30minute water point stop

Featured Posts

The longest we have had to wait was an hour.  This was because the hire boat had got stuck in the middle of the flash at Winsford and all RCR & their boatyard could suggest was pump out all your water and see if that lightens enough (so they said).

Personally I top up at almost every unoccupied water point I come to so never take long.

It’s taken me a few years to learn this 😳

especially important now the waterways are a tad busier.

I guess it depends how big your tank is and how fast you empty it -- we only filled up once a week, and still had 300l (30%) left, so moving on for another day or two to the next water point (or the one after that) if it was busy would be no problem.

Many hire boats have tanks half the size and the crew use at least twice the amount of water, which means a fill-up at least every other day -- and if you miss a day, possibly running out. DAMHIK... 😞

Watering up at market Drayton at a double point spot with a hire boat on one , enjoying breakfast on the back , and me on the other one.Boat came in , plenty of room, moored and then demands to know how long we had been there and did we know of the 30minute rule .Eh was my response need water not my fault the pressure is so low it's a trickle and takes about an hour to fill . Hire boaters were stunned by his aggressive standing, Me told him to do one !!!! or else .Filled up in 50minutes left grumpy behind .One of those weeks I am bumping heads with all the knob heeds on the shroppie lol

Blimey, have you started on the sauce early (like me)?!

Totally agree, there is no 30 minute rule. They made it up.

I might nick this idea though, thanks! 🤪

I'm sure I've seen "30 mins only" signs at water points recently -- Stone, perhaps?

Not seen it there myself. But it's actually not a bad idea.

There are, but like @Annie cariad it took us 50mins to fill up (at Stone), so that's how long we moored there.

I suspect they're trying to discourage the idiots who moor at a water point and then go off shopping or run a washing machine or have showers, even if this takes an hour or more and they're not filling up the tank.

Or even those who moor there for a lot longer because it's convenient... 😞

The tap at Braunston (by the Stop House) has a 30 min sign on it. It is also quite a slow tap.

It's irritating when people leave boats on the water tap to go shopping, but a "water tap use only" rule would be much more sensible than a time limit.

Also, people who moor on the water tap and put the hose out even though they are not using it.

It's pretty obvious if they have one of those lay-flat hoses though.  And yes, I have seen it.

I just breasted up and disconnected their hose from the turned-off tap and coupled mine up instead.  Caused a right flurry of curtain twitching but nobody came out to say anything.

I found a No Parking cone which I put on the roof at a waterpoint,  I resisted the temptation to spill c9ntrnts of casette, it was doubly awkward as his cruiser stern was slippery with diesel, i tied up both ends so if he turned up he was trapped. I considered going to the pub for an hour.

I have filled up at Norbury and given up before the (not very big) tank is full before now. Half an hour might just fill the kettle!

I disconnect folks who overstay their welcome, implementing the one hour rule.

they don't like it!

It used to take me 2 evenings to fill the tank at Stonebridge Lock,Tottenham, apparently, it's even slower now!

I timed it last year as I was hanging around that area for the timber yard that backs on to the canal - when the cafe's open, it's faster to cruise up to Alfie's Lock and use the water point there!

Depends on how popular the water point is. A time limit may make sense if it means everyone who needs it can at least get some water, to say 75% full. No time limit could mean some filling up but others getting none.

Yes but...

If its a slow tap and our tank is low it can take a while to fill, but if a hire boat turns up and is in a rush we will invite them alongside and lend them our hose. Hire boats are usually topping up an almosy full tank anyway....(why don't the hire compaines give them a meter, they only cost a bit over £100?????)

Its just much easier to stop at one tap and fill up than having to stop at 2 or 3 for a half hour at each 😀

and then there is Hebden Bridge, stop at the services, put the hose in, go for a few pints in Nightjar, come home and decide to stop there all night 😀

Agree with your point about hirers and meters. Hirers generally have no idea how much water they have used (and some will use much more than others) or the tank capacity, and as a result fill up every day.

Not suggesting that all water points should have a 30-minute limit. But at popular points it would be the same principle as councils putting a 30-minute limit on central high street parking; if you need more time than that for your shopping you have to park somewhere a bit further away that is less popular.
