It might be interesting to hear what methods of fly control members of the forum use for minimizing the annoyance caused by buzzing insects indoors. Not just flies, but also mosquitoes, clothes moths etc.

I ask as my arm is getting knackered from infective attempts at swatting, and papers are unaesthetic.

I contacted the manufacturer of the window frames on my narrowboat to ask did they have any product to stop flies, mosquito coming into the boat at night when the window hopper is open. They said no but recommend I contact  Cabin Care.   http://www.cabincare.co.uk/boat-flyscreen.php    Cabin Care want £75 per window which is an aluminium frame with mesh that replaces the glass ouch. I am currently making my own.

Has anyone made their own?

The worst place we've found for flies is at the Pumphouse at Titford. Only time we've ever needed to buy flypapers. A pity as otherwise its a mooring I like. How was it for the BCN Challenge finishers? Or was so much beef taken they didn't notice.

We use mosquito netting, cut it to size and with little magnets fix it over windows, if magnets don't work then Velcro stuff stuck round the frame of wooden doors will hold the netting. Its a right faff to do but at least you can have all the doors open on hot nights, works for those really tiny things that collect round the lights. Its not perfect, the dog blunders through the door netting at least twice a night but its better than inhaling poison all the time. (edited for spelling, punctuation, missing words and general nonsense)

This is my attempt to have ventilation whilst keeping the flies and moths out. The glass in my boat is 8mm. I places each piece of glass onto the 8mm ply, drawn round it, cut it out and sand paper the edges. Used a weather proofer/ stained to seal them. The mesh is purchased from B&M and held on with double sided tape and staples.

I have used some of the ply which was cut out to make toggles.

Down side if the bathroom is towpath side and the light is on people can see through the mesh.

Front and rear door. We have net curtains held up on a wire which is pulled to one side or taken down when we close the doors.

Hope this is helpful

How does that happen then?

I have one too and for it to zap, the button on the side has to be pressed in

We have one. Bought it last week and works well from the £1 shop so can you guess how much it was?

That's what we use. Brilliant it of kit. Works a treat. A really satisfying sound as the fly touches the inner conductor and zapppppppp!!!!! We bought 3 on our travels in Europe on the lumpy water boat 10 years ago and still going strong. Still on the same battery as last year.

It annoys Mrs Bob though when she's watching the Telly and it goes zap behind her ear, and it annoys the duck cause he like fresh flies not toasted ones.

There are no flies in our boat.

I think that's from Swallows and Amazons

You're right! Squashed-fly, not dead-fly though.

"Then there were more ordinary stores, a tin of golden syrup, two big pots of marmalade and a great tin of squashed-fly biscuits. Squashed-fly biscuits are those flat biscuits with currants in them, just the thing for explorers."

I bought an ebook version a while back and it has been in the "to be read" queue. I've now bumped it to the top of the list.

I didn't notice any flies at Titford. This might be because there were big thunderstorms about, particularly on the Saturday night and Sunday evening? I'm not sure what effect such extreme weather may have had.

Phil said they started coming about 3 years ago. He thought it coincided with the opening of a new recycling centre down the road.

I'm wondering how long the fly racket batteries last if the button is sellotaped down.

That way as some earlier pointed out, just have it sitting in a vase and eventually the fly will land on it and zap itself, no waving about of the bat necessary.

I saw a boat with mesh instead of glass for the top part of the hopper windows, & a nice slide down mesh for the front doors. They had used cabin care.co.uk. I'm convinced having seen it & it's now on my to do list. It's annoying having to turn the lights out if you want the windows open.
