  1. One of the problems of lay people reading legal documentation is that they tend to get rather wrapped up in their own comprehension of what the words literally mean whereas within legal circles the application will focus on context and purpose. For all his undoubted knowledge and well constructed arguments I sometimes felt that even Nigel Moore fell into this trap. There is a reason that legal professionals undertake years of training and gaining experience in order to practice. The idea that buying a licence from CRT isn’t entering into a contract is utterly wrong. It clearly meets all the legal principles of forming a contract and if it were not a contract the buyer would have no legal protection. The fact that CRT is a body that is both created by statute and limited in its powers by that statute doesn’t prevent them from freely entering into contracts, since that would prevent them from discharging their statutory duty. A principle of any contract is that the party making an offer can apply conditions of their choosing providing they do not breach statute law and are reasonable. Those conditions don’t have to be enabled by any statute law. You have to remember that the offer made by CRT has both a price and a set of conditions that apply in combination. If you don’t accept the conditions then you are making a counter offer and CRT don’t have to sell you the licence at that price. If you have bought a licence for the price CRT offer then legally you have accepted the T&Cs, doesn’t matter if you think you’ve signed for them or not, they were part of the legally binding offer that you have accepted. Unless of course you can prove agreement to a revised set of terms. The primary sanction for most if not all breaches is correctly a fine. Note that mooring restrictions now come with a threat of a fine for overstaying displayed on the signage. The fact that CRT have chosen to do this says to me that even if they have never executed a penalty in the past they are giving themselves the ability to do so in future. However in the situation of sustained breaches of the Ts & Cs I think CRT could legally terminate a licence for deliberate breach of contract but whether they could refuse to issue a new licence is debatable. They certainly can offer a more restrictive licence and if you continue to breach Ts & Cs you may only get to test whether they are legally bound to continue to offer you a licence after they’ve Section 8’ed your boat. At that stage no matter the outcome - which is 99% certain to favour CRT - you’ve lost anyway.

  3. I occasionally come across a lady with two Scotties when walking Sam. As soon as they see him (or any other dog) they start to bark and make a high pitched yelping sound. Sam is very submissive to other dogs and lies down until they are level with him (Polar opposite of Zeus). Yesterday we met them, they started barking and yelping, Sam lay down, but when the terriers (AKA terrorists) got level he got up and gave the loudest, deepest bark I've ever heard. It certainly shut the terriers up and the woman then accused Sam of scaring her dogs... 🤣😂

  4. Indeed. In my view it is not a proper dog if you have to bend down to stroke it.

  6. It’s because despite changing attitudes, there is still a not-small contingent of british people who are homophobic, and a smaller contingent who are quite happy to voice that and demonstrate it by physical attack. Why not have a heterosexual pride thingy?, part of the answer is that people don’t get verbally abused, beaten up, killed, thrown out of the family home etc because they are heterosexual, but all those things still happen because people are homosexual even in 2022. And that is just in the UK. In other parts of the world, these people can be unemployable, imprisoned or executed by the State. The gay pride thing is about normalising being gay, that it is nothing to be ashamed about, and is a normal subset of humanity, always was and always will be. The aim being to make it less socially acceptable to be ostentatiously homophobic.

  10. Luckily i have only experienced discrimination because of my sexuality once (a long time ago and dealt with by one of my friends - He's six foot five and the issue went away very quickly 😀). Pride is important for many people, perhaps you could be a bit more considerate and less judgemental in your comments.

  11. If you can do that and rent out a spare room to another student that should easily cover a mortgage. Also doesn't getting a boat for your son to live on whilst at uni in 4 years time rather restrict his choice of universities to those with available moorings nearby? I shudder to think of a youngster trying to to juggle living away from home, settling into uni life and managing within cc restrictions. I'm an ex 6th form teacher and I don't underestimate the talents and abilities of young people but I think that would be a big ask.

  16. Or maybe it is not recognised that (say) a 100 volt panel only getting enough sun to produce 50% of its output - 50 volts, so allowing the MPPT to utilise it to charge a 12v battery. My 120 volt panel is often producing 20 volts, 50 volts, 75 volts etc etc Even as low as 15.5 volts it can still put a litttle (0.3 amps) into the battery - they do not always put out their rated voltage A 19 volt panel only getting the same sunlight (50%) will produce 9.5 volts that the MPPT cannot use to charge a 12v battery. This is why it is beneficial, if you have low voltage panels, to wire them in series - 2x 19v panels in series = 38v which in the above poor light (50%) conditions will still produce 19v which the MPPT can use to charge the battery.

  17. This brings back memories. Heres some info for any non armed forces bods. When bulling yer boots do NOT buy Cherry blossom shoe polish as it simply doesnt work, however good you are at the method. Kiwi is best but some other lesser known ones do work.

  19. Just because CRT haven't used byelaws in the past don't mean they won't if it suits them in the future. They've got a court proven hammer in S8 or whatever it is, so why should they change? And the odds are that a court will happily enforce the T&Cs unless the challenger has a boatload of money, and as they generally make sense and cause no problems for anyone not trying to game the system, what's the problem? You have to remember that no-one in this country cares much about the law. Policemen, judges, politicians, CRT and the general public mostly don't have a clue what it is, and even if they think they do, they cheerfully break it when it suits. Unless you murder someone respectable or steal from a celebrity, you'll be fine as long as you do it quietly.

  20. Dame Kelly Holmes came out as being Gay yesterday I believe? Well no surprise to me, when I was Sgt Major in Aldershot she was my Cpl PTI I knew she was gay and knew her civilian girlfriend, at that point it was instant discharge, however did it matter? Not in the slightest I was having her posted to further her career and give her a chance in the Olympics (a great success as it happens). The reality is life is hard enough without making it worse for people, we are only here once so we should enjoy it and not judge ourselves or others, we are thankfully all different

  21. "I know it is pride month or some such nonsense" is a pretty poor choice of words. Let me explain. Next month Birmingham is hosting the Commonwealth Games. If someone wrote "I know it is the Commonwealth Games next month, or some such nonsense", it wouldn't be a problem. People either like sport or they don't, but those who don't like sport, don't generally go around persecuting athletes and athletes are not an oppressed group. LGBT+ people have historically been met with extreme oppression and persecution, and a fair bit of that persists to this day. Pride has been instrumental in tackling that discrimination and is therefore a very important symbol for many LGBT+ people. Deriding is as "nonsense" is therefore likely to be offensive to some people. The same would apply to other events or movements which seek to provide equality for all in society; BLM, for example. LadyG - you may wish to choose your words more carefully in future if you would prefer to avoid causing unintended offence.

  22. But equally, I suspect most folks on a gay site are not looking to crew on a boat either. Seems perfectly reasonable to me to ask on here, which doesn't exclude asking in other places as well.

  26. Looking again at the photo, and Tony's comment about the amount of thread showing on the pipe fitting, you did screw the right end of the fitting into the tap? With the nug off and the olive out it is easy to fit the thing wrong way round.q The fitting has the same thread either end, except that the pipe end has a chamfer round the hole where the pipe goes, so that the between them the nut, which also has an inside chamfer, and the fitting chamfer squeeze the olive onto the pipe. 31. I got the strong impression that he totally understood that which is why he asked for approx dimension as he had no idea and hasn't even got a boat. No boat = no possibility of an accurate answer so why bother asking him for details? If his design doesn't fit it's no skin off our noses is it?

  33. If your budget will stretch a bit, I'd recommend the Victron MPPTs. They can be remotely controlled using your phone with the victron app, and its really easy even for a numpty like me to understand and to use. I use one 50 amp MPPT for the front panels (660 watts) and one for the rear set (750 watts). I think the highest power I've seen so far from the rear set of panels was around 700 watts, but that was in absolutely ideal conditions, and its usually 500-600 watts in summer. I had a Tracer unit previously, and although they are good quality units, the PC software was clunky and difficult for me to work through. They do sell a bluetooth dongle-type thing to link to your phone so you can control the MPPT remotely. I tried it out, but their phone app was hard to get to grips with, when compared to the victron app. If you are singlehanding and at the tiller, and you want to manually stop the solar charging for some reason, you can switch off the MPPTs using your phone (or adjust the charging voltage, etc).

  46. Name me one business in this country which is run by someone who gives a toss about the product. It simply doesn't work like that - you have "managers" who apparently have this particular skill while being unable to do (or understand) any relevant work. And these managers just shuffle round their gravy train from one boardroom to the next, usually after they've made a pig's ear of the last one. And if you replace CRT, that's what will happen, only they'll know even less than the current lot do. Alan Leighton is a prime example of repeated failure leading to better and better paid jobs. The canals are a declining asset, with a badly managed decline, which is possibly slightly better than an efficient one. There won't be enough funding whatever you do, unless you find a brand new demand for the system, and as I've said before, the only one I can think of is to use it for cheap housing, and encourage people to use it as such.

  47. My paper licence is years out of date. I stopped putting them up when CRT started expecting us to print our own. I don't have a printer. CRT have been quite clear that they don't need the licence displayed, just like with tax discs in cars. To the OP - your post reads like you're just trying to stir up division.
