matty40s
Unfortunately the Pump at the Foss barrage has failed and the barrage has had to be opened. York is entering uncharted territory as far as water levels go now.
Locksprite
The Ouse can shift large volumes of water quickly, it's over 30ft deep in places. The problem is it's fed by Pennine spate rivers like the Wharfe, Nidd and Ure, so any rain falling on the hills will be into the city in hours. It's hard to see the waterfront houses and businesses getting insurance every time they're inundated.
carpet wallah
It's now about 4ft deeper than shown in the photo
blackrose
Ok the plus side, this flooding is a 1 in 100 year event so it won't happen again in our lifetimes... So we can just kick back and relax without any concerns that humankind is reaping the results of our own actions. Alan de Enfield
Like many other places York sees highest ever water levels. Forecast : "....Up to three inches (80mm) is expected to fall on high ground in northern England on Wednesday. Exposed locations may experience 4.7ins (120mm) of rain". No. It probably won't happen again for a while, but the reality is that it could happen again next week. One in a hundred years is an average, not a law. If this happens frequently, it would seem that York is overdue for a flood prevention scheme. A bypass, like the one at Maidenhead.

York has flooded regularly since records began - have a pint in the Kings Head for a potted history of water levels there over the years. A flood prevention scheme there is like asking for a snow prevention scheme for the high Alps - rather a tall order.
Emerald Fox
I blame the Vikings for building York on a bad spot. Their multistorey car park is also in bad taste.
