Be aware that some (maybe all?) of the Nationals fitted to road rollers were not the same as the standard 'D' series, less powerful with, I think, a smaller bore.

Ruston Hornsby 3VRH - similar power output to JP3 with same bore/stroke - interesting project but looks like it will need a fair amount of work to provide boat propulsion - suspect it will go cheap though.

" The item may have some signs of cosmetic wear, but is fully operational and functions as intended"

The same seller has a couple of Lister CS singles and a Bamford Z1 for sale. Shame he can't read or spell.

Given it was manufactured ib the USA, getting parts for a Witte may be a tad difficult although there seems to be a following of them there for off grid power generation.

Apologies for going slightly off topic but just came across of this impressive photo of a six cylinder diesel engine crankshaft being dropped into its bed at the MAN factory in Nurnberg, Germany, 1913.

Pulled from this timeline on the development of the diesel (or should that be Akroyd Stuart) engine

Nice little Sabb

Specially nice if its out of a narrow boat is no salt water :)

It seems to be a fairly late one as it has a ring gear not a dynastart. I reckon its out of a canal boat as it has the fnr gearbox not the variable propeller.

I had a 2G once it was a wonderful little unit

Barney boat?

Are you sure it wasn't photographed in the Emerald Isle? There's a leprechaun sat on No 3 big end laugh.png

That's assuming the 'friend' ran it with cooling water attached sad.png

Seems unlikely. And stopping it after ten minutes and putting it all back in the packing case would be consistent with concealing an over-heat seize!

I doubt that 10 minutes with no load, if literally correct, would be enough to cause an overheat seizure, *but*

(a) it appears to have a pneumatic governor

(b ) it appears to have been overhauled in 1950, presumably crated after overhaul.

The diaphragm in the pneumatic governor will almost certainly have failed in the time since 1950, and this can allow overspeeding. There seems to be some 'modern' nylon pipe connecting the governor to the inlet venturi, so somebody has been messing with that.

New(ish) Dorman 8VRM marine engine and gearbox. 105bhp @ 2200 rpm - Classic V8 engine for Dutch barge maybe.

One of three of these built with which Sir Frank Ricardo hoped to impress the Royal Navy. They only turned out about 100 hp AFAIR and were very heavy. The three were built into Sir Franks boat but proved very heavy on fuel so he had one removed and replaced with a more economical four cylinder motor. The RN didn't want to know as you can imagine. Sir F's boat still exists and was under restoration up in Scotland. The owner approached us about breathing life into the installed engines and the fact that the removed engine was still around. Here it is! Of no commercial value but would be of interest in a museum I would have thought. Worth a grand tops!
