  3. I suspect it's just an excuse for delay, like when you ring your insurance company and get a message "we are experiencing a high volume of calls...". Basically, it means they can't be bothered to employ enough staff in case it cuts down the size of the director's bonus.

  5. Living aboard a small boat ( 70 by 14 or less ) on the inland waterways with five kids would be my idea of hell. There is NO privacy even on a well built boat. Good luck to you though as some people manage. To give you some idea, we have five kids and nine grandkids. Our 68 foot narrow boat has ONE double bed to ensure they dont want to visit as the floor is uncomfy

  9. It is an option. Depending on the layout of the boat and the pipe diameters and run lengths, the flow rate to a shower might be frustratingly low as a result. I can see an owner in the future deciding to fit a higher pressure water pump to get round this and the cauliflower failing shortly after. If the OP does decide to go this way, then using 22mm, rather than 15mm pipe for as much of the runs from the water tank to the shower as possible would help to minimise pressure drop. Jen

  10. Whether or not people come back as sock puppets is beside the point. Justice demands that when one has done ones time the sentence ends. It's no great problem for the mod responsible for welding the axe to diary the release date and rescind the ban on the due date, or maybe the forum software can make life even easier. We all have to abide by the forum rules. Just implement them fairly. There can be no denial that we need the input of our great leader here. What's the status of the others who suffered under the great cull. (should that be cull of the great?) How many need their accounts unlocking as promised? When will we again hear the wise words of the terror of the Trent, Tony?

  12. Seen today at Curdworth Lock 3. Just how long are they planning on leaving the engine hanging?

  13. Are they? According to who, exactly, other than the manufacturers? Only non-technical people who don't understand the issues say this as far as I can see. Oh, and salesmen. Same thing I suppose... Oh, and people who stupidly bought one

  14. If you replace the glass holding clips screws with stainless steel ones from the start they will never seize and you can replace the glass in a few minutes with just a screwdriver.

  17. Do what @Alan de Enfield does and offer them £80,000 less than asking price ... you'll take the boat as is if they give you thirty grand as well.

  20. The home schooling bit always worries me. Keeping kids away from their peers during childhood is not the real World. When they finish school and go into the workplace their social skills learnt by the vast majority of people during school years will be greatly diminished, we cant cocoon our kids for life.

  22. Alan is right, this is the coil rating. Grade 1 is good for little more than 15 psi, grade 2, 30 psi. Both of these would only normally be indirect cylinders, i.e fed from a header tank. Boat systems are direct, and need to cope with pump pressure, plus a little more for when the water is heated and expanded, hence the fitting of PRV's. The mysterious fitting points may well be for fitting a DHW circulator used to keep the supply pipework up to temperature and eliminate dead legs on large buildings

  25. Thanks guys for all your comments and it seems we are thinking the same way about this boat. I don’t think it’s a South West Durham Steelcraft shell because of the square stern mainly (which I would prefer not to have). It’s just the unusual layout that has encouraged me to look at it. I also will find it hilarious if GHBS has reduced the price because if this discussion. They, along with a number of other brokerages, know me rather well now because I am rather discerning and one has even stopped responding to my enquiries. The fact that I have the readies and am a genuine buyer seems to pass them by. So, I would be delighted if any of you can point me in the right direction of a decent boat 50ft - 58ft AND not at an extortionate price for what it is. When I am asked by a broker what my budget is I say “Whatever I think the boat is worth.” If you know of anyone who is after a shortish boat then I recommend them to view Fidra, a Mel Davis 41ft trad, advertised on Apollo Duck. I have unfortunately worked out I cannot fit on it all the standard liveaboard kit plus my crafts stock for trading. She has good steel, the bilge is dry and pretty well rust free, the fit out is well done AND has the boat has been looked after which makes a refreshing change. It’s more than many other late 1990’s boats but I’ve seen some shocking boats for nearly the same price.

  26. Scrub everything I have just said... I should have looked more closely. What it actually says is.... Max permissable pressure of primary water heater 3.5 bar. I reckon that's saying that the heating coil is good for 3.5 bar, not the cylinder itself. I've reversed back to thinking it is not rated for the pressures put out by many pumps for marine domestic water systems. Sorry to confuse! I cross posted with you, but yes I agree. Again I should have looked more closely. Strictly only good for about 1 bar - so not suitable, I now again say.

  28. Another reason stoves are sealed, with only adjustable air vents to let the air in is to make the stove adjustable. It can allow the stove to be throttled back by restricting the air supply, reducing the fuel consumption and allowing it to stay in overnight. This increases the amount of CO produced, so it mustn't be allowed to leak out anywhere. Jen

  29. That clearly says 3.5 bar. I'd say ignore all those concerns about maximum working pressure, and go ahead and fit. Plumb it as per the diagram on the web page I linked to. It's odd though that at first sight the Telford web-sight seems not to list boat calorifiers.

  33. What is there to discuss, he received a six month ban, it ended. Natural justice requires he be allowed back once he has served his term. One does ones time, it ends, one is free. How would some of you like to be sentenced to serving years in the Thunderboat? There would be weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth. An awful fate. Anyone would think we are in a dictatorship. So no discussions or mealy mouthed twaddle required, just do as promised, you know it's the honourable thing to do. Free The Medlock One!

  39. Yet another example of someone trying to buy a boat thinking boats are a cheap way of living and solving the expenses of more conventional housing. why don't we have a pinned response pointing out the realities of boating life and boat purchase, to avoid the need to repeatedly respond to unrealistic posts. 42. Surely doing that would drain the Derwent into the Ouse? or are you saying it is liable to open between those times, but isn't necessarily open? All I know is that as I was neatly lined up to go into the lock I suddenly had a rush of water coming from the barrage pushing my bow to port whilst the river current was pushing my stern to starboard and all the time I was trying to go dead ahead. In fairness the lockie did apologise and awarded me 10 out of 10 for not hitting anything

  44. I used to work with a guy who was always telling people "If you aren't living on the edge, you are taking up too much space". He got really annoyed with me when I pointed out that, at 22 stone, he weighted twice as much as me, and therefore must have been taking up more space! ?

  45. You have just described about 80% of the people that drag boats around on ropes on canals. Most of them also do it while being yelled at by a 6 foot 16 stone bloke stood on the back of the boat, who is usually giving them unhelpful or plain wrong orders!

  47. It's a very different forum to the one I joined that enabled me to meet in person so many people who I count as friends for life now. We've lost a disproportionate number of female posters as well which is skewing the demographic and making it a very uncomfortable place to be at times, not just in political threads. It is a great shame.

  48. It is very strange how a proportion of posters (and Dan) simply don't get how the presence of offensive/libellous posts on a site makes some of us not want to be associated with the site in the first place. It has nothing to do with reading the unpleasantness, or not. This is partly why so many of the bright and cheerful people who used to come here, no longer do. The whole place takes on a mean-tempered mood and new visitors look around, read a few of the sour and miserable political posts possibly by accident, decide this place is not for them, and leave.

  49. The proliferation of political, or politically inspired threads is annoying, and has made me visit the Forum less often. Change the software so that individual threads can be made invisible please. If possible, control the few members whose offensive/libellous comments cause deep offence. You can probably guess how I have voted in this poll.
