Northern narrowboat painting was influenced by the painting on boats from the Mersey area, so had scrolls and high-quality scumble-work not found in the south. The scumble-work in my short boat cabin, painted in the early 1950s, was very similar to that on SUC narrowboats, judging by photos.

thanks Pluto, its always good to fill blanks in knowledge, i find the northen fleets' history fascinating and end up losing myself for hours in books and on websites..

 

 

In other news....

 

she's going in the water in October!!

 

i have to set a deadline.... it focusses the mind.

 

Caveat....... Although theres alot to do and a few theatre jobs have cropped up so dont hold me to it....🤣🤣

How are you preparing that steel before priming?

with an awful lot of elbow grease, linishing, sanding, and more of that, back to bare steel. The reason we didn't prime it to start with is we wanted the millscale to rust off, which is pretty much doing. still a lot of work to get back to bare steel but if we'd have paid for blasted and primed, it would have been rusty by now due to other work commitments.

 

To add.... the large panel absolutely hasn't been prepped yet!

thanks Bee, i'm quite fond of her too!! the other side has been primed today, the weather isn't great for the rest of the week and i'm moving Hamilton to Southampton next week, but the week after is looking nice so maybe some gloss work might find its way on.....

this'll do for a bit, cabin sides and rear bulkhead undercoated with their first coat, and here's a comparison of paint styles nearly 100 years apart, with this rear bulkhead style only seen on those with drop counters. I guess its nice to bring back old styles not seen for years.....

thanks Graham. not much will change for a while now as we're back to welding to make the submarine more like a boat............

It's hard to really see on the old photo, but looks as if the rudder stock top bush might be flush with the dropped deck, so water drains back out the way it came up?

yes, I believe so, amd i suspect the stern deck drained into the bilge. we're trying to avoid that!

Great progress 😊is it two years since you started welding? What’s left hull wise to prevent launching or is it easier doing more fitting out before launching 
 

Glad to see Norway already tied up at the stern though, are floods expected soon ? 😉

Or maybe it did. ISTR Mr Fincher suggesting that despite Kelvins being excellent NB engines, none was ever used as power for freight narrowboat traffic, back in the day. I could be wrong though.
