  3. More Coltishall stuff to enjoy http://www.broadlandmemories.co.uk/coltishallpostcards1.html Looks like there was a little waterway behind the lock keeper's cottage which was good for the wherries. Thank you for all your plaudits. There isn't a curtesying gif but take it that I have done so in acknowledgement! How did I find it? I'm an academic and all the research I did and learned to do now translates into finding things. With the internet anything is possible - if you use it well. The original picture had too much 'stuff' - the elegant lady, the mast of the wherry - so I cropped the photograph back to the roof with the gable end features and the chimney and fed that image into google with canal and lock and cottage as supporting words. And up it popped - well, amongst other images. So it was just then a question of finding the chimney! Simples ?

  6. Lol ? ? ? ? ? that’s unfair, instead of jumping in, I do read, and I do ask the forum for advice. i like the job to be done correctly, i keep asking questions, I’m on the forum because I want it right and safe. And I’ve had qualified people work on boats in the past, who hasn’t done a proper professional job. yes I haven’t got a lot of confidence in my self, and I do keep asking. I want to get it right. in the past I’ve had worked checked, and has been approved. if by asking the forum I’m upsetting folks let me know, and I won’t ask no more. i just like to add, the wiring was done correctly, it was my mistake getting the sketch wrong. yes I made a mistake on the 12v but with the forums knowledge I will get it fixed. everything I do I want it right. col

  8. Don't eat over cooked Brussel sprouts and the like before going to bed. Too many calories, PPM too high. You might need a new catalyst or Lambda sensor fitting.

  16. I was lucky I guess... I bought direct from the owner without a survey and only having looked at 2 other boats. I paid cash (well bank transfer) and took the keys - never looked back. Well except that after 12 months I realised that the boat wasn't really suitable to live on full time so I traded up to a longer vessel - but by then had decided that life afloat was for me. I don't think the boat will turn you on or off life afloat but you may find that no matter how much you spend on your first boat you'll learn exactly what you like and don't like about it so that your second will be closer to what you really want .... and then maybe by the 4th or 5th it'll be perfect (until the 6th one comes along)

  17. Except I only rarely charge to 100%. Usually operate in the 30-80% range. As Nick says, you can get to 80% quicker by charging to 14.0v and then stopping charge. We'll just have to see how long these cells last, I guess. I think it's still a learning curve for the manufactures as well if you look at how their recommendations on voltages have changed over the years, but remember, our market sector is insignificant to them, so no research into our usage rarely takes place. I'm quite good at destroying things even without a dremmel! As to deciding when to stop charging, our setup will charge to 100% if left to it's own devices, and then switch to "float", except it monitors current, and tried to keep it as close to 0A as possible (but due to failsafe max voltage, in reality discharges to low 90's% before stabilising which suits us fine). Again, all fully customisable. We also have a switch to force "float" mode at any time, often used to stop charging at 80-90% when on extended cruising. "Float" mode is also activated automatically if temp drops to freezing at the batteries. I think Nick's answered most of your other questions already. If you PM me your email I'll send the files on to you as well (and anyone else who's interested). To be honest, this is all a bit (lot!) out of my comfort zone! Just glad to have something that works well, and is programmable to my exact needs.

  25. No field diodes in the 10 or 11 AC alternators. They use an ignition controlled relay for energisation via a remote regulator. Its machine sensed 9 diode alternators that do that. The only thing I can see that would cause it on the AC range is resistance on the relay power circuit so the regulator sees a lower voltage than battery voltage.

  29. If you have, (as I do) an archive of old photos, it is tempting to want to identify them all, and particularly to want to prove they are one of your forebears. The reality is such collections tend to include quite a number of photos that show people who are simply not family at all - or not from the side of the family you thought they might be. The enquirer knows the lady concerned was born in Hemel Hempstead then firmly linked to the Great Berkhampstead area, particularly Northchurch. Whilst it is possible it is she sat by the River Bure in Coltishall, I think the very strong balance of probability is that it is not. By pure coincidence my own Fathers family is very much from Hertfordshire, and my mothers from Norfolk. If the suitcase of photos bequeathed to me by my mother has pictures that can be traced to Norfolk, then I am inclined to think anyone in them is more likely to belong to my mothers family than my fathers. If this is a member of the family, I'd put money on it not being Mrs Muncey, unless they have any evidence that connects Mrs Muncey with Coltishall.

  31. Maybe you have an 'older generation Dyson'. We bought one of the Dysons (hand held - with an extension tube - cordless from Aldi (last year) and its performance is on a par with the 'full-size' hoover. It picks up all the dog hairs and everything else. It is actually so good that we have taken it home 'for the Winter' and it gets used in preference to the 'big Dyson'. The only downside to it is that the pick-up width is a bit small and it takes ages to do a room (not a problem on the boat)

  32. We had similar a couple of nights ago when it was very still...CO alarm went off...checked stove and all looked ok...opened windows and all seemed ok. I then let the fire go out and took the baffle plate out...there was a fair amount of crud on it plus on further investigation of the flue a layer of cement like substance caused I think from burning man made ovals had fallen off from the inside of the flue pipe and was partly blocking it...I hadn’t really noticed it wasn’t drawing as well but I must say now the pipe is clear again it’s drawing much better....think the moral is to check the flue often even if this means letting the fire go out..I also think the ovals we are burning this year although the same brand as last year have a different make up and produce more binding agent which clogs the flue up.

  33. Ok, this thread is working well to help me map out the way forward. I think I have a reasonable handle on charging and what to do with the alternator now. Let me ask another question. If we go back to my original post and look at the diagram suggested by Eric (Eric of the blog on SLA/LiFePo hybrid systems), the hybrid system is designed so the SLA stops any technical issues if the Lithium bank is disconnected in an emergency. I am attracted to this system as all I need to do is put a lithium circuit in place (with auto disconnect on high/low voltage) and a manual disconnect ...and move the BMV712 to the Li circuit. I am wondering how many SLAs to leave in place ...ie I could leave all 6 *110Ahr in place inititally. Under normal operation how would this work. Let's start in the evening in January with the Li and SLA's with no load and no charge....with the Li's at 75%. Voltage on the Li bank will be 13.0V+ so providing a trickle charge to the SLA which will have some 'internal' discharge (ie the SLA bank is fully charged and would be at 12.7V at rest). I now turn on the inverter and with the fridge and TV on etc, I am taking 10A. I assume from what Eric said that would all come out of the Lithium bank as the voltage drop in the bank is minimal (assume say 360Ahr of LiFePo capacity). I operate overnight like this so by morning the Li's have gone down from 75% SoC to say 40%. At 40% SoC, the lithium voltage is still over 13.0V (????) so the SLA's are still at 100%. Morning comes, I start the engine and the Li's charge back up to a target of 80% . Charge is then switched off and the SLA's are still at 100%. This sounds like the SLAs will always be full. Yes they will take power out of the Li's to cover their self discharge but in principle, there will be little cycling in the SLA's. The only time the SLA's would go down in SoC is if the Li's drop to a voltage <12.8V but by that time I would have taken action. Is this thinking correct? If so I would be tempted into just leaving my SLA's in place and piggy backing the Li system - maybe putting my old BMV501 monitor on the total system and the BMV712 on the Li only circuit

  34. Never had a hat on a solid fuel stove chimney on a boat, never seen the point. I do cap the flue at roof level when leaving the boat. Only time our CO alarms went off was when the case of the 20year old stove cracked. And again it wasn't the one nearest to the stove but the one in the sleeping area.

  35. I bought a moving cowl (from a boat based chimney supplier) and find it very useful. It fits both chimneys, the solid fuel stove in the back cabin and the Lockgate diesel in the saloon. The Lockgate is quite vulnerable to wind in the first hour after lighting, the cowl has cured this.

  39. A quick report on progress with the Moomin-BMS. State-of-charge based on coulomb-counting is now functional, as is charge and discharge disconnect. The 3.5Ah test battery had its first full charge and full discharge cycle yesterday evening. The load bank pulls just over three amps, which is roughly C. Limiting the charge voltage to 14.0 gives a charge current of around 2/3 C That's 14.0v at the bench power supply. At the battery it's a bit lower due to the weedy wiring and connections in my test setup. For the next run I'll take the cell voltage up to 14.0. These cells do have an amazing ability to accept charge. The charge current was very stable right 'till the end, which was kind of nerve-wracking as I had no idea what the initial state-of-charge was, and therefore when the end would be. MP.
