  7. It would be pointless just like all the discussion about boat licence charges. You really should get a life.

  16. Oi! My liver isn't cheap - it's cost me many thousands of pounds to do this much damage to it!

  18. No, their biggest mistake was writing a business plan based on figures they said they would achieve and expenses they said they meet with no idea how to actually do it. The Govenment got KPMG to audit the business plan (prior to handing the BW assets to C&RT) and KPMG confirmed that if the expenditure came in as planned and the costs were controlled as expected then, apart from 2012 & 2013 the business plan showed that C&RT would be viable. C&RT have massaged and falsified the figures ever since, the chickens are now coming home to roost.

  19. “That’s why I’ve only had one boat, but four wives and nine girlfriends in the last 20 years and I’m currently single with eleven Trombones” said Arthur😂👍🎺🎺

  20. I met an American woman in Braunston, travelled all that way for a canal holiday and day one couldn't stand it, spent the rest of the time just walking the towpath. Some people cant stand the motion, my daughter is like that.

  21. The advice to rent one for at least a week is quite important. I met one bloke not long ago struggling singlehanded down a flight who, with his wife, had just bought a boat to live on and were expecting to rent their house out. After two days the wife had found the low roof claustrophobic, got the bus and gone home leaving him to get the boat somewhere and presumably sell it. I've always test run my wives and girlfriends through a boat trip before attempting permanence...

  22. They will only get control of navigation, but if they did get control of the water they would still have an obligation to keep water flowing down the rivers rather than taking too much. If there is not enough water flowing in the rivers then there is nothing to dilute the sewage and industrial waste 😀 Even worse, if they took too much water they would upset the mill owners and they would start smashing up the locks, just like the old days.

  26. Brandon Sluice on the River Lark and Lode End Lock on the Middle Level are both 40-something feet long. But there is not much navigable water beyond either of them, and both are a bit remote from the main canal network, so you aren't missing much by not being able to go through them.

  27. Sorting through a box which remained unopened since we left the Toll House 23 years ago (😏) I came across this photo of Progress in Uxbridge Dock when John Wooley and Duncan Larg replace some side planks. I can't remember the exact date but it must have been mid-60s. Back then it was relatively easy to get 2" oak and iron spikes for the work.

  28. I've only ever had one occasion to closely observe a pump-out being performed and this is exactly what went on. WHAT a palava. It mainly served to confirm my decision back in the early days of boating to only ever have cassette bogs.

  31. We completed it this morning and thought the same, a bit like do you want a kick in the face, a punch in the face or a baseball bat. A bit disappointing they don't recognise that the boat and the licence is owned by a couple and allow for putting details of both owners.

  34. Sat with my better half and did the box ticking this morning. Have to say a lot of the questions felt like Hobson’s Choice and you were just left scrabbling around for the least worst outcome. Anyway, i’m sure it’s all irellevant, they know what they will do and a consultation is only being done so they can say they held one.

  37. it's a PWA so can install on phone but doesn't need to be in a app store. Still in internal dev at the moment but has its own category in the canalplan bug tracker.

  40. The boat will get you out of Leeds, to me that would be paramount!! Good moorings at Woodlesford. No leccy but you are on the cut which is way nicer than a marina/boatyard and easy to get into Leeds if you still work etc.

  46. Sounds like you need a pump out toilet. The holding tank will take probably up less space than four cassettes...

  48. yup, fully understand that.. but i think 1 laptop & 1 small 12v tv will be enough... everything else on gas.. besides mobile phone charging even if it turns out to cost the same to live on a boat compared to bricks & mortar Alan... its the lifestyle change benefits we want...

  49. You can get a PO box (not liked by officialdom eg I think banks for example will refuse you an account) or join up to 'boat mail'(not very much liked by officialdom as they don't know where you are) Boat mail will open your mail, scan it and forward an electronic copy to you via email, or hold it until you are 'passing'. Mail Forwarding Mail Scanning Redirection Free UK Street Address (boatmail.co.uk)

  50. The UK waterways are one of the last microcosms of a world everyone would like to live in. One where everyone waves at eachother and tries to get on. It would be a shame to see it disappear due to a few p takers and our obsession with 'progress' and 'control'.
