  2. Taking on fuel on the Seine. after our visit to a shipyard west of Paris.. These guys were fairly robust with their technique: it seemed to be all or nothing. Shortly after the picture was taken our tamk overflowed and the side deck was, briefly, several centimetres deep.In response, a powdered antidote that they carried on board was distributed in quantity to clear up the mess. As their stock of this was considerable it can be assumed such spillages are a regular event.

  7. Some forum members may be interested to hear that the Ever Given is halfway down the Suez Canal proceeding south after leaving Felixstowe a little while ago. Keep your fingers crossed that she makes it this time! Howard

  10. Yup, went one year, came away with the buying process started! But we were in the market so's to speak. The big advantage was, we were able to speak directly to the selling owner, and able to "road test". Which I do not recommend, with the show crowd watching... 10 years on we are still very happy with the boat. Bod

  17. As they are often fitted on canal boats with the boiler at the top of two near vertical pipes with the feed from the header tank at a lower level, my first suspicion would be an air lock in the boiler.

  20. Last time I went I found depressingly few stands had much or anything to do with boats and boating, most could have been at any good county show. The proliferation of general craft, clothes, food etc stands rather than boaty stuff made me feel a bit cheated. A good day out but I'd say fewer than 50% of stands were boat-related.

  24. Most people on this forum appear to have voted, several times, for a type of government that is committed to low taxes and a small state. As a result, the once nationalised waterways have in effect been privatised and government support is diminishing every year with the aim of getting it to zero (unlikely). There is no profit, not even a social profit, in maintaining navigation for a few well off individuals so they can have a couple of weeks playing on a boat. There is a social argument for recreational use for fifty times the number of runners, walkers, fishermen and a green argument for maintaining it for cyclists. You get what you pay for, you've got your boat, you've obviously managed to navigate the Leicester chunk, even if you whinge about it. Bits of the system are three hundred years old. Let's see what state you're in after that time...

  26. This morning 2021, more from Bedford Extra passengers on this rowing boat .... ... meets extra passengers on another rowingboat ... ...with an inevitable turning-over .... ... and encouragement from the bank to "swim it in", which was achieved without any fuss or apparent discomfort. Wet, though. Did wonder about this device from the bank being needed to help someone in the water. Would phoning 999 for the fire service (assuming the charged mobile to hand), then exchanging the number on the sign for the code for the lock, and working out the instructions for the throwline or rescue poll, all happen before the casualty was carried out of reach of the rescue poll

  33. Maybe they always planned a mooring but thought that initially making it a window hole would give less trouble from CRT 😀. I think the Marston Doles top pond is shown as a winding hole in Nicholsons (or somewhere) but is limited to about 50 feet. Maybe its made just for you 😀. Anyway winded at the Cropredy services so now facing uphill so will have to wind again next week. fairly optimistic that the anorexic hole will be just about adequate.

  42. I’ve been as both punter & exhibitor….I wouldn’t bother being either again if I’m honest. Not enough stuff of interest if you’ve been boating a while. And too many tyre kickers who are just having a nice day out to make any business sense as an exhibitor.

  43. I'm not sure I'd go that far 😕 I'm amazed at how many stalls don't actually have anything for sale Rylards paints and hempel i think yes you can chat and look at colour charts but not actually buy owt. Suspect they are there for the trade rather than end users. I find it odd that people who don't go are so fixed in their opinions of the event..... I'd would like to see more stands selling things boaters want but we usually come away with a car full and I'm as tight as a ducks chuff.....

  45. Always a wrench to lose a dog. They become part of the family and give us so much. Condolences to you. The comfort is that you gave him a good life. Personally I do not like to be without a pet so although it is a painful loss when we lose one it has not been too long before we have had another.

  48. To answer your question, I think it is the 'state of mind' of the boater that differs. Supposed "genuine boaters" like boats and boating, and live aboard specifically because they like boats and boating. People who are perceived as not "genuine boaters" are those who bought a boat because they see it as accommodation cheaper than a house or flat, who avoid boating whenever possible, who prefer to stay put in one place in perpetuity, and who only move their boat under duress.

  49. In your position I would be tempted to get a mortgage against the house; enough to buy a decent second hand boat over say 5-10 years, buy the boat, rent the house out (you will need to tell the mortgage company), try the life, pay the mortgage off and make the decision in a few years time when you will have a boat and a house
