Stroudwater1
Found one today, in a local antique shop. Perfect timing for a birthday. It’s a print and the frames seen better days. I don’t think Heartland would approve of a where am I posting of the image😉 Is Nebulae making good headway with artistic licence? It’s lovely to have the ability to remove the flats from the painting or perhaps they weren’t there in 1987?
Lady M
Pretty sure the flats opposite came later than 1987.
Hudds Lad
Lovely picture. Just for fun i've tried a side-by-side comparison with the closest angle i could grab from Google Streetview, perhaps a bit of artistic licence involved but it makes for a better painting IMHO.

Good point, the engine house has moved 😊 Best I could get is this- some beautiful boat or other and its owner photobombing. 🎉😊 Also @PeterScott will suggest the cats missing too from under the bridge.

Be careful what you post in the History & Heritage section. Is it the boat or the skipper that qualifies this picture?
IanM
There seems to be a distinct lack of tow rope.

Derek R.
A recent find in a charity shop. I find the image uncomfortable. It irradiates a feeling of cold, a sense of desolation. At least it evokes an aire, which some do not. This is an original by an unknown artist. The back just has a date in felt tip pen: 26/5/22 It's come out rather fuzzy despite the use of a tripod. Oil on board. My favourite. No signature (though it may be behind the masking). A GWR small pannier tank at a country branch line. It evokes an aire of what I would wish was 'normality'.

Thanks I did not know that, it was an expensive set up so I understand. My guess is that when the painting was done Nebulae was motorised.

Both the top and bottom of the painting has been cropped, presumably to fit the frame. The signature is clearly visible in the bottom right hand corner on the copy I have. This Painting "Evening Service" is one of my favourites 9 hours ago, alan_fincher said: My thoughts exactly... Perhaps it has a hydraulic motor in the rudder... I think your guess is correct, AFAIK it was converted by Balliol Fowden in the late 1970's / early 1980's. The Harmer family was it not? Yes, a hydraulic motor in the ellum, and a steel undercloth conversion. The extended steel back cabin served as the model for Pallas, which was also done at Braunston Boats shortly afterwards (at any rate before 1985) - the upsweep of the stern end of the cabin followed the gunnel line, which made it awkwardly steep and high and, tbh, ugly, there was also too little tumblehome at the back bulkhead, all in the interests of more space inside. I think not. The Harmers had CAPELLA in which Tony fitted a hydraulic drive. @Admiral might be able to confirm.

Whilst I’m not a huge fan of the characterisation of Thelwell his drawing, composition and colour is faultless. He was an absolute master. That picture is a treasure. Did he do anymore canal stuff or is this a one off? Really not into his famous horse and pony stuff even though his great technical skill is obvious. Would love to see a Giles canal themed picture…😀
