  1. I appreciate that 2.4 has better range but lower speed (and more prone to interference), I need the range which is why I did not choose the 5GHz router. I also appreciate that the router does not prioritise any device (though my wife suspects that I have found such a setting😀) but it really does appear (from first hand experience and testing) that some devices get a lower performance when sharing the WiFi, the challenge is to understand why this is. I've just had five minutes playing now and my phone is faster if there is no other active (but idle) Apple device in the boat, but I need to repeat this tests lots of times to get a statistically significant result. Lebara doing 49/21 on the PC right now.
  2. Three has worked well for us over many years of extensive CC'ing, but can be slow, and very slow at times. At one stage we had 2 three contracts, before the days of unlimited 😀. We now have a winter home on a remote bit of the Rochdale and the only signal there is Vodafone, plus a tiny tiny bit of Three. We have just got a Teltonika dual sim router so are running Three and Vodafone contracts. Two of my wifes gaming spots are the sofa right at the front of the boat, and the back cabin. With the router a midships the wifi just covers the full length of the full length boat, though the speed is just dropping off at these extremes .
  3. I personally use Amazon Blink camera's - they are small battery units, with a controller running from 5v usb, but they do need a wifi connection to access them from a phone....
  4. Only superceded by 5g routers. I have bought a lot of pre-owned 4g, wifi kit from eBay and haven't had a problem yet, even the one advertised as parts only with no PSU worked fine. Tested ue and sold it back on eBay with a PSU for 3 times the price I paid for it
  5. One warning - I agree a very narrow margin but please keep on thread (or at least not stray into politics) or I'll move it. My two pennies - regardless of political persuasion, asking a profit making company to run one of life's basic essentials (potable water, warmth, shelter, food, free WiFi {sorry, my Grandson added the last}) you have a problem.
  6. It could mean that the Smarty sim you have may not work at Crick but is ok up at Yelvertoft as an example. it’s all about trial and error. trying to find the best network that works in most places. then sorting out your needs re the equipment if your working from the boat and need to do video conference calling a high WiFi speed will be needed so as well as the Network and Location in this instance equipment will play a big part. but if you just want to stream a bit of tv or do a bit of social media and emails you won’t need the big download speeds. reasonable equipment and having the correct or the best network sim for the area where your cruising I feel is the vital criteria in that case.
  7. Would something cheap like this work, connected by bluetooth to your phone? Dioche Wireless Web Camera Bluetooth Wireless Cfor OMPuter Camera Webcam Hd 1080P Wireless Wifi Remote Home Chargeable Camera For Desktop Notebook Tv Box (White) https://amzn.eu/d/idASJWi

  9. Many of the phone 4g boosters are not legal in the UK! I use wifi calling in the marina it works on outgoing and incoming calls, not that I get many calls anyway.

  11. Huawei B535 router on O2 switched on today and already a strong wifi signal inside the boat and I haven't yet connected the Poynting aerial. All looking good for this year's cruise.
  12. CCTV cameras can't stop thieves but if you do want to monitor the area around the Boat then putting a 4G foaling camera somewhere is a good solution. I found the cameras from Zopkins are good. When I was moored by a footpath I set the camera to email me when someone walked past. It was very effective but ended up overloading my hotmail account. This camera https://zopkins.com/collections/4g-wifi-farm-yard-cameras/products/5mp-4g-sim-card-camera Needs a 4G data sim. A useful feature is that the camera also creates its own MiFi hotspot. In fact I use my cameras more for the internet connection than the camera ability.
  13. A lot of it isn't extra victron kit though, it's kit that you would buy anyway. You, yourself said you have some victron stuff. Perhaps it already came with the van/boat, and wouldn't have been your first choice if buying new. So, as I mentioned earlier, the addition of a 20 quid raspberry pi, some homebrew cables you have a workable system for not a lot of money, depending on what it is you want to monitor/control. Obviously you can chuck as much money at these things as you like by buying a cerbo for example. One reason I wanted it was not for remote access, but the Bluetooth range in the boat is limited, and as such a more reliable signal is achieved through the WiFi /Internet.
  14. Little loads add up very fast. My compost toilet extractor, wifi router, Fire tablet (on the cabin wall for system monitoring) all add up to 1 amp. This is 24ah a day! LED tape is pretty damn inefficient in terms of watts consumed and lumens output compared to something like an LED torch for a couple of reasons. As it's on a tape, there's no easy way for the LEDs to shed their heat, no heatsink...so they run hot, which in turn reduces their output. The high brightness tape is a lot more inefficient too. Also, so you can cut it to length and use a constant voltage driver, there's loads of current limiting resistors built into the tape, as you probably know, this way of driving LEDs is far less efficient than a constant current driver...but then you wouldn't be able to cut to length.
  15. Yes i have the outdoor camera's. Wifi inside at the bow end and i can have a camera at the stern outside. I cant however put it in the engine bay (dont ask me why i know this!).... they have a small USB powered controller which if signal is poor you could have half way up the boat? they just connect to whatever wifi you have onboard...
  16. Then I cannot explain. When I am at home I can tell whether I'm at the front of the house, the rear of the house or in the front or rear garden. https://www.scienceabc.com/innovation/how-does-turning-on-wifi-improve-the-location-accuracy-of-a-device.html
  17. Just checked my Caravan/Boat internet use its about 65gb a month, whilst browsing I found this deal Three 80GB Data SIM - 5G Business-Grade Data Renewed Monthly until 8th July 2025 - Perfect for Wifi Routers, Tablets & Phones https://amzn.eu/d/b4eIjQl Works out at £3.13 a month. This is an offer and can go back to list price at any time. If I do run over 80gb i have some credit with Smarty left.
  18. Well we may not have much choice in which WiFi provider we use in the future Three’s network ‘unsustainable’ without Vodafone merger, bosses admit (msn.com)
  19. Oh yes, done all these sensible things. Haven't been for an accidental swim in many years but I do know it's rather disorienting, sudden and doesn't taste nice at all. Last time pre-dates everyone carrying a camera ✅ and they helped me out pronto. Also, 12. Have some light on the side. I don't have full coverage yet but the proof of concept is a short length of 12V LED strip, waterproofed onto a block of wood with a little pot magnet. It works a treat, good illumination over several meters and not dazzling... but the switch is under the cratch. I'll move it to wifi and/or PIR at some point. Yep, it's on the list. Boat is older than that.
  20. We have been with Three for many years and have found that their coverage is pretty good across almost all of the system. We simply use a phone and 'hot-spot' off it - no fancy WiFi or Mifi, aerials etc.
  21. I confess that I don't understand all this stuff, despite an engineering background, and for reasons that I just don't understand the iPhone appears to return much worse results than other devices using the same wifi network. We are "out in the sticks" and right on the edge of a Vodafone cell. Using a Teletonika Router and Poynting Xpol. With a Lebara sim I usually see 20+ on my PC though it does slow down sometimes. Have seen over 60. Just done a test right now, PC gives 43 down, 23 up, my iPhone, right next to the PC, gives 18 down, 19 up. The boat behind has just also got a Lebara sim in a very old mifi and has seen 80 down, but mostly a fair bit less. My wife has another iPhone and an iPad and these both give much inferior results to my PC (Microsoft Surface Pro).
  22. Will/Am I not allowed to send smoke signals? I don’t have a mobile phone or any WiFi or gadgets and only communicate with a smoke signal, especially in an emergency. Will it still be ok?
  23. I don't know the relationship between the wattage output of a 12v car stereo and the amps drawn from the batteries, but 1 amp is definitely all my 12v car stereo draws according to my shunt battery monitor. Anyway, like many things in boating equipment fortunately we don't have to stick with one or the other. I also have a rather loud Bluetooth speaker and I find both systems equally useful and versatile. After all, any system is only going to be truly versatile if you have a signal or WiFi in the first place, so I'm just increasing my options.
  24. The tablet will be using Google location to get it's position. Google location uses the position of the WiFi to determine the location and it believes that your WiFi is where it was before you moved. It takes a few days to a week to decide it's moved. I can take my boat out of the marina and it thinks I haven't moved for up to a week.
  25. The V380 IP cameras can be accessed (according to the manual) via an AP link which doesnt need a wifi network. You would need the V380 app on an Apple or Android phone/tablet to view. https://v380-camera.com/blogs/news/v380-ip-camera-installation-manual
