  5. Video of it on YouTube. Hand start... Voiceover by Jim MacDonald. A good moral in this story. Always cover vertical exhaust stacks with something heavy which will NOT blow off... Otherwise you could easily screw a nice engine from rain damage..

  7. Chickens? Pah! I've posted this before, but it shows what is possible. They had a small cart on the roof which they could harness up to go off to the pub.

  9. Look on the side of the injector pump, if you move the throttle you will see the arm on the side of the pump moves. At idle you the arm stops on the end of a bolt, this is the adjuster. The bolt has a lock nut 10mm from memory, loosen the lock nut and screw the bolt in a tiny bit at a time. The revs will increase. Hold the bolt and re tighten the lock nut. Job done.

  21. I was employed for quite a few years as a Contract Manager. Mainly County Council contracts. This was as the contractor. If I had CRT as the customer my life would have been no where near as stressful. We had financial penalties awarded against us for not meeting the slightest detail in the contract. And it was enforced. Certainly by some evil bitch in Dorset. The one and only time I have considered how much it would be to get someone bumped off. Blasted woman. Heart attack and bypass operation later, I feel much better. CRT contractors seem to get away with 'murder'.

  24. When I owned a Mini and then a Fiat 500 estate I worked at Birdseye Foods and we use to use a spray called "Combat" it was a wonderful water repellent, best I have ever used. I have opened an electric motor starter contractor that has been full of water and blown all three phase fuses, drained the water, sprayed it out with Combat, shut it up and replaced the fuses to restart a production line more than once. normally at 5-30 in the morning ready for a 6 am start

  36. Always in gear and on the move. Obviously not causing a wash but if you are on a deep wide canal with hard banks taking it up 50% more than usual for a while will do it good. Rivers are best, an hour or more fighting the Trent clears the cobwebs beautifully. Get it hot and it will run better for weeks. And never tickover charging batteries, 1500 revs minimum and out of gear on a canal else the bank suffers.

  37. Years ago there was a boat for sale in a yard I moored at. Someone had a pre-purchase survey done which highlighted steel of varying thickness in the hull sides towards the bow, and the baseplate needing welding on the seams underneath. The bow really did look like it had been put together out of whatever was lying around in the yard. The strange thing was it was built by one of the most sought after companies of that time, who were proud of their steelwork and build quality.

  41. When you have days lost because the contractor cant actually staff the operation with agency staff and have nothing in your contract to stop paying them it says lots about the kind of contracts issued.

  45. I have a tip: just move and take the dog with you. Don't overthink it - the more fuss you make about it, the more you'll unsettle the dog. As long as he's with his pack he'll be fine.

  46. I still am amazed that I got into this at all, sheer chance being invited on a holiday (which was a disaster, but I got the bug), found a knackered old tub I could actually afford, two boaty friends, one an engineer and the other a welder, and still, nearly thirty years later, with the same boat and having had a terrific time. Obviously it was better then, or there'd be nowt to grumble about, but it's still amazing out there.

  47. I have to be careful not to poke it through the fire glass, if you'll pardon the phrase. Occasionally it (for those who missed the original post, it's a trombone) gets wedged in between the steps at the back. I also play the fiddle, and in order to avoid getting the bow stuck in the ceiling, you have to hold the bow steady and bend your knees so you sort of bob up and down. After a few months on the boat, you get in the habit of this and get some strange comments when you end up doing it on stage.
