  2. Oh look another "expert" who sat there watching and, probably, having a giggle at someone else's misfortunes and then posts it on a public forum as much as to say, "I could have done it. This is too easy. Why can't anyone else do it?" I just hope I never have to meet any you "experts".

  4. I was down at the Rugby VMs this afternoon. There's usually something going on and today I was kept entertained watching an old bloke faffing about for a good twenty minutes trying to get his boat alongside the water point. He went back, he went forward, he rammed the bank, he nearly took his wheel house off at one point! And then, after he finally made it, did he use the water point? Nope! Honestly some people!

  6. .... And thirdly, the code is more what you'd call "guidelines" than actual rules.

  7. Sounds like these two would not be able to direct traffic let alone anything else. Folks who have a vague idea of boating would be good, not walking the towpath once a day ... we have enough towpath experts already.

  8. No, pete.i had a sense of humour bypass operation recently. It was a complete success.

  22. I am raising the issue of people who's livelihood (food on the table etc) is based on boating. Those of us who rely on the fuel boats in winter, REALLY don't want them to think it's not worth the effort, and buy a lorry. If C&RT are not there to ensure these waterway heroes can go about their business, what are they there for? People who choose to play with historic boats are a secondary issue in my opinion. Rog

  28. Could be worse. He could be naming and shaming the boats owner for not having CaRT licences on display on each side of the boat, in contravention of the licence conditions. Unless they are to scale licences of course, in which case you would need a macro lens to see them.

  33. You could perfectly well run a 240v hob and oven - provided you have a generator running. So you would need to do all your cooking between the hours of 8am-8pm. A marine generator such as a Fischer Pander could be picked up second hand for a couple grand - but be prepared for "a bit of a project" when it comes to the install. On the other hand, gas is very economical to cook with. One 13kg bottle lasts me in excess of 3 months, and I use the oven most evenings. Your choice of appliance can be quite limited though - there are "boaty" looking little things available though quite expensive. Trying to find domestic appliances to suit can be tricky - obviously they need to be lpg not ng - some have swap-able "jets" others don't, so check before you buy. Most still need a 240v supply - for the ignition and for the ovens internal cooling fan which they all seem to have these days. They also need to have auto shut off in case of flame out. If you have an oven with a digital display, but you regularly turn off your 240v, it will need the clock resetting every time. I found an oven from Belling with a separate grilling compartment and no digital display (Was £317 delivered from gdha). Also a nice black glass hob that was smaller than most so suited my worktop space : https://www.jsi-uk.com/jsi-uk-hgg4110-03a-30cm-glass-gas-front-control-domino-hob-natural-gas-and-lpg Hope that's of some help.

  34. By chance I purchased a pack of tennis balls in Poundland for the Dog. When I got around to looking at them I found they were a solid rubber type construction. I've drilled holes halfway through in 2 of them and they fit over the bars snugly which helps protect both shins and the deck.

  35. My thoughts too. However, given my 10mm baseplate is still 9mm thick after 26 years having been left unpainted, I'm reasonably sure it will outlast my boating career.

  36. anchor should be deployed at front which is higher than stern to minimise risk of stern being pulled under.

  45. Welcome to the Forum Izzy. The problem you are faced with asking that question on this forum is that the peeps who will answer you, see questions like this all the time from people who know very little about canal or river life in London. It seems like there are a couple of threads a week from peeps who want to give up their houses and live on a boat, near London (ie rarely anywhere else). Once we dig down to try and find out what they want so we can formulate better answers, we find they know very little about their end target and most disappear, never to be heard of again, because living on a canal boat in London is challenging and not cheap. Indeed living on a canal boat is challenging and not cheap outside of London, but London brings significantly more problems. If you persevere here, you will get good answers to most questions, usually within minutes of posting. Just learn to ride the banter that goes with it. There is another active thread at the moment asking a very similar question. Be worth having a look at that as well. edit.....post crossed with Lady G

  47. Crumpets are OK for crude assessment but the holes reduce the resolution. Muffins are much better. They are easier to calibrate because of the uniform interior colour and generally even bake. They also have the benefit of a larger crust/crumb ratio. OTOH, They don't absorb as much butter as crumpets can on completion of toaster performance assessment. N

  48. You have obviously never had a dog, and have no idea whatsoever how much people care for them. You are quite right when you say the we don’t know that there is a dog left alone on the boat... and we don’t know that there isn’t. It would be no big deal for someone nearby to go and check. You, it seems, have no problem whatsoever, if it has been left on the boat, to die of starvation, having no idea where it’s best friend has gone, and why. It is almost certainly the case that, if this were to happen, the boatowner would be devastated. As I say - no big deal for someone to go and check. It doesn’t have to be you.
