Popular Post luctor et emergo
So, as most will by now have gathered, I have just sold 'Heart of Gold', after three eventfull years on the canal. It has been a bit of a rollercoaster, with spectacular highs, and some crushing lows, but at the end of the ride, I have no regrets. Well, not many, anyway. When I set of on this adventure, I was hoping that it would be the start of a 'new life', and initially it certainly was. The first year and a half will remain in my memory as hard, but happy. 2012 though, was not a good year. Incesant rain and breakdowns (mechanical and relational), nearly broke the camels proverbial back. But giving up was never on the cards, there is always 'tomorrow'. Winter 2012/2013 saw a resurgance of the spirit, even if in 'slimline' version, and had all the makings of a positive outlook, and bright start of 2013. But, of course, something had to throw a spanner in the works. A cock-up of my HGV renewal meant no licence for close to three months. No driving work really put the icing on the cake. Of course, work and money are only half of your life. Somewhere inbetween you need to fit in the remnants of (a previous) family life. There is only so long that people can be pulled about. Some longer than others. Some harder than others. I am well aware that there are many people out there, who have been dealt a much harder hand than me. But sometimes there comes a point in time, where you have to sit back, and call time. And for me, that time has come. I have not liked the way I have been recently. And it is getting worse. I need to get out of the hectic helter skelter that I have been riding. Driving a truck at night, working a boat during the day, and trying to fit in the demands of children, ex partners and a lover, ... Something has to break. Time to find a new job (done), find a small boat in a quiet corner of the world (working on that), and re-boot the car crash that is my life. Funny really. Everybody knows that it is easy to shoot from the hip 'on-line', pick arguments, and be a general obnoxious pain in the ass. Even if you would never be like that in real life It is actually just as easy to say how you really feel, even if you would never do that in real life. I will miss 'Heart of Gold', she is a good boat. But I know that Matt will look after her.
Zayna
I couldn't read and not post, even though I haven't really got anything worthy to contribute. I hope that you find peace and contentment very soon. Zayna x

Ex- Member
It seems well not be meeting on the water as soon as I thought, such a shame, but best of luck for the future though Luctor, great post!

luctor et emergo
Thanks everybody. I'll stick around, this place is addictive (don't you know it.. Lol). And despite the arguing, bickering, and name calling, you're a good lot. Closest to biking that I know of, but without the violence.
nicknorman
Hi Lucky Some phases of life are inevitably short lived, even though they seem exciting and "the right thing" at the time. I should know, I've done it a couple of times. Just because they are short lived doesn't mean that they were the wrong decision, and rule 1 is to never regret anything you did with your life (well, provided you didn't hurt any small animals etc). Clearly this change is the right thing to do and no loss of self respect because the previous phase is over. At least you are talking about another boat! Is there any reason not to continue to participate on CWDF? I for one would miss your super-grumpiness if you ceased. And lets face it, selling ice cream from a boat was always going to be difficult. Best of luck with your next phase.
MtB
Greenied... And I still like your boat. Feels odd that you bought HEART OF GOLD not me. Maybe I owned her in a parallel universe. I think you'll be back on the cut eventually. MtB

Dyertribe
Sorry that things didn't work out for you and Heart of Gold. Reboot might be a good name for your repacement boat. And as others have said, stick around, we need you in the Unstable Bar! I'm a hirer not an owner and I feel more than welcome here. i love my narrowboat
Best wishes to you in whatever direction life takes you, we have also been through the mill and back, and after 4 years getting our life back on track only to be hit with my son's cancer, life is mean, kind, cruel, great up and down. Life is not fair and always asking 'why me' but it is sent to try us, so chin up and look forward.
dmr
We never did have that beer at the 'shoes! Keep posting here. Those without a boat but a dream of a boat in the future post so much, but those who have lived on a boat and had to stop just don't post anymore Why? Heart of Gold, and making a living as a roving trader, was a very ambitious project. I guess you have to put the kids and life first etc, but they do grow up very quickly. It might all be a lot easier in just a few years, Save as much money as you can, get a boat that needs just a little less work, and do it all again. Or get a cosy boat and a project boat! There are many routes to a life on the cut, but I wish I had done it 25 years sooner, at least you tried. ............Dave
luctor et emergo
Well, my next boat won't be on the canal. The plan is to buy a motor sailer, and spend some time in a coastal harbour/marina. I look forward to the fact that I don't have to move 'for the sake of it', but also that if I want to move, i will have all of the Bristol Channel to play with. And beyond when on holiday. Having said that, I would like to get back on the canal, and do as Cotswoldsman or Dr Bradley, properly travel the system. But that is a dream for later in life. mark99
I remember you working on your boat at Stone 3 years ago. You don't remember me but I moored up returning a hire boat next to you (cocked up the mooring manoeuvre) and had a quick chat re your upcoming venture on the K+A before you disappeared into the boat and carried on working. Good luck - your posts are always worth reading! so keep on here
