  1. It must have landed on its left hand side then. If it had landed on its right hand side the message would have red 'moisture detected in the USB starboard' ?

  2. OOoooooooo YES been very busy cruising and luvin life for a change We have had to come home due to post op on my elbow tomorrow and T has one Wednesday. Lots to do when we get back. What a cracking few days it has been. Launched Friday afternoon which went ok, It did get a few battle scares just from the straps on the lower chines and gunnel and cabin top, but hey ho, he should of protected them but i will get over it with a quick touch up. All ended up a bit later than planned, a mate came to give me a hand with it all which was a great help. Slight panic as when we got to the launch site at Ashton Basin Preston there was nowhere to get the boat in. So we moved aNB over a tads and squeezed it between it and scaff poles sticking up out the water lol. bottom twitching moment but the crane driver did a top job. We spent the night at the basin with take out and copious amounts of Asti love the tarty drink Had a right laugh with Iain and the rest of the loons from the yard till 1am. Then up at 6am for prep work like add 125kg of ballast to the bow locker to sit it better. and shopping for supplies around Preston, forgot a hose pipe for water. Not that i needed more onboard as it has a leak at the back end , I fitted a sealed cabin bulkhead so i know it is leaking under the rear deck some where, not a bloody clue where but the bilge pump kicks in every 4-5 hrs and pumps out maybe 3-4 gallon. But for that its great. We set off Saturday about 2pm to get to Billsboro fro tea time which we did around 5:30pm, i was well waiting for a Strawberry cider but they didnt have it know, hey ho Thatchers will do and a fish mix platter. The next day we met up with my Bro and took hi and his girl friend for a cruise, they are coming back done next weekend and stopping on the caravan park near the home mooring, BBQ time i hope. Well rest was plane sailing to the mooring, oh Barton is amazing, driven past many a time but never knew there was so much to do there and see, the garden centre is the best yet. When we arrived at the mooring it was a wee bit over grown, a friend cut it back but that was back in February i think and now its this. T stated but then got a bush cutter on it in time for next week, i have ordered some new decking for it and a storage shed for this week when we get back up to it. Oh need a petrol mower aswell. So there you go a boring few days on the cut :):):) NOT. i was lying there a few time pinching myself to think its been so long i have been afloat and the boat is done but for cosmetics which you will see in the video when i manage to download them all. burrr with

  9. Sue someone for negligence (anyone really and the more the better) and get someone to set up a "Just Giving" page to raise money for a new phone, dry cleaning, a holiday cottage to help with the stress (or anything really, the more the better). It's the latest thing - it seems that being a numpty is now quite profitable.

  19. You most certainly would not have had this problem this year. My impression is the crowds stayed away in droves. I put it down to gouging car park charges and lack of retailers setting up stalls. I miss the clothes retailers in particular. seemed to me like about 50% of the stalls there this year were chuggers hoping to sign me up to support their cause rather than retailers of anything interesting.

  23. Hi DandV What surprise a comment about Leon from New Zealand hope you enjoyed the UK canal system. In view of your comments and concerns Leon is apparently off to Rehab for the 3 weeks he is in Birmingham when he told me he gave a ? sign and said he was pleased and needed to go. Lets hope it works out for him.

  24. The number on the end cover is enough. The impeller on the Xylem site or the one at Norfolk Marine (above) will fit Check the rotor first, it's the quickest and cheapest solution now we know there are spares Richard Even when it is, you suddenly find the bearing pack is an inch longer...

  26. I did Cromwell to Torksey recently without problems using version 12 - one of the transit lines was obstructed by a bush (white post and pylon, see below). I emailed a few comments (including a suggestion that CRT prune the bush) to charts@theboatingassociation.co.uk and got a quick reply. If you have no luck with your Question above then you could email Jon at that address and ask the question.

  29. The nearest I can think of (off the top of my head) would be PELLEW, built as a Yarwood type 'Admiral Class' motor by Brinklow Boat Services about 15 years ago. These boats were originally built of welded steel, as is PELLEW, and the Parsons Merganser diesel engine fitted to PELLEW is period correct having originally being fitted in the wooden pleasure boat TREES. PELLEW was fitted with a steel cabin conversion when built, but the rest of the boat is about as good as it can be in my opinion. I must confess my favourite representation of a carrying narrow boat is ARUNDEL, built at Stockton Dry Dock in 2003 using OTLEY for its dimensions as it was on dock for structural hull works at the same time. ARUNDEL is a welded steel boat without false rivets, and worked on the Denham aggregate traffic for the first few years after completion

  31. Yup, I use exactly the same tool. It appears to do a great job. Having read the article I certainly agree with his points in principle but as I don’t make a living out of wiring boats I wouldn’t consider spending the sort of money he does on tools. As he writes, find a crimp and tool combination that works and then stick to it. And for heaven’s sake don't solder the crimps.

  33. Cuthound I have been struggling to find info on the web about charging/discharge when full and particularly references around steric hinderance/ depletion of ions around the active sites/diffusion. I wonder in your experience if you have seen anything that could give us a clue to the 'end of charge' data? Obviously at the end of a charge cycle (where the batteries were down at 50% SoC at the start), the last 1% of charge is going to go in very slowly ......as per my long chemistry orientated post above. What though happens on a full battery, discharged to 99% SoC but then recharged? I have been faffing round with my system today trying to get more oooomph out of the the MPPT and saw the following: I have 2 separate BMVs on the Li and LA banks. There was a load of around 12A ....from the fridge compressor, the Inverter, numerous charging laptops and the TV. The sun was putting in circa 9A to 15A (cloudy, sunny, cloudy sunny etc), so the BMV on the Li bank was reading -3A one second and up to +3A the next. The LA BMV was reading up to 1A more out and 1 amp more as the current swung one way then the other. Now maybe the meters are wrong but I would guess not. The inverter is wired between the 2 banks maybe a 1/3 towards the LA's and 2/3 from the Li's. It seems to me therefore that the power is coming from the LA's when the draw exceeds the solar input and then goes back in just as quick when the solar inceases. Turn the solar and the draw off and both banks equalise in seconds. This was all done with the solar giving 13.6V. I also isolated the Li bank to check the LA was truly full and yes, in seconds the solar current had dropped and only 0.1A going into the LA's. Repeated at solar up to 14.1v and got the same. If you go back to my 'chemistry' post and consider what voltage is needed to get a site to do the 'charge' reaction (ie lead sulphate to lead/lead peroxide), it may be you have a graph that starts at 13.0V ish for the '100' sites and rises to 14.5V for the '50' sites. Not a clue what the shape of that curve/ine would look like. The key question for me is what voltage is needed to get the '80' (ie the 80% SoC sites) to move from lead sulphate to lead/lead peroxide). My guess is the first 20% of sites to react on discharge are going to be relatively easy to turn back based on what I have seen.

  34. Ok, just a update on how my system is getting on. A few weeks back on a different thread (which I now cannot find), we were discussing the potential to overcharge my Li's with the 500W of solar if I was near to 100% on the Li's and the sun was shining. The lack of sun early June made test this difficult In the last 2 weeks however, I have been 'pushing' my system to try and get to 100% SoC via the alternator and Solar. Today I have given up. With the solar mppt set at 14.2V Absorption and 13.6V float, as soon as I get over 80% ish SoC ie around 100Ahrs short of full, the mppt is going into float. At that state of charge and putting in 20A from the solar the charge voltage is around 13.7V so the mppt decides it has had enough absorption and reduces the current. Today I am seeing around 5A going in to the batteries and as I am now 70Ahrs short of full, the solar will never get it to 100%. Exactly the same is happening with the alternator and its Sterling AtoB controller. As the charge voltage gets to 13.7V (80% SoC ish), it seems to be cutting back the charge current to 20A so unless I was doing a 10 hour day, I dont think I would get near to full. Below 80% the batteries are taking full whack. My system therefore seems 'perfect' in the charge devices throttling back on getting full therefore never exposing me to overcharging. In the nine weeks we have been out and about, it has never got to the autodisconnect. There is the auto disconnect function if the overall voltage, the cell voltage or the temperature go over set limits.

  43. If you'r still in Selby I'm just down thne road. I more than happy to pick ypu up in my car and take you to Faifax or Jewsons. I don't think the garage near the boatyard sells it. Obviously Jewsons and Fairfax are closwed today but I can get you sorted whenever you want tomorrow (Monday). To be honest Fairfax is your better bet for gas as Jewsons don't have boat sized bottles in stock sometimes. Sending a PM.

  44. Actually, the answer is that the NBTA set up their own schools - home schooling is perfectly legal and the Government is in favour of free schools anyway. But, of course, that would mean them doing something rather than expecting it to be done for them...

  45. I paid a fleeting visit this morning and had a trip round the parade circuit on Badger thanks to @furnessvale . Us railway civil engineers have to look out for each other. Also met @Ray T and almost met Pete Harrison and Cath Fincher (as in I did actually meet them in passing but they had no idea who I was ?). Unfortunately I had to shoot for a family get together back home this evening. One day I’ll manage to spend the whole weekend at the festival. JP
