Tunnel Bands

Featured Posts

We are docking next week for blacking.

i take the opportunity to repaint the tunnel bands. We have a red one

and a creamy yellow one. Just got the Red out and it’s defunct. It is/was Signal Red. The admiral now says she has never liked the shade of red.

so, question. What is the brand and ‘shade’ of red does anyone prefer. The mind boggles.

Mine was originally painted signal red (my request!), but once on the boat I found this was too orange. It was then changed to Ruby Red (RAL3003) which looks much better -- and turned out to be what Finesse normally use... 😉

(other band is RAL9001 Cream, looks better than white)

Ian would be able to appreciate the tunnel bands on his way in. But looking closer the ropes are out of the way I reckon.

Correct, the rope was dropped onto the raised bit with the dollies on not the deck area that you stand on -- temporarily anyway since we were only going a couple of hundred yards, normally I take if off and put it on a seat or the hatch. Kicking it over the stern is a bad idea, DAMHIK... 😞

Post Office Red

If you want the proper Post Box red, as agreed between Royal Mail and Historic England, it is Royal Mail red, colour ref no. 538 BS381C, available from a number of paint suppliers.

(See https://historicengland.org.uk/images-books/publications/royal-mail-post-boxes/ and download the Policy Statement).

But still in the ark of the tiller, still he looks as if he is hanging on tight

we use Craftmaster when we paint tunnel bands at Langley Mill.......

Lots would say that is the most stable red on the market, they all fade a bit, some more than others.

I think the odds of hitting an underwater obstruction and being thrown overboard by the tiller while going ahead on a two hundred yard stretch of deep canal in Sheffield are probably on a par with those of the boat being struck by a meteorite and sunk... 😉

Don't now what brand the paint is, it's sprayed-on epoxy two-pack so should be durable but may in the end have the same fading problem as many (all?) red paints do.

(red is worst because it absorbs all the blue light which has the highest energy photons, so the pigments degrade faster than other colours)

As it happens I need to buy some red paint over the next few days so I can spruce things up before Easter.
I’ll may just have to settle for what I can get if I can’t order in time. I’m sure the last pot of paint I had was Johnstone’s post Office Red.

What would you recommend for an ‘off’ white? I had Johnstone’s ‘Antique’ white last time.

Now I have no car, I can’t easily pop off to Johnstone’s like I used to. I’ll be changing over to what’s commonly available from yards and wharfs.
I see Toplac about a lot, is that any good?

This ended up in the deep canal basin in Brighouse. Lucky the guy was rescued. The boot was open so we could see it in the channel. 😁

We nearly hit something like that in the 80s, coming out onto the Lee (at Limehouse?) at about 11pm -- I saw something in the water and we swerved to avoid it, as we went past I just managed to make out "Escort 1.3" on the edge of the boot lid... 🙂

I remember joyriders driving a car into Battlebridge Basin one evening. The weirdest thing was the headlights still worked with the car completely submerged resulting in two ghostly glows from below the surface.  Police and fire brigade were soon on the spot and verified there was nobody inside, after which they left. And next morning the disconsolate car owner was seen on the bank wondering what to do next.

We have Symphony Paints Off White, it is quite creamy though.

You can walk to Symphony Paints from the canal around Birmingham, not sure exactly where the best stopping place is though.  Or if you are around Penkridge, Park Gate have a wide choice of paint brands.

yeah the off white I had/have is creamy, which I’m in two minds about.

I keep passing Park Gate and after your earlier  recommendation and I keep meaning to go in but still haven’t.

Even in the 80s, the Lee didn't reach Limehouse.

I had to nudge a car out of the channel somewhere near Bishop Street basin.
