  9. Boats which list, whether they are air cooled or not, or knackered or not, can usually be corrected by judicious moving around of the ballast. I'm not sure why a listing boat should be any noisier than any other, however. Hope that helps....

  11. And as such is hard coupled up to water, waste and power. An essential when it comes to satisfying the environmental health bods that the essentials of cleaning and food preservation within the stated temperature ranges stipulated for refrigeration and freezing can be ensured. I know of at least one 60 footer that was kitted out as a small cheese café with the view of touring the cut and trading "here and there" How idyllic! Then they discovered they couldn't allow punters on board without a shed load of documentation and licence alterations, so they scrubbed that and started selling through a hatch onto the towpath. Then they discovered they couldn't just slice of a piece of cheese, pop it into a bag and hand it over, as this was food preparation and required a commercial kitchen installation. So instead they could only sell prepacked cheese, which has to be prepared externally and costs them more. Then they discovered that their pre-packed cheese had to be stored in catering fridges with a higher accuracy of temperature which involved big generators. Then they discovered life was a lot more complicated than they thought and that just going off and doing it on the back of what friends, forums and bloke down the pub said wasn't a goer. They are still doing it, but not necessarily strictly within the regulations, and consequently have a permanent eye over their shoulder. Not my idea of living the dream.

  12. Experienced boaters mostly use hand signals as they have tried all the other methods and found them not that good! Also, most people go in the canals for the piece and solitude including the word, quietness! There is nothing that gets me annoyed more than someone shouting into a vhf set when there standing within a few feet of me! Just look what others do and you will be fine! Nipper

  17. When I stopped at Macc on the pontoon (where there aren't such notices) last Sunday at about 9am, someone was happily running a very noisy engine. It's right opposite a big block of flats, and the noise bouncing off them back to where I was at the other end of the pontoon was unbearable. In my view it's thoughtless and unacceptable behaviour and no doubt signs will appear on the pontoon soon.

  18. DWell my house went on market and sold in first week via purple bricks but having been told buyer wanted to complete by end of July I boxed up all my stuff and handed a deposit to broker then three weeks later buyer dropped out as his buyer couldn’t get a morgage so luckily the deposit cheque wasn’t banked and my house went back on market. I asked broker to hold the cheque as a show of my intentions to buy but told him I understood the boat would go back on market. Two days ago our original buyer has instructed purple bricks he’s in a position to proceed and our house looks to be sold but for now I’m waiting to be sure before jumping up and down with joy. So I’m keeping busy sawing up my 5 year seasoned wood pile which should give me about 40 sacks of logs and a pile of kindling lol

  21. Charging point statistics (for EVs) here: https://www.zap-map.com/statistics/ I think I read, about a month or two ago, that the number of charging locations has now overtaken the number of petrol stations. The former is growing every month, the latter is (I believe) declining.

  23. The biggest stumbling block is that the O.H. either refuses to take the receiver, or if he/she does doesn't use it . Too much technology - shout / wave / see what happens... Really, boating should be chilled - throw away the gadgets and rely on hand signals and the position of other vessels - they'er the ones that cause problems - not you or your crew....

  26. Definitely the end of having television aerials up of an evening. I suppose an extending pole to raise the tow line on the tractor is a possibility. Drop it again to clear the next bridge. Self driving tractors could be a possibility. Enough smarts to work out where the towpath is, so they don't drive in to the cut. Work out who has priority with an oncoming boat and drop the tow line. Maybe a bit of remote control from the boat, like raise the tow line to clear those moored boats ahead. Some built in intelligence would be an advantage for hire boats with crews completely new to boating. We can all agree on that. Don't think the example in the picture is going to fit under some bridges though. ? Jen

  27. The ongoing £50m support from DEFRA relies on C&RT achieving certain KPI's. One of the measurements includes 'Public Awareness' of the brand - this has been falling below target. Another target is 'numbers of visitors' to the canals. If for an investment of £500k they can achieve their targets and retain the £50 million grant it has been money well spent. If they spent £500k on their museums and failed to achieve their targets , then they would lose the £50 million grant, and everything would be 'up for sale'.

  37. After all the issues people have found, I thought I had better check. I didn't cut mine with sharp scissors when I unwrapped it. The plugs are fitted securely and the marking on the cable is as described. The only thing I could find is that it is longer than described. All perfectly useable, exactly as described in the advert and I think excellent value for money.

  42. Exactly. Very old and probably entirely apocryphal. All SAR in the UK has been civvy for a number of years. There haven’t been SAR divers for many, many years. Pure bullshit. So sorry to spoil the professionally outraged’s fun!
