  1. Should be working now. Not sure what caused it to go down, will take another look later.

  5. It is back up but nothing obvious in the logs as to what it's not happy about which doesn't help me prevent it happening again... I have allocated more memory to ElasticSearch and will rebuild the search index and will go from there.

  7. I am not sure that it is right (even if beloved of politicians) to say that the taxpayer has 'saved' money - it has simply spent it. 'Saved' implies getting what you originally wanted but for lower cost. In the case of the canal network, the fundamental issue, as with rather a lot else, is the absence of a basic principle on which to make decisions - does the public want a viable network and on what basis? (ie for boats, walkers, fisherfolk, neighbours with a view) If so, at what price does support change to not support? As is the fashion at the moment, reducing spend whilst alleging waste seems to be acceptable - no mention of the waste associate with ventures such as PPI! Perhaps MP's should be paid on a performance basis . . . with OBR assessing the degree of success of each promise. One of my long term grips is that so many projects (public or private) are justified on a cost saving or cost benefit basis. But when the next idea comes along, well before the predecessor has paid back its cost with savings or benefits, that 'loss' is ignored.

  9. it an interesting argument with wooden boats. I feel she should, if no one takes her on seriously, be transferred to the off site storage facility at Ellesmere Port as an example of a wooden Josher which so few of are extant. the argument of scrap value is an interesting one. we dismantled Beech in 2020 and are still using the wood that was salvageable , and her ironwork has gone on to be repurposed for other things but being kept as a set. at the boatyard we also have a social space called 'The Beech Hut' made from.....you know what......

  11. In fairness to new posters. I can’t be the only one who isn’t on any other forums, Facebook or any other social media. This forum has from time to time been very useful to me but having said that because of my experience here I’m certainly not in a rush to join any further forums. Maybe newcomers expect too much. It takes a while to understand that amongst all the bollocks talked there is some very practical, useful information which would be difficult to find elsewhere. I had a rough ride from some participants when I joined. Some of this I thought was a bit childish and unnecessary but thankfully I stuck with it. its a bit like going to a new local pub. It takes time to get accepted by the locals some of whom you will find aren’t worth bothering with anyway but hopefully you will make a few new friends who will be a big help. One forum for me is enough

  18. Please name the trip boats involved, 😃 I wouldn’t want the ones Im thinking of being tarred with same brush. Brindley Crusiers are ok and the Party boats are ok. Don’t forget it’s still a bit of a commercial waterway there. If you want the ideal spot for the evening go moor up by the Arena, best place for your solar. I find these bits the best places to moor, Very quite in the evening, might be busy if a concert is on but only for a short period and a harmless crowd,

  19. For those who are interested, we got through Brettell Lane. I measured clearance from the water to the channel marker on the towpath side of the bridge at ~78" (6'6"), although the inside of the tunnel isn't at all uniform, so it could vary a few inches in either direction. The water level couldn't have been any higher without going over the towpath, so I don't think it gets tighter than that. Had to take the chimney off to get through, but thankfully the roof boxes, at ~76", got through in situ. There's been a couple on the Staffs and Worcs where the chimney had to come off, but nothing quite as tight as Brettell lane.

  22. Check the plate on the rear of the stove, the one used if the flue exits out of the back, not the top. This is a common fail point, as it is difficult to see or get to. The two retaining lugs can break, and the seal can deteriorate, either could lead to escaping CO if the flue is cool as you describe.

  24. Of the bulb type warning Lamps it is the C1/2" push in black plastic body ones that are most likely to cause problems because they come in tow identical looking types. Those with a removable metal bulb holds are usually fine, but the ones with just a pair of blades on the back use a grain of wheat dolls house bulb and they rarely work for an alternator - would be fine for a six diode machine though, but the OPs is a 9 diode one. Definitely disconnect the D+ cable and turn the ignition on, the bulb should be off. If it is not then you have a short on the wiring.

  31. Broke our hearts last time we saw what was our pride and joy. Even in our worst financial periods we cleaned and brass polished. Painted repaired re skinned the cabin replaced the range , put on steel gunnels and had cloths made. All done by hours of overtime and our unskilled labour. Last time we saw her at Weedon couldnt bring ourselves to look properly at the hideous mess. And its Thaxted. Widgeon was a temporary Willow Wren name, appertaining to a short period of ownership. Less time than we owned her.

  32. People have been shot dead in Knightsbridge. One high profile incident doesn't necessarily have any bearing on the social tensions or general safety of an area.

  34. We recently had a new build (4 years old) on dock. paid a premium for 2 pack. Mill scale wasn't removed. in the end having seen the rest of the 2 pack fall off due to a slight bit of wind which wouldn't register on the Beaufort scale, ripping it off in sheets, we scabbled and brick cleaner-ed the hull to remove all trace of millscale. and started again. I feel its one of the biggest boatbuilding cons the 2 pack dream, unless they can prove its been properly surface prepped it ain't worth the spondoolies to pay for it.

  39. I am going to have another go and this time I hope I get the canal right. It is I believe Grindley Brook on the Welsh Cut below Bridge 28 looking towards the LMR railway bridge on the line between Chester and Whitchurch. The boat is 'Angela', an old butty cut down at the SE Barlow dock at Tamworth. Angela was 32 feet and three berth. The other half became the 'James Brindley', and the third in the fleet at this time, 1956, was the 3/4 berth 'Thomas Telford' made out of a shroppie fly boat sold off by the DIWE for £10 as 'firewood'. My guess is that the 'Telford' is the other berthed boat in the photos. These boats belonged to Canal Cruising of Stone. 'Telford' was fitted with a Morris Vedette petrol engine which ran fast enough to keep the battery charged. Note: battery. There were no banks of leisure batteries in those boats. As David Wyatt recalled, engine breakdowns, constant groundings and their fair share of sinkings made early cruising, and this was still quite early cruising, truly an adventure. I imagine that the Stone boats were temporarily based at Grindley Brook due to a stoppage. As we were passing in Canal Pleasure Craft's Bredon Hill, which I have added as contrast in style, we stopped and had a good look at these boats. They were tough, had plenty of room and were quite well equipped, but my parents preferred the clean lines of the Stourport boats. Two of the pioneer hire companies.

  40. As you have found the surveyors details perhaps you could ask the surveyor to amend the expiry date. Assuming you do have the previous certificate of course.

  45. Most modern approved stoves won't be as controllable as an older squirrel. You are going to need current approvals for a house, I'm guessing. They all have much larger minimum vent openings, to reduce CO formation and improve efficiency, but this makes them harder to stop right down overnight. I've been impressed with the Boatman's neighbours have had, but even Boatman have made changes to meet modern requirements, so how they are now I don't know.

  49. With, obviously, the utmost respect, you aren't adding much to the discussion, are you? Just being an unhelpful prat trying to start a row. I think the OP has enough on his plate without such foolishness. Please feel free to post further irrelevances on the understanding that they'll be treated as they deserve and ignored. Cheers.
