  2. You only need to be able to recall the word "tenure", and be able to make most basic use of the forum's search facility. That is hardly stalking. What it actually is is exposing a prize piece of hypocrisy. Sue is so keen to bash BW/CRT at every stage, she will happily ignore the advice she has repeatedly offered to others. Doesn't that advice often include something further along the lines of "don't live on a boat if you don't have somewhere else you can move off to when illness or other problems make it all too difficult"?

  3. With respect, you do not have the right to decide what a thread is "about". Neither should you go on to gratuitously insult anyone who interprets the subject of the thread in a different way from yourself.

  4. The biggest issue I see is the attempt to define. A continuing roundabout that serves no purpose whatsoever. There are 5076 registered as CC boats on the system as of yesterday, and I suspect rather conservatively, another 1000 that have not declared cc. That's 3 boats for every mile of system. That suggests there is a problem developing, which if you can't see it, you must be blind. Defining place will not solve this problem. Fiddling with Vm's will not solve this problem. Getting new legislation might solve it, but is more likely to cause a massive headache for all concerned, Council's, government and CRT. People living on boats will not be something that goes away, it's now become too established. The council's and housing associations are not equipped to deal with such an influx of homeless people. CRT needs to sit down, talk and work towards a solution with those directly concerned. The legislation they have is more than sufficient to deal with the issues of non compliance they are experiencing. They first and foremost need to bring their enforcement team into line by being consistent, as this is a major hurdle with which they are in constant denial. Start moving the people that do not move at all, they have the legislation to do this. For heavens sake, stop trying to define. Look for solutions.

  5. I don't see hypocrisy. Apart from the point that a lady is entitled to change her mind, in this thread she has taken a fairly neutral stance and is not "CRT bashing". In the past she has repeatedly warned of security of tenure issues, which is of course correct. There is no significant conflict in these two tacks. I must say I find the constant "Sue bashing" rather distasteful. She may have said things you didn't like in the past, but people and their posts should be judged on the merit of their current actions / posts, not what they may have done/said in the distant past.

  6. I am moored at Pillings (until this Sunday) and have been communicating with CRT because I don't believe anything that PLM staff tell me. Personally I hope CRT pile across the entrance and leave it in place until all the management rats have left the sinking ship.

  7. This was an agreement that Pillings agreed to .They as part of the breakdown of your mooring fee took the money from yourselves but did not pass it over to BW or as now CaRT. This NAA is one of the ways that as a charity CaRT get income to maintain and improve the Canals, Rivers and facilities that they are responsible for. If you are so happy that your money has been appropriated in this way then stay where you are .But remember if you encourage others to stay then you are responsible for the consequences .

  8. The meaning of malicious is - hateful, spiteful, malevolent, mean, nasty, cruel, wicked. Looking back I cannot see any posts where you have used any words falling into these categories. Had it been me, however, I would have said that he is an egotistical, supercilious, condescending, arrogant, rude, bad mannered, disrespectful individual, who likes nothing better than provoking and irritating people and inflaming the situation until it gets out of hand and then calling the police and making a complaint. He is a grown man in the business world for heaven’s sake, not a little boy in nursery crying “please miss, they’re being horrible to me”. All I can say is GROW UP AND MAN UP, AND STOP BEING SUCH A WIMP I sincerely hope that he is not using a serving police officer to find information. Even though Roy is embroiled in all of this his father can’t be that silly as to jeopardise his job. I know I’ll be banned and the post removed by the mods, but you know what, it’s worth it!!! So goodbye all, it’s been a blast!!!

  9. I mentioned the Ombudsman case as you were referring to it and it was the wrong one. If you start with the wrong information you will inevitably reach the wrong conclusion. I will set it out line by line as you did: Level 1 Complaint sent to BWML - Rejected Level 2 Complaint sent to BW (CRT did not exist when this started) - Offer made regarding residential licence. Remaining issues rejected Level 3 Complaint sent to Ombudsman - BWML prevented from changing contracts mid term. Ombudsman advised that widebeam issue would need to be determined by a court. Small Claims Court Case - Pre hearing judge determined that a full day was required - At the actual hearing the Judge declared that he would be unable to determine the status of the marina re: Inland or Coastal, that would require a higher court. The Judge ruled in BWML's favour and that would have been the end of it had BWML not decided to issue an eviction notice. At which point do you feel Rod was being vexatious? Andy

  10. What would you do Luctor? Give him a pat on the back say there, there and leave him be perhaps? Then move onto the next in line........ Unless CRT are seen to be taking action people are going to continue to take the piss at the expense of those who don't.

  11. Surely the point of the present regulations is that they are meant to be ambiguous. They are meant to be open to interpretation. CRT don't want to have to police the canals and rivers. They are a canal and river trust ... with lots of other and more pressing and more pertinent things to be doing to keep this marvelous inland waterways system running. Given this built-in flexibility of the CCing regulations I, too, really don't find them that difficult to understand. But I can understand how this flexibility is bothersome for those keen on moving the absolute minimum each and every 14 days. I suspect that if you have CCing regulations defined like parking regulations ... then CRT will need an army of wardens ... and they will need to pay those wardens ... and to do this, parking-type fines will need to be introduced ... and in order to encourage those wardens ... they will need to introduce bonus payment incentives ... and then the wardens really get cracking ... No thanks!

  12. Travel pack? Easy: When you go over to see the boat, the brokers hand you a bag containing a cheese sandwich, a soft drink and a Mars bar. Usually these are provided by the seller, though Whilton apparently make the sandwiches themselves.

  13. First of all, let me make clear that I'm neutral on the view - I have no strong opinions one way or another. Basically, there is a view that eg someone with a home mooring typically uses their mooring eg 48 weeks per year, for which they pay (lets say for example) £1000. And they cruise around for 4 weeks of the year, for which their licence covers that element of stuff (locks being maintained, visitor moorings, water points, rubbish disposal points etc etc) and costs eg £1000. Total cost £2000. If its a marina they're in, then CRT gets 9% of their mooring fee, so they get £1090. If its an EOG mooring, then the EOG fee is probably around £400 (varies geographically), so CRT get a net amount of £1400 A CCer, by definition, uses the canal network (and its water points, rubbish disposal, etc etc) much more because they don't have a home mooring. But still only pays the licence element £1000. So you can clearly see that the moorer is 1) paying more than the CCer and 2) paying more which ends up in CRT's income stream. So its been suggested that CCers pay a bit more than home moorers. CCers wouldn't be paying for a (non-existent) mooring, but paying for the likely extra use of CRTs facilities. The quote isn't inaccurate, I changed the person in the verb to reflect proper sentence construction. Yes.

  16. My vote would be for Nicholson every time – if only for the immense amount of detail packed into every page and the extremely comprehensive coverage. The newly released, updated guides are Books 2, 3, 6 & 7 (2 & 3 due out on 13th Mar) and there is brand new coverage of the Grantham Canal (Bk 6) and the Cotswold Canals (Bk 2). Just because they can't be boated it doesn't mean to say they are not accessible by boot or bike! For an overview of the British waterways system the Nicholson Inland Waterways Map of Great Britain is unbeatable and a great aid to planning: ISBN 978-0-00-745264-4. Books 1 & 4 are also available for Apple and Android tablets but need a colour display so not for a basic Kindle eReader.

  19. Hi, Crafts normally have got something called CIN (craft identification number). And that number gives a clue of who the builder was as it normally contains their initial. I don't know how old the use of CINs is but at least for the past 10 years is compulsory in the build of crafts. This number is normally located in two places, one of them tend to be under the engine. I hope this helps.

  20. It wasn't my intention to criticise such dialogues, merely to point out that it isn't going to fix the problem in this case, because Mr Brown and his happy band, amongst others, will not want to play ball with any such outcome on principle. I suspect that those who are members of the ACC are in general on the more compliant end of the CC spectrum, it is those that want to do their own thing in splendid isolation that are more likely to be problematic.

  22. Well possibly, but the law allows people to choose to engage in 'bona fide navigation' instead. So what more do they need to do, beyond 'shuffling up and down a 12 (or 9) mile stretch of canal' to cross the threshold into complying with the law? This is the question, an answer to which we are all entitled. The answer of course is to 'satisfy the board'. So CRT have, in my view both the authority and the obligation to define the threshold where the board will become satisfied. MtB MtB

  23. The Metering Pump In response to various questiions...this is not a thing of great mystery..it's actually pretty simple. Are you sitting comfortably...?..then I'll begin : I have attached various Ebay links to see what it looks like...to a previous thread. It has a pipe attached at one end and a pipe at the other. One end..looks longer than the other...and if you study it..the longer part looks like an 'inner' nut as it has flats. This inner nut with flats is the one I say 'Do not touch'...and I will tell you why in a minute. The pump has 2 electrical connections. When you apply 12 volts to the connections the pump 'spits' fuel..but only once. "But I hear it ticking ?"...you say.. That is because the Eber control box goes : 12 volts..then nothing..then 12 volts then nothing...then 12 volts then nothing. When you start the heater...the control box sends 12 volts..nothing very rapidly...so the pump tciks and spits at a high rate. Later on..when the heater has run for a while..the sensors on the Eber say "hey..the water coming back from the rads is really hot".... This is when the control box starts sending slower 'ticks' to the pump...so it spits small amounts of fuel. When your kettle is hot on the cooker...you turn it down....and the same with the Eber... It has a temperature sensor sitting in the chamber where the water circualtes...that tells the control box when its getting too hot. The control box then makes the metering pump spit slower...and the Eber goes into a mode that various people call various things.."Hibernate......Rest....quiescent.....slow down"...etc..all means the same.. It basically runs cooler.....and keeps checking the temperature....until the water from the rads gets too cold..then it starts spitting fuel faster again... "So what about this filter....and why is there a nut that Bob says....DO NOT TOUCH ?".. Well....think and picture the pump.. You would not put the filter at the end where the fuel comes out... That would be sillly../ You want to stop crud....dust..dead frogs etc...from getting into the pump.. "Aha...I see..."..(I hear you say...) "it MUST be on the end where the fuel goes in !" Yup..you are right... The end where the fuel goes in..is the longer end...where you have th nut that attaches the fule pipe..but there is a second nut.. "Aha......but tell me about this second nut now Bob..tell me..tell me !!" This second nut..has the filter sitting in it...and if you loosen or tighten that nut..it opens up the amount of fuel that passes through it...or shuts it down... The pump is a precision piece of equipment.. You don't want to move that nut and open it slightly...as your Eber fuel consumption could go through the roof.. You don't want t close it down...as your Eber may get unreliable... If you tinker with that nut...resetting the pump is a precision job..beyond most DIY people..and you would do better throwing it away and buying another one... Resetting involves precise voltage versus measuring of fuel over a period.....NOT FOR DIY !! (I've done it though) Hence.....you DO NOT TOUCH that inner nut..It's usually pretty tight anyway...and not easily moved.. Thus..there is nothing other than the little filter..that you could maintain... As long as you have turned off the fuel..and eventually turn it on again..you can easily remove the fuel pipes at each end. ..and remove the pump... This exposes the little filter in the inlet end as its under the nut for the inlet pipe... You can replace the electrical connections either way round..as they just give it 12 volt pulses from the control box.

  24. Yes, but you'll need to have a pump that runs all the time your stove is alight. And you'll need to install a header tank to fill the system with water after removing the Alde. Are you planning on selling the Alde?!

  28. Two cases have been mentioned on this thread although the main subject is the situation in Poplar. I'm inclined to think BML are behaving badly and I'm glad I'm not a customer of theirs. The whole situation around housing costs and availability in London is a a national disgrace, the system is broken and I'm not sure how it can be fixed but it is shockingly unfair and loaded against those on low or fixed incomes. You can rant and rave about how life has never been fair but my answer to that is should we not be making progress and trying to improve things instead of settling for same old same old.

  29. As I understand it, it is about very substantial increases in rent, over and above figures published by Cart. They have lived there for 14 years so cannot have been so bad otherwise they would have been kicked out before. I knew Rod & Annie many years ago when they sold painted ware from 'Crewe'. I find the situation they are now in very sad. Can they physically move their boat if old and ill? I don't know, but the worry of unaffordable rent increases and now eviction can't be helping. It is interesting comparing the posts on this and the posts about a woman with suspected mental problem being evicted from her boat.

  30. QMP/PLM certainly did have accountants, although they were not immune from "errors". They made a right mess of my wife's tax liability on her paye when we worked there, resulting in her having to pay over £1000 in arrears at the end of the financial year!

  32. Yes, but, (firmly playing Devil's advocate), I could say that the canal system I first signed up to 40 years ago was being progressively ruined by people like you 15 years later when a continuing large influx of boats was already changing the nature of those canals forever. Frankly such attitudes seem very NIMBYish to me. You seem to be saying - I should be allowed my place on the canals, but after that further large growth in boat numbers should be discouraged, so that what I signed up to remains the status quo, and things don't get any more crowded. When I came back to the canals after very, very many years of none boat ownership, it seemed reasonable to me to assess how things have moved on, and how they were likely to develop further, and to then make a decision on whether it was still for me. I'm not trying to be rude, but to assume that someone who has been here 25 years, (or 50, or any other number of years), has any greater right to enjoying the canals free of what they now see as overcrowding seems to me like a form of arrogance.

  33. If you are interested in old disused mines then make a stop here at 'Astley Green Colliery Museum' on the Bridgewater http://www.agcm.org.uk/history.shtml There are moorings next to the 'Miners Arms' pub owned by the Colliery and you can stay there for a few days without problems according to the volunteers working there. at the museum. There are spaces for about 3 50' boats and there are rings for tying up or, you can just use the towpath side. Every other Sunday (don't know which one), the volunteers start the two old winding engines for the public... I missed that unfortunately. Great place to spend a few hours.
