York - Flooded Again

The Ouse can shift large volumes of water quickly, it's over 30ft deep in places. The problem is it's fed by Pennine spate rivers like the Wharfe, Nidd and Ure, so any rain falling on the hills will be into the city in hours.

It's hard to see the waterfront houses and businesses getting insurance every time they're inundated.

Ok the plus side, this flooding is a 1 in 100 year event so it won't happen again in our lifetimes... So we can just kick back and relax without any concerns that humankind is reaping the results of our own actions.

could happen again next week !!! hundred year event doesn't work like that.......it's like winning the lottery if you win it this week it doesn't alter the odds on you winning it again

You're absolutely right there, I've been playing more than 30 years without any luck, which doesn't mean that it won't be the same this week.

No. It probably won't happen again for a while, but the reality is that it could happen again next week. One in a hundred years is an average, not a law.

If this happens frequently, it would seem that York is overdue for a flood prevention scheme. A bypass, like the one at Maidenhead.

York has flooded regularly since records began - have a pint in the Kings Head for a potted history of water levels there over the years. A flood prevention scheme there is like asking for a snow prevention scheme for the high Alps - rather a tall order.
