What interesting places have you visited on your canal boat?

Featured Posts

The Lancashire Mining Museum kept us entertained for half a day.  Just off the Bridgwater Canal.  Run by enthusiastic volunteers, some of whom were ex miners.

Lots of stuff in central Birmingham. Directly adjacent to the canal are the Sea Life Centre and Legoland.

Many preserved railways near canals - there was a whole thread recently.

Lots of cathedrals, big stately homes etc.

The free music festivals at Upton-on-Severn are excellent and very popular with boaters.

Armley Mill, Leeds. Probably the best place I've ever been to in the boat was Wightwick Manor near Wolverhampton.

I guess it depends what you call interesting but I used to love seeking out abandoned canal infrastructure. Things like.

The original Lemonroyd lock on the Aire & Calder

The original lock at Kegworth, alongside Kegworth Deep Lock,

Side locks on the A&C eg Lemonroyd

Coal Chute on Castleford Cut

Abandoned lock at Whitley on the A&C.

The abandoned lock onto the Trent at Beeston.

Various abandoned locks alongside the existing locks on the GU

Boring I know to some but fascinating to me, and possibly others.

Llangollen has some nice little destinations. I.E. there's a steam train running or you could walk to the horseshoe falls and do a picknick.
We very much enjoyed the short (but upwards) hike to Castell Dinas Brân.

On "the other end" of the Llangollen Canal. There's Snugburys Ice Cream near Nantwich. Well reachable from the Llangollen Canal over the fields (see dashed lines on the map). Nothing spectacular, but when you travel with small (or old) kids....

Sorry, I already mentioned this recently in a another post: From the "southern end" of the Macclesfield Canal you can reach the "folly" Mow Cop. Nice rock formations and great views from the hill:

Both walked up to Mow Cop before arthritis kicked in which rules Dinas Bran out.

Bugsworth Basin and walk up the incline.

Denver Sluice Complex.

Liverpool Docks.

Prickwillow Engine Museum. (If only to see the 1947 flood mark)

Ripon. Minster, Workhouse, Old Court House, Fountains Abbey.

Standedge.

Anglesey Basin.

And I second Mjg's list as I've done all them and passed through three of those locks before disused.

It looks like you're only including ones literally right next to the canal so you're missing a lot very close by, including some very good ones...

It started like that, but am spreading the net a little wider now, updates every day.

Thanks

I particularly like the ‘at a glance view’ of canal side pubs (or at least very close)

we’ve often had people on here asking specifically for canal side,

I’ve noticed you’ve missed highlighting the Red Lion on the Weaver?

You can more the boat outside the Red Lion

It’s a good way to plan a route,

I’ll have a look and see if I can spot any more you aint got around to yet
