I believe Joel originally had a petrol/paraffin E2 so surprisingly small. I’m sure Tom must have one kicking around if you decide that would be more historically appropriate…

I have never heard of a Kelvin Diesel model 8J, K,L  or P in a working narrowboat.   I rather suspect that they were a bit too expensive and in the case of the J,K and L the petrol start more than a bit too inconvenient, in that petrol would have to be supplied to the boaters and also the vapour kept away from the cabin stove.  The need for a magneto will not have helped.

Even if the R2 that was built (one example AFAIK) had been marketed if would have been too big and probably too late for commercial carrying.

When the J engines came out ,c1933, they were designed to be an easy drop in replacement  for the various petrol/ paraffin models. Users at that time would be quite au fait  with petrol starting and the foibles of damp magnetos. Some Kelvin paraffin engines could be started with  paraffin heating lamps and dispensed with petrol altogether, the lamps being under the vapourizer(s). Straight diesels , rather than Semis, were in their infancy  and ,yes, expensive and complicated , the Kelvin system was designed so that the engine could be started easily by hand  at sea in a gale with no electricity available( apart from  in the magneto!)

It is a mystery to me why the LNE Railway chose a Kelvin E2 for their first motor maintenance boat, possibly they were offered it at a bargain price by Kelvin in an attempt to get into the developing motor NB market? Perhaps by that time, late 1920's. the staff on canal work already knew about paraffin engines used on various items of plant. Anyway that E2 lasted about 20years until Joel was worn out  and replaced by a new Joel  in 1948, this time with a Kelvin F2.

Is that the F2 that has now been refitted when the F4 was removed?

The same, with some NOS  replacement parts  from Tom (thanks!) and elsewhere. Non original ~(no electrics in 1948) are the CAV starter and AC5 alternator. Original prop yet to be re-fitted.

Great to see Norway coming back  to life, considering you started with  just a pile of scrap wrought iron😄.
