Thanks - not exactly what I wanted to hear, but certainly the sensible option. No point taking unnecessary risks at this point.

I’ll wait it out in Alrewas until things have returned to normal from now — obviously it helps that Alrewas is absolutely gorgeous!

It is interesting to consider whether an elderly person dying at home during flooding died because of the flooding or just died randomly.

People are dying all the time in various different circumstances. It is especially common with old people.

'Derbyshire Constabulary initially said the death was "believed to be related to the flooding" in the area, but later stated only that investigations were "continuing" '

It could be a symptom of mass media hysterical dumbing down.

Make of it what you will

What’s it like river side? can they open the sluices and run it off into the river or do they try to run it off with the natural flow Boston way?

The Trent is probably higher than the Fosdyke at this time.

Torksey has outer gates to keep the Trent out.

Alrewas should not take as long as the Sawley section to re-open. The levels at Great Haywood, Kings Bromley and Drakelow which are relevant to Alrewas, have all topped off now and are slowly dropping. With a fairly dry week forecast, it might be open by next weekend.

On Friday it was touch and go as to whether they'd let us through Harecastle Tunnel in Stoke due to the exceptionally high water level. As we approached (from the south) water was cascading into the canal faster than it was going out. Some of the overflows weren't coping very well and were 'backing up'.

They did let us through but in the low section in the middle of the tunnel we were only an inch or so from the tunnel roof. As a matter of interest does anybody know if the tunnel has ever been closed due to high water levels?

We're now on the Macclesfield Canal, notorious of course for it's low water issues. It probably currently has the highest water level it's had for years!

And I thought he'd chosen a very original name....

But has any on them got a Schilling rudder or Spring line points welded on the Gunwales?
Maybe in his 20 years of boating he’d seen a few of the other “Rallentando” named boats and couldn’t be bothered to over think things for once with choosing a name. Maybe he could of called it “Glockenspiel” as that’s made of metal plates that gets banged a bit?

There are 9 listed on Canal Planner.

As I was perfectly well aware of. I chose an appropriate name that I liked, anyone else is of course entitled to do just the same... 😉

I quite like the name which is a lot better than the Narrow escapes and kingfishers you see around. Not as good as kelpie though which seemed so appropriate for us and enables us to tell folk who don't know, about our beautiful horses. We are always a wee bit surprised when folk ask what the kelpies are. We have had everything from seaweed (kelp), a breed of dog (which it is) a type of fish (kippers) .

There is one called 'Our little nightmare'.

I have 'M.Y. Nightmare' on one side of the life rings which display the name in case of needing to foil the evil plans of any mooring wardens on riverbanks.

Still says the real name on the other side of the boat so the navigation authority can see it from their patrol boats.

I understand it has, in a lot less conditions than this.

We also considered others including "Free Reeds" but decided this was too much of an in-joke... 😉

Why would you expect other people to know about your specialist interest? That would be like me being surprised that you don't know the names of different bonsai trees for example.
