At present i'm sticking with TeamViewer and my mobile phone as it does what I need. I have today enabled the WiFi hotspot on the phone so it will connect to the Sonoff devices I have to switch the mains charger on and to read the overall 230v power consumption of the van when it's on EHU. More to come

Not according to the link I posted above, it says they're the same as Lyca (no Band 20). https://www.simsherpa.com/networks/talk-home-mobile/review-and-guide "Talk Home aren’t as slick as joining EE directly. You don’t get WiFi calling or VoLTE and your SIM won’t connect to EE’s Band 20 4G transmitters, which will affect coverage in rural areas and capacity in urban areas."

Nice looking system, means I would have to learn R-Pi having failed once 😟 I spent ages with mine trying to find a BT to WiFi converter before I had the TeamViewer moment then it all became so obvious.

I don't have this problem with the iPhone as i guess it uses phone signal as well as the boat WiFi to determine location, but my iPad which is WiFi only will always default to somewhere on the Thames in central London despite the fact it's never been there?!? All you want to do is see if there's a pub within walking distance and it's pretending it's the start of Eastenders

I use a Zopkins 4G CCTV camera. It takes a data sim and as well as being a remote viewing camera via phone app it also creates a wifi hotspot which is programmed via an IP and login. Works for me but I have pretty low scale internet use. One advantage is it is IP67 so can be mounted outdoors anywhere and just needs a 12v feed. Of course as it is a wifi the signal will be affected by the boat steelwork so it depends where you use the device inside compared with where the camera/aerial is mounted.

Unable to post on Android

There are times when simply rebooting clears all sorts of glitches and bugs. You may well be right about clearing cache: I'm writing this on an Android phone and it works fine (over domestic wifi). -
Yes it does on my android also but XLD said the wifi was on which made me think that if wifi on the phone is on it might be blocking the hotspot from operating. Samsung - Android

In the house I watch all TV via an Amazon firestick on WiFi. Is this equally achievable on a boat, with a good WiFi set up?
-
You can unscrew the stubby aerials and connect an external one, you may need new adapters though as they will be SMA-Female on the back of the router. You'll need to connect to the router with a laptop/tablet/phone to switch the setting to external aerial too for best results (connect to wifi, type 192.168.1.1 in a browser window). Don't think the Huawei app gives you that much control if memory serves. I have the same router paired with an external Poynting aerial.

The system of determining a phones location from the location of the wifi falls to pieces when the wifi router moves, like it does on a boat. -
It won't improve phone signal but will provide WiFi on your boat. If your phone provider supports WiFi calling then that will improve phone as you can make calls over WiFi.
-
A good router and a mobile SIM contract. Depending on your location you may need a specific provider. Depending on your budget and quality of WiFi required will determine whether you need an expensive router, a cheap mifi or just tether from a phone.

Internet for working with great upload speeds
GUMPY replied to Christie9723's topic in Boat Equipment
It's all about location location location. If you are in a marina with lots of residents then there is very little you can do to improve the speed, the only thing that you can do is to use a network that no one else is using. If your boat is steel then you will need an external antenna unless you put the router on the roof. Best is to use 5ghz WiFi as the 2.4ghz WiFi will be slow. Most routers can be run direct from the boats 12v supply but I would advise something like THIS to regulate the voltage. You may be better sticking to 4g as it will only mean 1 external antenna rather than two and the speed you talk of are easily obtainable in the right location. I run a Huawei 5g CPE pro2 for my internet at home (no landline or fibre) and normal speeds are 250/15 mbs Before that it was a 4g Huawei B818 that used to return 85/18mbs both in the same location Add 4g -
You could perhaps fit a WiFi camera in there. I use Eufy (there are many others) which has an app that alerts me when motion is captured and I can review the recording or get live audio and video on my mobile phone You can get a stand alone camera as well as a system with a hub that will do multiple devices. They also do doorbells, door and window detectors, etc.

Scancom Three Unlimited 5G Data SIM - Preloaded Every Month from now until 8th December 2025 - Perfect For Wifi Routers, Tablets & Phones - Business Grade Data, dual band https://amzn.eu/d/2Vqio1R If you can put up with the "restricted coverage" of 3 and a fair usage limit of 850gb/pcm then it works out at £7pcm. As my Smarty free months have run out I will be getting one.
-
Yeah of course running internet/ WiFi you have to have a sim and there’s a monthly fee attached to that. with the aerial your watching Tv on a big screen and not say just a phone to stream. You may not have a Facebook account or do social media aerial may not be to good so you have the satellite system for your tv needs. you could write up a list of pro’s and con’s for each Aerial Satellite and Internet

I've never seen the Trent so high in Newark
pearley replied to Alan de Enfield's topic in General Boating
Went like that on February 2020 when we were there. Not just the pontoon gangway in the marina but the one to the CRT pontoon at The Kiln. The marina staff removed all the WiFi masts that were bolted to the top of the piles. The piles are marked with Green, Amber and Red. When it gets into the Red all residents are supposed to evacuate their boats. They didn't say where too. -
How much power are you solar panels generating?
robtheplod replied to Hevs's topic in New to Boating?
We have a Cerbo GX and it works very well. Didn't bother also with the display as its easier to use on your phone (via wifi onboard or remotely via the web).... -
When using WiFi calling the phone itself uses the WiFi to talk to the router and not any G at all. The router deals with all the clever stuff and places the call over it's internet connection (probably 4G). If your router's internet connection works when 3G is switched off then wifi calling will work on your phones.

Incremental improvements is a good approach -- so long as you don't need too many of them and end up throwing lots of stuff away, but I expect you can always flog it on eBay... 😉 If your main use is at a fixed mooring a directional antenna would probably be a better option, especially given your location on the Rochdale -- log-periodic ones like the LPDA-92 (there are other cheaper suppliers too) have the highest gain, but are obtrusive. How far away are the nearest masts and what bands do they support? (look at cellmapper) To get WiFi at both ends of the boat with an engine room (and steel bulkheads?) in the middle you may need a mesh/WiFi extender if a single router doesn't give enough coverage, but this is easy to do.

If anything it might be wifi. Almost all boaters will be on mobile The phrase is 'sole or main residence'. If the boaters stays there long enough it risks being deemed a main residence, even if not sole.
-
Because it was a birthday gift and we left them 2 'normal' windlasses, along with everything else they could possibly need (life jackets, furniture, WiFi router & aerial, new boarding plank, pole & hooks, new mattress & bedding, crockery etc etc). We anticipate getting another boat on retirement and I will be glad to have it.

I've a Moonraker. Might well be the tv tuner that's useless, but I've given up trying. I rarely watch tv anyway but as I've got Sky at home I now use Sky Go or the various broadcasters apps off the wifi.

Wifi outdoor aerial for 3 huawei router .
Greg & Jax replied to Greg & Jax's topic in Boat Equipment
Thanks IanD . Great bit of info on the WiFi . -
This works if you have a laptop/tablet that you use separately to the phone. Not, if like me, the phone is the only device I'm using on the boat! The wifi means I can sit in my chair inside the boat and get good internet. Without wifi, the faraday cage effect of the boat completely blocks all mobile signal to my phone when I'm sat down. If anyone is considering this route, remember some mobile contracts don't allow you to use your phone as a hotspot.
