  4. No No No. There are sharks in the water up here, and bandits on the towpath. It's grim up north, so you are much better sticking with the Cheshire ring or points south. Ignore @dmr with his tales of it being like the K&A but friendlier people and better, cheaper beer. And many choices of places to moor, and shower blocks at the services, and some of the best canal scenery in the country. (Not like we try and dissuade people from hogging our chunk of the canal network )

  6. I have not posted in this thread, I have no horse in the race, don't know Peter, don't really care and in any case, it's none of my business. I am currently having a new bathroom installed in my boat and if the yard had suggested that plasterboard be used they would not have got the work. Not because I have first hand (or even anecdotal) experience of its use on boats, but because of my opinion that it obviously will not work in the long term. Rather like the famous chocolate teapot - few of its denigrators have actual experience of using one but opinion is fairly unanimous. Peter, it is difficult in a big pressure situation - you have the board, not using it means not only the cost of 'wasting' it but the cost and inconvenience of getting it off the boat - but reading your posts, I wouldn't have thought that untried (and honestly, bizarre) innovation was your thing. On balance would it not be safer to go the traditional way rather than search for almost certainly non-existent evidence that a new method will work? Just saying.

  8. I was going to have a rant about people who criticise the boat Safety Scheme, but f*@k it, I can’t be arsed. If your not happy with the way your inspection went, and at the end of the day it’s your safety, then phone the Bss office. Had a phone call from a boater last night asking about ventilation on a friends boat, and how his friend had removed battery from CO alarm because it keeps going off. Im now at my expense driving up to this boat to find out wtf is going on before somebody dies.

  23. Sorry to be negative but basically its gypsum plaster board. I would not use it anywhere on a boat, water or fire resistance does not make it a suitable material for an environment where there is shock loadings and vibration. Ultimately it will return to dust retained by 2 layers of paper.

  30. Whetever you do, don't go on the HNC or the Rochdale. Your boat will run aground and/or sink and you'll be eaten by bridge trolls who will crack open your bones and suck out the marrow, if you don't die in a sub-zero blizzard. There's only tripe black pudding and faggots to eat, the beer has a bigger head than Donald Trump, and the natives will mug you and throw your twitching corpse into the cut instead of saying "hello". All this assumes you can get anywhere because of the massive traffic jams on the cut caused by all those people who've heard otherwise ? P.S. Please ignore any other postings (mine included) saying how lovely it all is, these were all done by identity-stealing hackers who want you to fall into their cunning trap...

  32. of course it can be used on boats. emulsion paint can be used to paint a car. paper can be used to make a tent. you don't ask anyone who says otherwise to prove their case...................... it's just plain obvious. the operative word in each case is SHOULD NOT. I would be wary of an architect's expertise in fitting out a boat. he probably has no more knowledge of boats than the average DIY bloke.

  33. For clarity if it did overheat it would be caused by poor contact between the holder and fuse or running a fuse above its rating for a long time. Acid corrosion could cause a bad fuse to holder connection. Some may throw their hands up in horror but its Saturday today so you are unlikely to get any professional help until Monday at the earliest. If this were my boat I would cut the old fuse holder out of its wires, strip the wires back, twist the conductors together, tape up and try the charger. make sure the cable does not get hot. That way you should get your 12V stuff back and, more to the point, start charging the batteries. That fuse is there to protect the cable from a short circuit between battery and charger, if the charger needs protecting it should have its own fuse. The chances of a short like that over the weekend are probably infinitesimally small but this is only a very temporary measure. Edited to add - I no longer drive into London.

  34. Hi Alan, yes we are at considerable expensive and we are doing that with the multi fuel stove too we are taking no chances whatsoever with safety and compliance it is killing us financially but we will sleep at night knowing that the boat is not a risk to us or anyone else.

  38. Thanks Jennifer. I do have a copy of that book. It is a really interesting book for those looking for detail on the traditional clothing worn by the boating families back in the heydays of carrying but, from memory, does not cover the more recent attire from the period I am looking at, and that is probably because the attire is really not specific to boats in any way, it is the standard attire that any manual worker might wear going about his daily routine What decade was this please?

  39. Yes - 4 or 5 people have suggested it. I linked to several different styles / option / qualities a couple of pages ago. (Post #193) That's all you need - simple and effective and will not bugger up the batteries. I think you will need to build a new battery bank first as the figures given above still show there are problems with batteries 3&4

  42. Love to,but have you seen the prices! There wouldn't be much change from ten grand, taking into account removing the old engine, new gearbox, engine mountings, and aligning. As my old boat didn't cost much more than that,I can't justify that expense. The more I think about the cost, the more I learn to love my noisy, smelly, vibrating BMC.

  44. More recently but still in BW days the ground workers were issued with sweat shirts, trousers and I think polo shirts. Different region's had different colours and Jim Stirling who at that time was the CEO in Scotland nabbed navy blue for his workers. I gather that some areas of down south were a bit jealous ?. I actually still have a few BW Scotland sweat shirts which I used to wear when boating down south. No, I never worked for BW ? haggis

  45. I wish - The River - in my neck of the woods anyway - is only full of boats during the Henley weeks (Rowing, Festival, and trad boat rally), but as you write it's wide enough for everyone. My only irritation is all sorts of folks in whatever type of boat who won't move up on lock laybys....

  48. It seems to me many boats do not have a CO alarm on board There have been many casualties. Goolge easily finds lots of examples . https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=boat+death+carbon+monoxide&source=lnms&tbm=nws&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiTwLzHguTfAhUsUhUIHXc6DnUQ_AUIDigB&biw=1366&bih=649 Let's not be critical by suggesting people are not normal if they a do not yet have a CO alarm . But please do encourage people to have a working CO alarm ot two on their boat by pointing out the dangers . I have just this week ordered and received some new smoke and CO alarms for boat and house use.
