Liverpool Link Consultation

Featured Posts

NABO Facebook page says that CRT are inviting opinions about changing and/or relaxing the restrictions on the Link.

This page gives the link to the discussion paper: http://nabo.org.uk

Mostly positive but having experienced problems last year I would like to see something about opening the link outside the usual cruising season.

Shame about reducing the length of stay....we stayed 10 days and could have easily stayed for longer...indeed we were hoping to do so this year.

I will be sending my thoughts in...apart from that some of the suggestions seem ok.

Cheers

I've just responded. I thought that of, as they say, demand is exceeding supply, that limiting to a 7 day stay seems sensible. Boaters can always stay a further 14 days at Eldonian village.

Note that the email address on the consultation document is wrong - enquiries is spelt without the first i!

OK, so what is the correct e-mail address?

I've tried to respond but the e-mails keep getting bounced back?

I'm happy with most of what is being proposed apart from the reduction to 7 day thing. When we were there, Sept 2013, we were the only boat travelling both on the way in and out.

If there is a shortage of moorings why don't they just provide some more? Theres plenty of space available, especially since those yellow duck things have stopped splashing about in the dock!

I've never done the link but might I ask what the problems were?

They told us we couldn't go in late November!

I booked a 3 month winter mooring online, December 2012 to February 2013. When I tried to arrange passage with Wigan they said I couldn't go and selling me the mooring was a mistake. I asked if the Link was closed over the winter and received several different answers but not a direct yes or no. After a lot going and froing I emailed Sally Ash and she eventually said we could go. We met a boater in Manchester who moors in Liverpool Marina who was adamant CRT wouldn't let us go.

We met two boaters who said they had tried to book short winter moorings but been refused. There were 2 other boats already there, one of whom had a friend who wanted to winter in the dock and had been refused. And then, after we got there just before Christmas, another boat arrived who said he'd had no problems booking the transit.

But, the Trust still do not say that the link is not open during the winter.

NABO got an extension until 12th as the first they knew about it (as I did) was from IWA newsletter yesterday. Apparently NAG knew in December. Not sure what that means but clearly another consultation that is not widely disseminated. Nor is it on CRT website under consultations. IWA have already responded.

Wow ! what a long period to reply (NOT) responses to be in by Friday 9th January 2015 ie TOMORROW !!

Published today 8th Jan !!

they are being very clever with this consultation, wrong email address supplied, next day deadline, however, the IWA knew beforehand.........

perhaps they only want responses from the RIGHT kinds of boaters...

It was emailed out by CRT N.West on 18/12/2014. Not sure about their distribution list but possibly people who had used the Link previously and maybe other email contacts they had on file.

I agree with AndrewIC and Alf27. We have been twice in the past but because we did not go last year were not emailed by CRT. CRT have a consultation site yet don't use it. CRT have access to Orgs representing boaters but have chosen not to use all of them for consultation. IWA aware of the proposals yet I do not recall seeing anything about this proposal until it was in the newsletter this week.

This lack of consultation dismays me. It happened recently with proposal to change VMs in Oxford to residential status. That was not on CRT website either. Only because a member posted it on here was I made aware. I got the info and responded. It was clear that this proposal was only disseminated locally. I feel it is an unfair and exclusive way to go about implementing changes that affect all boaters who cruise. These are not local issues they affect all boaters.

The Liverpool link is on my "to-do" list when I have a bit more time on my hands.

I've never really understood why it is such a complicated procedure.

Perhaps someone with local knowledge or has done ti before can enlighten me why it is necessary to jump through all these hoops of pre-booked passages etc.

Hancock's Bridge is a very busy road with, I think, 3 large schools and 2 hospitals nearby. On our first visit there were 5 boats. We were told to be untied and in line, ready to go as soon as they opened the bridge. Apparently people late getting their children to school have been known to get out of their cars and threaten the staff. The actual link through the docks is quite narrow and not where you would want to meet an oncoming boat, especially if they were wide beams or it was windy, which frequently is. Finally, the entrance lock from the Mersey into Canning Dock is still used and there might be large boats manouvering in the dock.

There are two swing bridges which due to some deal with the local council or Highways Agency which can only be open twice a day for short periods because of the traffic delays they cause. Once you are through those you cruise unescorted until you reach the locks which lead down to the link.

C&RT then operate all the locks to get you into the basin and onto your mooring. Good trip worth doing, interesting city even for an ex scouser like me, it has changed out of all recognition since I left all those years ago.
