.... if you allow your boat-builder to advertise himself in the signwriting on your new boat?

This is definitely the new trend I've noticed on this trip to the canals. Mostly it's quite discrete, but some have whole huge panels, and a number which is clearly the serial number of the boat, rather than how many boats the owners have owned, ie "Tardebog boaterbuilders No. 32" rather than "Joe and Freda Boggs, hedgepig No. 2"

I've even seen a few boats that just advertise the last place that re-painted them!

The guy who painted our boat asked if we minded him putting his name on it. We didn't mind at all. He did not ask until one side was complete so we could see what it was going to be like. My feeling was that he will make sure it looks good if he wants his name on it and as he is actually a signwriter he treated our boat as a blank canvas for his art. He discussed with us our wishes and his plans but the end result is his creation and so would any artist not want to sign his work?

Quite: a personal name seems perfectly good, much more so than "Painted by Snodbury Wharf Boatyard" which is the sort of thing I've been seeing.

There's no way I'd allow a boatyard to put their name on my boat, discount or no discount. I've always noticed Kingsground boatbuilders as early offenders with this trend.

I also think it tends to appeal to the more snobbish boaters. I only ever see the more expensive builders' name emblazoned on the sides of narrowboats, never the likes of Liverpool Boats or Springer!

And I never realised Snodbury Wharf Boatyard had started painting boats now....

Not quite true, we passed one last week (up North) which said something like "created by the craftsmen at Aintree Boats". I am pretty sure these ARE the re-incarnation of Liverpool boats!

Another (that I rather liked) was "Lovingly hand painted by Andy Russel" (not related to the above remark, I would not suggest that Mr Russel is at the budget end of boat painting!)

I saw an Andy Russell painted boat with that on too can't remember the name but it had been done very well indeed.

I like his Black Silk finish Gunwale paint too. I used it on mine and it went on a treat and looks good to me.

I see no reason not to black the hull up to the gunwhales. Similar effect surely?!

MtB

I guess so but personally the bit above the rubbing strip looks better painted black rather than with hull blacking.

The Andy Russell paint seems a tough finish too. It is a one pack air dry resin finish (quick drying too) and goes on well with roller or brush. I just think it is better than using hull blacking and also better than using an enamel paint finish.

Hi all

I've sometimes been asked to add the builder's name discreetly, usually low down in the corner of the rear panel or border below. It can be a pain sometimes in that the gunwale stops the hand from working at a usual angle. It may have been the Allen's of Oldbury who were early users of this, I recall it was often done back in the 80s.Whether at the customer's request, or the builder's, I don't know. They were well regarded at the time. At the request of a painter I have also added theirs, never mine....I've never done so yet, just don't like the idea.

Cheers

Dave, can you put "no it's not a Hudson" on mine? whilst you are at it, "no it's not Phils signwriting either".

Braidbar seem to put rather large panels on the boats they build showing who built it and what the build number was. Don't think I would like to have it on my boat, no matter how pleased I was with the build but perhaps the owners are paid handsomely for carrying the advert.

With Copperkins, we don't need to say who built her, most folk recognise Pat Buckles wavy hull and obvious welds :-) With Gamebird, the Sea Otter name only appears inside the post which has the morso control on so can only be seen if you are standing on the stern deck. Again, they are distinctive boats and don't need to advertise.

It has always made me smile that Braidbars all seem to moor at 'Lord Vernons Wharf'

Wonder if they'd be as keen if it was called 'Bleak Street Marina'

Was there, historically, a 'Lord Vernon's Wharf' or is that an invention to try to 'raise the tone' of the place?

I'd never heard of it when I lived in Poynton in the 1960s

Tim

Edit to add - Poynton Colliery Wharf (same place) doesn't really have the same ring to it, does it ;)

Dave, can you put "no it's not a Hudson" on mine?

Though arguably Hudson boats have a better way of stating their provenance. "Registered at Tamworth" is a nice nod back to the old "Registered at Rickmansworth" etc.; people know what it means; and yet it's less in-your-face than "Lovingly hand-crafted by Borg Boatbuilders".

I'd have thought that the bow styling made them instantly recognisable, to be honest, though I agree that the Tamworth touch is in keeping with the old ways.

Carl is right too, those that care do indeed know. Despite having " Norton Canes Boatbuilders" in 7" letters on Resolutes cabin sides, I'm still sometimes sometimes asked

" Lovely boat.....is it a Hudson ? " .....I'll say no more!!

Cheers

As it happens I am absolutely over the moon to have X R and D Boatbuilders name there.. No discount was given.. I just aspire to be a " snobby, shiny, washer josher" loving boater!! Lol

I have had quite a few people say to me " Dave Moore did your sign writing & decoration didnt he?" So I don't really think you need to worry about adding your name! ......oh and Reg at Tamworth seems to specialise in building cartoon versions of proper boats.......
