Who killed Kilby lock?

Featured Posts

The CRT notice states

18/07/2023 15:11

Due to the extent of the damage caused at Kilby lock 30, on the Leicester Line, a crane boat is required for further investigations and to begin the required works.

Once the crane boat is on site, we will have a better idea of time scale for how long the repairs will take and we will update the website accordingly on Friday 21st July.

As to whom to blame? is there a picture of the damage? That might give a clue

and who was responsible?

A lack of funding for maintenance?

Did the previous notice say boater damage?

I've turned off alerts for that section so didn't get an email.

It might be no one killed it. Extreme old age and neglect could have finished it off on its own.

Water rats have eaten the gates just be for the vandellisium by someone try to use it possible

Perhaps the same person that did for Birstall lock gates 3 weeks ago which also needed a crane boat to repair. They have slowly worked their way up through Leicester.

You do know that CRT blame everything on mis-use, teenage vandals and anything else they can think of rather than lack of maintenance and regular checks....

Birstall has been waiting to fail(and indeed HAS failed) due to lack of maintenance on paddles, gates and winding gear.

Well our plans look like they have been screwed by this.

We have slowed down on our way to Foxton, and will probably go down tomorrow, and depending on the update on Friday decide to turn round or not.

If it is good news on Kilby, then the limiting factor would be Birstall, but we would not be able to leave Kilby Bridge until we know Birstall is open or else we would not be able to get through Leicester, assuming the secure moorings in Leicester will be full and there is not really anywhere else safe to stop until the Hope and Anchor.  That means Tuesday through Leicester, but we need to be in Birmingham by Saturday, and that seems a push. Thoughts on if you can stop anywhere the Leicester side of Birstall?

Obviously if Kilby is longer then all bets are off and it is turn round and back the way we have come for the second time this year.

We have also been wondering is it was the same boat that broke both locks.

There are half decent moorings below Birstall locks, and both above and below Thurmaston lock.....but no, I would not leave the boat unattended anywhere from above Birstall lock to the city centre moorings.

( there are pontoon moorings at Memory Lane Wharf, but I have no idea of the status of these)

Yes, it was a little tongue in cheek and the Birstall issue was accredited on here to needing to ease the top gates open with the boat as the lock would not fill. Birstall was fixed and we passed through it OK a couple of weeks ago.

I looked up the Memory Lane Moorings as we passed them and they were empty. Apparently they were going to have a mixture of residential mooring and visitor mooring. This was announced pre COVID but appears to be somewhat delayed in implementation.

The update on Kilby lock today, was not good news.  Next update at the end of the month!

Notice Alert

Leicester Line (Grand Union Canal)
Location: Kilby Lock - Leicester Line (Grand Union Canal)
Starts At: Lock 30 - Kilby Lock
Ends At: Lock 30 - Kilby Lock

Monday 17 July 2023 until further notice

Type: Navigation Closure
Reason: Structure failure

Update on 21/07/2023:

We appreciate that there are a small number of boaters currently stuck between the unplanned emergency closures of Kilby Lock and Birstall Lock.

If any of the affected boats require water, there is a water point at Friar's Mill visitor moorings that can be used.

Update on 21/07/2023:

The crane boat is now on site, materials are being delivered and preparations are being made to begin the extensive work required at Kilby Lock next week.

This is a complex job and unfortunately we do not currently have a time scale of when the works will be completed.

We will update the website by the end of July, as soon as we have more updates.

So they still dont say what the problem is, or what they think caused it.

On the other hand, if you park your fully taxed and insured motorhome in a public layby on the A40, how many years can you stay there before a tow truck turns up and takes it away?

I suspect it would be a couple of weeks actually. None of this 'applying to the court' twaddle even if someone lived in it.
