24 September 2020. The approved TAR was previously posted on your website and filed at Companies House on 12 October 2020. Publication Data relating to heritage (as required under the Defra Grant Agreement) has been altered to hide a substantial drop in condition from previous years. Bearing in mind ... - the communication between your Chair and the Secretary of State relating to this matter. -the notes of the Grant Review meeting on 9 December 2020 attended by your Chief Executive and three other executives (including the executive tasked by the board for filing the TAR with Companies House and the Charity Commission). - the replacement on your website of of the board approved TAR with an unapproved TAR. - the absence of board notification or approval. ... your actions can only be seen as a wilful and intentional act to provide the public and Defra with misleading and inaccurate information. Due to the current Defra Review into your performance, your actions put not only current but also future funding of the waterways into jeopardy due to a section 11.1.5 breach of the Grant Agreement. Equally, if not more important, is the reputational damage that you do to yourselves and charities in general by this action. By altering your TAR, you wish to convince that you are maintaining public benefit against your charitable object 2.2. However, according to the National Association of Boat Owners, you have refused to provide details of listed buildings you have sold over the last eight years. As you are aware, your current attempt to sell the Grade II listed Braunston Stop House has not gone unnoticed! What possible public benefit is derived from selling off buildings you should be protecting and conserving? Retrospectively changing information about how you are providing public benefit leads to public loss of confidence. If a charity does that, how can the public have confidence that any information contained in a TAR ot otherwise provided is accurate? Within the next five working days please provide the following - - Details of any other changes made to your board approved TAR. - Details of how you intent to investigate this complaint bearing in mind the seniority of those involved in altering the TAR. Regards Allan Richards From CRT’s charitable objects as recorded on the Information Commissioners Website - 2.2 TO PROTECT AND CONSERVE FOR PUBLIC BENEFIT SITES, OBJECTS AND BUILDINGS OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL, ARCHITECTURAL, ENGINEERING OR HISTORIC INTEREST ON, IN THE VICINITY OF, OR OTHERWISE ASSOCIATED WITH INLAND WATERWAYSDear Canal & River Trust ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12/05/2021 Dear Mr Richards, Thank you for your further email regarding the below complaint and subsequent FOI request made on the What Do They Know Website. I am writing to confirm that we are dealing with both your Freedom of Information Request and below complaint as one and you will hear back from us shortly. Kind Regards, Hannah Mobberley Information Governance Advisor Legal & Governance Services ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13/05/2021 Dear Canal & River Trust I am concerned about what appears to be a crude attempt by CRT to concatenate this complaint with another matter such that it is answered by a junior member of staff. By copy of this email I am requesting that the Waterways Ombudsman either - Directs you such that the complaint can be properly investigated at a suitable level within the Trust or Considers this complaint herself Regards Allan Richards

  41. I should have mentioned, in case I have not that Kev turned out to be very hands on, he turned up as promised, fitted the car aerial on the rear sliding hatch, it looks great, and works. He sorted all the switches and explained how the power from the rear moves down to the bow batteries, with nearby isolators btw. He explained how to work the radio, and how to use it to charge my phone! I think he realises that I don't do Spotify or dongles etc. He would not send me another invoice, but I insisted he took some cash, and a pint of real ale in a can (Tesco express) nearby.

  42. The soar is not currently high at all, though of course that can change quite quickly. Plan to do hops between more stable mooring places, so Kegworth, zouch, anywhere between bishops meadow lock and pillings flood lock, (Loughborough is a decent town for shops, pubs, laundrette and market on thursday/Saturday. Services at the basin but personally I would then go under chain Bridge and moor on the wide towpath stretch, rather than the basin. From there , there is a cut through to aodi, b&q etc. Nice very peaceful mooring just outside Loughborough, just before miloars Bridge. Above Barrow deep, above Mountsorrel lock (can flood), Sileby has a boatyard and services, but not a place to be in flood. Then above junction lock, another small boatyard and chandlery as you turn off the wreake towards syston. Moorings by watermead are fine , anywhere along that stretch to the weir. Birstall has moorings near the village, though I've heard there have been some hassles there, never experienced a problem myself, pubs shops, takeaways. Then off you head to Leicester with 2 secure mooring options. When the river comes up it soon drops again. Lived on it some 16 years, only ever had one major "eeeek" moment. Beautiful river.

  43. Some people on here get very upset if the wisdom they impart is rejected. As some of it can be downright dangerous, one should always rely ultimately on one's own judgement, as informed by advice. Sometimes the adviser then gets the hump and attacks every post the advisee then makes, which is why it looks like stalking, even if their knowledge is irrelevant to the subject. It is, as you say creepy. It seems to be done mostly by those with a huge (and erroneous) sense of their own importance, often those who have left the canal system completely. For which the rest of us, who just want to get on with each other as we trundle round the ditches, can be truly grateful.

Having suffered "soshulmeedya-abuse" by the not so good lady when she was a mod and put me on the norty step without good reason (thank god we can now see her in her true colours), I managed to get over it and not report her to the feds. Hoist by her own petard, no less. PS - Kansas and Pitlockry (where the hell is that - it only figures in North Carolina) are well rid of her if you ask me. ................. and the good lady defected to that place for a while, but she didn't get a good hearing there either.

  49. Selling anything where you have to interact with the general public shreds your spirit and boils your secretions. Even more so when it involves them insulting you on your own home ground. When they start sucking their teeth and sarcastically disrespecting what you're selling, you as a vendor, your ancestors and future heirs is the time I heartily agree with them. I join in with the criticism, tell them they haven't spotted the worst of it and that my Great, Great, Great Uncle was transported for being violent against potential customers. I then refuse to discuss it further with them, as my conscience wouldn't allow me.
