  1. It is indeed very sad indeed to hear of Nigel's death. I wasn't even aware that he was unwell. I am glad that we both stuck at it from initial butting of heads on issues upon which we would never agree to the point where we still disagreed about most things, but we had moved past the fact that we disagreed. Our arguing about the detail turned heat into light, and although we continued to disagree, we were both intellectually challenged by the fine detail of the argument. In some cases, we each came to understand that the world wasn't as we would want it, and that in some cases the other was right as to the law. I would have loved to hear his views on the use of the term "houseboat" in the Coronavirus Regulations. He managed to argue well, and with courtesy, and I will very much miss that.

  2. Without naming names or going into specifics, there was a time some 3-4 years back when a couple former members were receiving a lot of abuse on a third party site which was being referenced here. I vaguely recall putting a check/filter in place so that these links were first reviewed by the Moderator team to ensure that the content was not abusive or otherwise inappropriate for a family forum such as this. Most members act in a civil & respectful manner and as such the use of this functionality is extremely limited/virtually non-existent in comparison to other sites, simply because it's not really necessary here. All I'm going to say is that there's absolutely no animosity here and appreciate that the now defunct filter in question may have seemed somewhat inappropriate on this occasion though it was originally set with the best of intentions to help protect those in question at that time.

  6. It would appear that new members get warned for calling someone an "idiot" but it's ok for long standing members to call someone a "pisstaker"? And let's not make this really embarrassing and make it about semantics

  8. That's simply nunya A few grumps got totally the wrong idea, assuming they know everything. And it turns our they are completely unable to admit when they are wrong.

  9. Stop it I'm blushing now. Anyway it's not really that massive, quite pointy though. It's all about technique.

  10. Yesterday, with the wind abated and after a brief chat with @ditchcrawler of this parish, we set off up Tardebigge. We soon caught up with a couple in an ABC hire boat out of Worcester who were a bit on the slow side, but we're doing just fine. Eventually, late in the climb, a boat came down so, with the rest of the locks in their favour, they opened a gap. As we approached the deep top lock we were pleased to see it emptying to finally have one in our favour at the end of an unprecedented 5 hour transit. Who was coming down? The couple in the hire boat! They hadn't meant to go up Tardebigge, so the whole exercise was just to wind at the top and now they were going to do the return leg without pause. Tardebigge twice without a pause? Now that's a holiday they won't forget! ?

  11. Ain’t that the truth? Last night I posted the sad news of the death of a valuable member of the boating community. I did so because CWDF did not appear to have this information but Thunderboat did. It was suggested there that someone should put a post up so that those that wished to on this site could also post their condolences, should they wish to. Well Muggins here offered to do so and I added a link to the Thunderboat thread as there are some very fitting tributes there which, in my opinion were worth reading. That’s when it all went to hell in a handcart. We can squabble all we like but the bottom line is that this animosity between them and us serves no purpose other than to show us all at our worst. So please can I make a suggestion? Stop it! Just stop it!

  12. Yes it may have been best to ignore that example as it isn’t relevant, but in my opinion it was misrepresented so I thought it worthy of challenge as all topics here veer off course and someone else may have read it and thought it factual. I’ve expended far too much emotional energy on this subject this week and I’m sure my response there was partly borne out of the fact I’m knackered. Range versus total distance is important but CRT are the arbiters and they’ve given their view so good luck with the boat search. JP

  14. Update. Made it through. The clearance was around 6" At The lowest point! Thanks all!

  15. Why is this going on for so long. The op only wanted to know his options for parking a car. Surely if he wanted to know about continuous cruising he would have asked.

  16. So I didn't say " Just for further clarity (not that I feel I should have to). I have exchanged emails with CRT and they are more than happy with my plans" As for publishing my "evidence". That has nothing whatsoever to do with you.

  17. Seems like the OP make the terminal mistake of using the two fateful letters in his initial query "CC". From then on, many people showed their deeply held prejudice. Even when it was clearly stated that they were wrong in their preconceptions, they refused to acknowledge it and pipe down. Quite sad really.

  20. @noddyboater has been absolutely wonderful, not just with the time spent down the weedhatch, but also earlier when we met by chance when I moored at Noddy Towers. Seems like a lot of water has run through the canal since then, but it's only two weeks!

  21. I thought that you had a perfectly adequate explanation of what happened from Magpie Patrick, and what will happen next. There is no suggestion of ongoing animosity, just a cock-up in a probably old piece of code. There is nothing to stop except continued discussion of this non-squabble.

  22. But this poster did ask a very specific question to which you made no attempt to answer (presumably because you know nothing of CCing the G&S). Yet you are now annoyed that they didn’t disclose information that is irrelevant to their question and pertinent only to your agenda, as if you have some sort of entitlement to such information. Members still have a right to privacy. JP

  34. Hard to make a case for replacing them if they're still giving you all you need from them John. Taking into account their likely failure mechanism, ie steadily losing capacity over a long period, I'd wait til they start to struggle (unless there's some other pressing need).

  35. When did I say that I intended to meet the CC regs by staying on a 16 mile stretch? You literally make stuff up and you go along.

  38. Excellent application of Nudge theory that. If you don't believe your government when they tell you to evacuate, don't expect them to be able to help you later but do try and make it easier to identify your corpse ...

  39. Be sure to check out the quality of materials used. A friend bought a "cheap" new build, which had a Wilson shell and a bright modern interior. 2 years later he has front doors which won't close because they were made of softwood and the galley needs replacing because the cut down domestic vinyl covered chipboard units and worktop are swelling were the joints to the butler sink have let water get into them. Beware of an "all fur coat and no knickers" interior. Hopefully in your case he is selling the boats cheap to build up a reputation before charging more for them, but not all new bodybuilders do this.

  41. My post stands. Apparently the mod in question is a robot, but it is still pathetically stupid. The reason why my post was fairly strong was because the attempt to report the death of a top bloke and boaters’ champion, was sullied by this stupid bot. If it had been about general chit chat I wouldn’t have bothered.

  43. It bugs me when people work for free in a regular position, as it's basically undercutting someone's wage. Why would a company gainfully employ someone, if they could get someone else to do it for free. I know it's common for it to be retired people looking for something to do / looking for a way to 'give', but I feel there are better ways than in permie positions Then of course this all comes back to the company / charity being underfunded, which comes back to the gov, then to the economy etc etc

  47. It sounds like the discussion which ostensibly began on the subject of corridor width all got a bit heated. I can't help thinking that some of you are suffering and getting a bit frustrated with the lack of internal space on your sewer tubes? Perhaps it's time to upgrade to a proper sized boat with a decent amount of internal space based on human proportions? Then all your rather restrictive corridor width and bed issues will be resolved! ? For those of a highly sensitive nature, I'm just joking.

  48. This has turned into a bit of a muddle. I didn't mention me or the boat because I really just wanted to know about parking on the canal. I got the hump a little when it was implied I'd be gaming the rules when I have no intention of doing so. I intend to cover as much of the country as possible. Cheers ? Thanks for taking the time.
